Abdul Saleed-muslim turned christian

beautifl muslimah
My name is "Abdul Saleeb." I was born and raised in a Muslim country in the Middle East. Even though I lived in a very conservative Muslim society, I grew up in a somewhat of a liberal Muslim family. Furthermore, my Muslim upbringing was unique due to my mother's serious involvement in Islamic sufism. So I can honestly confess that I have had first-hand experience of every aspect of contemporary Islamic movements. I personally did not consider myself very religious. At one point I even turned to Marxist ideologies thinking that they could provide real solutions to my country's social ills. However, throughout all this time I never doubted the fundamentals of my religious faith. I thought of Islam as a faith with such high ideals that I did not consider myself worthy of the name Muslim but I wholeheartedly believed that Islam was God's last and most perfect religion for all mankind, based on God's final revelation, the Qur'an, and the prophet Muhammad, God's seal of prophethood. My view of other religions (especially Judaism and Christianity) was that although they were fundamentally the same since they had all been revealed by one God, they were all inferior to Islam because all of them had to various degrees corrupted the original message of their founding prophets, something that we as Muslims have not done.

My religious views were radically challenged when I left my country because of its civil turmoil and went to Europe for the continuation of my studies. By the providence of God and because of various circumstances, I ended up enrolling in an International Christian School.

A question I once asked my teacher revolutionized my worldview. I asked, "How come your word of God says one thing and our word of God says something different?" My teacher, not knowing much about Islam at all, gently asked, "How do you know the Qur'an is the word of God?" I was taken aback by that response. I had lived in a world in which everyone simply presupposed that the Qur'an was dictated word for word by God to the Prophet Muhammad and no one ever questioned that assumption. That brief encounter forced me to start on a journey, engage my Christian friends in hours of cordial discussion and debate about the truthfulness of the Christian faith.

Christianity and Islam
Like almost any other Muslim, my original reaction to the claims of Christians about Jesus Christ was that of utter shock. These claims not only seemed like plain blasphemy but also quite nonsensical. How could any rational being believe such things about an honored prophet of God? Despite my fundamental theological differences with my friends, there was something about their life and faith that impressed me a great deal. There was a sincerity in their relationship with God and with other people that I had not encountered. So I would often tell them that I did not want to deny their faith but I just wanted to find a compromise so that I could hold to the truth of Islam and they could continue to hold to their faith.

However, I was in no doubt that their belief about Jesus was based on statements that the prophet Jesus had never actually claimed for himself. My difficulty in understanding Christian belief was very much along the lines that have historically separated Islam from Christianity.

I did not grant in any way that the Bible, especially the New Testament documents, were reliable when it came to reporting the words of Christ. Anything in the Bible that disagreed with the Qur'an was automatically rejected as being a corrupt teaching in the Bible.

My spiritual journey went on for months. Oftentimes I did find comfort in the Qur'an, but I was encountering more questions in that book than answers. For example, the violent tone of many of the Qur'anic passages (especially against the unbelievers but also against the Jewish and Christian people) began to bother me, when compared with the emphasis on love in the New Testament. One particular passage that troubled me, especially in light of my good friendship with many Christians, was in Sura 5:51.

"O ye who believe! Take not Jews and Christians for your friends and protectors; they are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily God guideth not a people unjust."
However, the most troubling section of the Qur'an had to do with the character of the prophet Muhammad himself. According to Sura 33:37, God sanctions Muhammad's desire to marry the divorced wife of his own stepson, "in order that (in future) there may be no difficulty to the believers in (the matter of) marriage with the wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have dissolved with the necessary (formality) (their marriage) with them. And God's command must be fulfilled."

I vivdly remember the first time that I came across that verse in my study of the Qur'an. I began to sob with great sorrow and shame. All my life I had been told that Muhammad was the most perfect and ideal moral example for mankind and yet the Qur'an had a good number of examples of how the "revelations" could be so self-serving to the prophet himself!

Christianity or Islam
I immediately wrote a letter to my mother back home with some of these troubling questions that I was encountering. The response that I received to my letter from one of the most prominent religious leaders in my country was that I should just continue my secular studies and not focus too much on religion. On the other hand, as my understanding of the Bible was increasing many of my questions were beginning to get answered. Even as a Muslim I came to believe that the crucifixion of Christ was an undisputable historical fact that no honest person that deals with evidences of history could deny.

