UN report: Somali guerillas helped Hizb'Allah
More than 700 paramilitary Islamists traveled to Lebanon to wage war on Israel

The New York Times reported Wednesday that more than 700 military-trained Islamic soldiers from Somalia traveled to Lebanon in July to fight alongside Hizb'Allah in its war against Israel, according to a recent United Nations report. The paramilitary Shi'ite militia in Lebanon returned the favor by providing training and - through its Iranian and Syrian backers - weapons to the Islamic alliance struggling for control of Somalia, the report added.
The disturbing document also notes that Iran sought to trade weapons for Somali uranium to fuel its controversial nuclear program, but doesn't say whether the Islamic regime in Tehran was successful. Although the panel that drafted the reports didn't say how the information was obtained, the authors had access to information from the intelligence agencies of the Security Council's 15 current members, including Britain, France, China, Russia and the United States.
According to The Times, the report states that in mid-July, Aden Hashi Farah, a leader of the Somali Islamist alliance, personally selected about 720 combat-hardened fighters to travel to Lebanon and fight alongside Hizb'Allah. At least 100 of those had returned by September, while others stayed in Lebanon for advanced military training. Apparently, the fighters were paid a minimum of $2,000 for their service and as much as $30,000 was to be given to the families of those guerillas who were killed killed, with money donated by "a number of supporting countries."