The character of Christ himself, as manifested for example in his beautiful Sermon on the Mount, was gradually making a great impression on me. But for me the most impressive factor about Christ was the multitude of Old Testament prophecies about the coming of the Messiah. Some of these prophecies were so specific and they were fulfilled in the life of Jesus to such a detail that it amazed me to see how God had taken hundreds of years of Jewish history to prepare the coming of the Messiah; prophecies ranging from Messiah's ancestery, his manner and place of birth, his life and ministry to the circumstances surrounding his death by crucifixion. I was very attracted to Christ and yet I could not deny my own tradition and past. Becoming Christian seemed a definite betrayal of my own family and Islamic heritage. The tension in my life was so strong that I felt torn asunder between these two faiths.

But I still could not bring myself to accept that Jesus was anything more than a human being. Since he had never explicitly said, "I am God and you must worship me," the Christian claim about Jesus was based on speculation and historically unreliable Gospels. Surely the incredible statements attributed to Jesus were invented by later Christians and put in the mouth of Jesus.

A Muslim Converts
In the midst of all this anxiety of thought, I woke up one morning and was suddenly struck by the meaning of a verse written by the prophet Isaiah in his ninth chapter. I had read this verse several weeks prior to that morning, but I had never understood its meaning. In Isaiah 7:14 we read,

"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."
Isaiah then goes on to write in chapter 9,

"[...] in the future he (God) will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan the people walking in darkness have seen a great light, on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned [...] For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne [...] from that time on and forever."
I could not believe it! The fact that the Messiah was not going to be just a prophet but Mighty God himself, was therefore a truth that had been prophesied seven hundred years before Christ in the Old Testament, and not something that had been made up by Christians many years or centuries after Christ! It was God's own promise that he will come in flesh (Immanuel = God with us) and will establish a kingdom that will last forever.

I came to trust in Christ, the next day on January 20, 1985. I cried uncontrollably as I was praying and turning to Christ in faith. I did not know why, and though I had never felt much burden of guilt, I was feeling a great sense of peace and relief from the burden of my sins. A greater satisfaction was the sense of rest in finally finding the truth about God and His revelation of love to mankind in Jesus Christ. A book that helped me (and several other Muslim friends of mine who became Christians around the same time that I did) tremendously in answering many of my questions about the deity of Christ and the reliability of the New Testament documents was Josh McDowell's "Evidence That Demands A Verdict." I highly recommend it.

Soon after my own conversion, I decided to dedicate my entire life to promoting the Good News of Christ among Muslims and especially the people of my own country. I later came to the United States and received my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Biblical and Theological Studies. I also co-authored a book called Answering Islam: The Crescent in the Light of the Cross.

Feeling sorry or that person who was so unlucky. i wonder if he has ever contemplated even a part of Quran that he read!!!!! he has discussed a lot abt bible but has not mentioned anything abt Quran......Anyways all i can say is.... this Ummah is not going to perish.....definitely it is going to flourish and will be reaching every corner of this world....only thing that we should be bothered is what is our Role in that. if an individual is not a part of it he is unfortunate thats it. this deen is not waiting for you to be a part of it, its not something like this deen cannot survive without you. instead if you are a part of it and you are under its umbrella of faith then you are saved from eternal hell-fire thats it.

How ignorant of Islam must have he been to follow Karl Marx...

You mean praying to statues? Or to Jesus (pbuh)

What about the Old Testament???
One particular passage that troubled me, especially in light of my good friendship with many Christians, was in Sura 5:51.

"O ye who believe! Take not Jews and Christians for your friends and protectors; they are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily God guideth not a people unjust."
Whenever Christians and Jews have military superiority it is always a bad time for Muslims (The crusades, Spanish Crusade, colonisation, Iraq...)
Let's not forget that in Islam you have to show respect and kindness to your neighbour, even christian or jewish

However, the most troubling section of the Qur'an had to do with the character of the prophet Muhammad himself. Lol, the prophet was only married at age 25 to a lady 15 years his senior and this for most of his adult life! He could have had as many women as he wanted...

I really doubt that this is true

These are just wishful assumptions, the contrary has been proven too!

Dear sister, if you have specific questions we'd be happy to answer them.
Posting entire article is not very practical, do not be shy in directly asking questions.

Muslim Guy
Many of these people are fakes; for all we know, this guy could have been born a Christian in the first place (perhaps his father was a Christian and he only mentioned his mother - a half truth).

Much like the Walid Shoebat guy who became a hard-out PRO-israeli-zionist and anti-palestinian/muslim. He speaks very good english and frequently comes on Fox and CNN where he is interviewed about the basic ideas of terrorism all children are brought up with in Muslim homes - can anyone else smell a rat? There are plenty of non-muslim arabs who will do anything for money.

There ARE probably some people that aren't fakes - and we have the example's of Noah's (as) son, Lut's (as) wife, and Abraham's (as) father - some people who are that close can go far, far astray. Still, I honestly think that the rate at which more people are becoming Muslim is much greater than the number of born Muslims who turn to other religions. Salam alaikum.

Asalaamalikum,

I honestly believe this story is made up and fabricated, just like those recently found on Youtube and the many bias/hatred people have towards Islam today. I just get that gut feeling that someone "pretended" to be knowledgeable by quoting the Quran, because I can utterly see alot of quick jumps this person is making. I don't think this person EVER read the Quran.

For the sake of this letter, let's consider it true. Just like how the teacher asked him "how do you know the Quran is the word of God," he should said to the teacher "how do you know the Bible is the word of God?" written by so many "inspired" men. That way we could of seen the teachers view.

I have something similar to ask this person......how do you know that George Washington was the president of the U.S.? you never met him, he never met you, you never talked to him, nor he talked with you............It's called faith...this person either never had any faith or was lacking faith.

In my heart I feel this is propoganda, just the way he makes big jumps from his questions to joining International Christian school LOL. Sure, there are a very very small portion that convert from Islam to another religion, but that is because of lack of understanding, reading, knowledge, and ignorance.

Thousands upon thousands turn to Islam each year just in America than ANY other religion.

we have read many of fake stories like this in the internet & its only to prevent Christians who still don’t understand Islam from reverting because they already know Muslims never convert to Christianity for the same reasons that make thousands of Christians convert to Islam & such stories/videos full of stupid mistakes that expose it & prove its by Christian not Muslim & mostly Arabic Christian , we read many of those funny stories in Arabic Christian sites & only they believe it & cheer for it because they don’t know the quran or the Islam & they can believe all what they hear about it & the WANT to believe it any way lets see few comments that supports what I said ...for example here he claimed to be born as Muslim in Islamic country so he should understand the quran by its original language not by translations but he used that verse... "O ye who believe! Take not Jews and Christians for your friends and protectors ..." to prove his false claim that we should hate Christians & Jews & as usual he twist the meanings of the words to reach his goal but in the original Arabic text of the quran the verse used the word " awlea'a" & it mean protectors . & I don’t know where is the word "friends" he used came from?! the translation is protectors or allies & that’s forbid us to ask protection from nonmuslim army against other Muslim country like what happen in Spain & we saw how the Christians did there when the Muslims took them as protectors against other Muslims ( see the movie " when the moors ruled in euro" in this site ) & AS USUAL he claimed those "harsh verses" make him feel uncomfortable but he didn’t show us any !! only one verse with wrong translation !! & talking about the love in the new testament!!,,,
Read what Jesus said (as they claim) in Matthew 10: 34-36
"Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword.

For I have come to set a man 'against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;

And one's enemies will be those of his household."

If as you say that Jesus can only be compared with God then which God do you mean? Is this the same God that was written about in the Old Testament, a.k.a Yahweh, that asks his Chosen People to murder innocent civilians?

For example, "Deuteronomy 20 contains Yahweh's instructions about war. If a city does not accept Israel's offer of peace and open its gates, then 'when the Lord your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it"(verse13). With regard to other cities, the command is (verse 16), "Do not leave anything that breathes.' "
And
"Joshua 11:20, 'For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.' "

Or is it the God whose Chosen people the Israelites "destroyed with the sword every living thing in it [Jerico] - men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep, and donkeys"(Joshua 6:21)?

the examples about that can take pages ! anyway he also said about his impression when he go to live in western country & the Christians life style there .." there was something about their life and faith that impressed me a great deal. There was a sincerity in their relationship with God and with other people " hmm no comment !

& again he start to attack the quran & talking about verse 33:37
"AND LO, [42] [O Muhammad,] thou didst say unto the one to whom God had shown favour and to whom thou hadst shown favour, [43] “Hold on to thy wife, and remain conscious of God!” And [thus] wouldst thou hide within thyself something that God was about to bring to light [44] for thou didst stand in awe of [what] people [might think], whereas it was God alone of whom thou shouldst have stood in awe! [45] [But] then, when Zayd had come to the end of his union with her, [46] We gave her to thee in marriage, so that [in future] no blame should attach to the be*!lievers for [marrying] the spouses of their adopted children when the latter have come to the end of their union with them. [47] And [thus] God’s will was done."
before the Islam when someone adopt a kid they consider him as his real son & it was part of the Arabic culture that its forbidden to marry the ex-wife of your adopted son even he is in fact stranger to you & not your real son but they just make it forbidden so if the prophet just told them its not shame & not forbidden they will accept that but in heart they will not do it because they used to feel shame about it for generations before Islam & will say we better not marry her.. so the God ordered the prophet peace be upon him to marry his adopted son ex-wife to finish this feeling of shame amongst the believers & no one can say its better not to do it because the prophet peace be upon him did it & no one can be better or more piety than the prophet peace be upon him & I really really don’t know what is in this verse that make you say "...I began to sob with great sorrow and shame .." are you talking about the quran or the bible? plz go read the bible first.. he claimed the quran in this verse was "self-serving" to the prophet peace be upon him!!!! so if this was true why the verse blaming the prophet peace be upon him because he was worry to do what God wanted him to do & asked his adopted son to keep his wife to save him self from what people (like you) will think about him but the God told him he should only worry about what God say not people say. I don’t see all that self-serving in anyway!
& in another part he claimed ...” the most prominent religious leaders in my country was that I should just continue my secular studies and not focus too much on religion." Who can believe that lie?! ANY Muslim with little knowledge of Islam can answer those thoughts u has about faith apart of the most prominent religious leaders!!
& then he continue ,,,, "Even as a Muslim I came to believe that the crucifixion of Christ was an undisputable historical fact that no honest person that deals with evidences of history could deny.".. actually no one can proof !! can you?
wellll if he just found the proof that Jesus was God from the bible then he should be better from all those Christians scholars who was debating ahmad dedat & other Muslims & failed to proof it ... congratulation son !
& no comment on the crying to his dead lord Jesus !
finally the most funny part .."and several other Muslim friends of mine who became Christians around the same time that I did" oh that was cuteeeeeeee :D because your western media hide that & say the opposite .

finally !! I don’t see what is the point of posting such story from start to end without any comments from the one who posted? we don’t mind to discuss such stories & hear from the other side but with our explanations & comments not just advertise it because not all the visitors are Muslims & they believe those fake stories ..

wa al salam alykom wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh..

let you know ! that the fastest relgion of delivering and spreading in the world is the great ISLAM ( this is not my statistics ) , that is acorrding to the international center of the middle east research- every day in U.S.A , IN u.k , in germany , canada , australia , denmark , south amercia , africa and in all over the world , the people convert to islam with love ,satisfaction , senerty , tranquility based on OPEN MINDED and on decisive prooves !
i can advice you firstly , to open your mind not your weak sensations , to read about islam , about the prophet Muhammed ( god bless and peace be upon him ), and to return back to the islam before the day of judgment , and do not delay do not delay do not delay and say : i bear witness that there is no god is worthy of worship except Allah , and i bear witness that the prophet Muhamed is Allah's messenger !
let you know lastly ! - that just before tow weeks , there is a very big catholic priest has converted to islam after he had been a christ 62 years ! and he declared about the weakness of the christianity and the logic as well as the mercy of ISLAM!

Salaam,

If that is the path this man chose...let him be. I thank Allah I am surronded by those who live to believe. Dear Brothers you raise our ummah.
It is so strange that so many of the dis-believers attack the manhood of our Prophet (swas). Little do they realize all he did was serve Allah.
We need not pay attention..this man will have to face the consequences of his greed. Forgive me...but he was a wannabe..and he will always be a tool...he will never earn respect amongst those he selected to please...
When we pray let us remember how blessed we are that Allah keeps us on His path as a mercy to us.

It's not the story that shocks me, it's the person that actually puts the effort and time in making false stories. Must be really bored? Could of used the time more wisely and actually studied the Quran

I also co-authored a book called Answering Islam: The Crescent in the Light of the Cross.

if i dont know i will say no comment and i will ask teachers who has knowledge about that.

if as a student i try to understand with my logic can happen that i am wrong or making mistakes.

this kind of muslims are also using this kind of logic.

if his teacher who doesn´t has any knowledge about islam and also ask a man who also doesn´t have any knowledge who will guide them?

My spiritual journey went on for months. Oftentimes I did find comfort in the Qur'an, but I was encountering more questions in that book than answers. For example, the violent tone of many of the Qur'anic passages (especially against the unbelievers but also against the Jewish and Christian people) began to bother me, when compared with the emphasis on love in the New Testament.

Well, are these verses from New Testament not violent in tone?

New Testament, Mattew 10, 34-36;
"Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. For I have come to set a man 'against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one's enemies will be those of his household.'

or even these verses from Old Testament;

Deuterenomy 20
10 'When you march up to attack a city, first offer it terms of peace.
11 If it agrees to your terms of peace and opens its gates to you, all the people to be found in it shall serve you in forced labor.
12 But if it refuses to make peace with you and instead offers you battle, lay siege to it,
13 and when the LORD, your God, delivers it into your hand, put every male in it to the sword;
14 but the women and children and livestock and all else in it that is worth plundering you may take as your booty, and you may use this plunder of your enemies which the LORD, your God, has given you.
15 "That is how you shall deal with any city at a considerable distance from you, which does not belong to the peoples of this land.
16 But in the cities of those nations which the LORD, your God, is giving you as your heritage, you shall not leave a single soul alive

Or did you find "song of songs" ,somewhat, inspiring and comforting, it makes you feel like to join christianity?

Song of Songs 7;
8 Your very figure is like a palm tree,
your breasts are like clusters.
9 I said: I will climb the palm tree,
I will take hold of its branches.
Now let your breasts be like clusters of the vine
and the fragrance of your breath like apples,

Is it holy book or similar to magazines you can find at top of the rack?

Well, doesnt mean to be harsh or anything or mock other's belief, but i know that article is a solid hoax, like brother Cairo_81 said that "Muslims never convert to Christianity for the same reasons that make thousands of Christians convert to Islam".

Truth or false!!!

:muslim_child: Salam to all !!! I dont know how much truth and how much false is involved in the article. One cannot say that the thread posted on Muslim getting converted to Christian can be a fake story nor can one say that non beleivers converting to Islam is true in the forum.

Accepting or reverting into different religion is on the basis of ones understanding, belief and environment. Humanity is more important than anything. Looking down upon non beleivers creating so much discrimination on basis of race and religion has raised an never ending problems. And we all are vicitmised by such things. All are suffering the consequences.

Good and bad are everywhere. Generalization is not correct. If we are in christian blog maximum people there would appreciate their religion. I would say among muslims there must be number of people who must be thinking of changing the religion into something else.

Neways, ultimately what matters is the peace that the person breathes. But again if somebody is writing flase and spreading lies or playing with any religion is a very shameful act on human grounds. Playing political games in name of different religion is very shameful.....

I think the only true reason that you convert to Christianity is because you think Islam is full of hatred. Maybe you got this idea from the muslim around you but this is not what Islam teach. I hope you can study prophet Mohamed life and realize how peaceful and loving he is.

I recommend you to ask a knowledgable muslim about all the verse that you stated before jumping into conclution. I hope Allah will give guidence to you.
