My Story to islam.

Islam has been a passion of mine ever since I stumbled upon a book entitled “Basics of Islam” whilst casually browsing ‘Waterstones’ bookstore in Newcastle upon Tyne. After reading its contents from cover to cover, it seemed that everything I believed in was illustrated in this little handbook. From reading the Basics of Islam, I began searching through the Internet for additional information on Islam; as a result, my interest in this fascinating religion became more apparent.

With residing in Newcastle, a small Muslim community, I had no knowledge of the location of the nearest Mosque and many questions I had regarding Islam were left unanswered, until I decided to contact the ‘Muslim Foundation’. I was put in touch with a local revert who accompanied me on a visit to the local Mosque. From the beginning of June 2005, I converted.

From my personal experience of living in Newcastle, I feel it is very difficult to be Muslim. Opposition from members of the public and Muslims alike have prevented me from fully embracing Islam.

Not only am I fearful of the reactions from the public but also from my own family, because of this, I have been unable to tell them of my conversion to Islam and without essential guidance from my mother and father, everyday has been an upward struggle.

It has been a long and lonely journey into Islam but I would not change it for anything, Islam has given me a great inner strength and peace of mind that I never found in Christianity.

Assalamu Alaikum sister caz26,

I'd like to welcome you to this forum.

I'm very glad to hear of your conversion to Islam. May Allah strengthen your faith, increase your knowledge of Islam, forgive your sins, admit you to Paradise and guide your family to Islam.

Aameen.

I have a few points I'd like to make:

1- Please check out some books and videos that are found in the two links below. They are really worth reading and watching:

http://www.turntoislam.com/forum/showpost.php?p=88428&postcount=5

By reading the books and watching the videos found in the above two links, you will -God willing- increase your knowledge of Islam and so will be -God willing- more able to be a better Muslim and respond to any challenges that face you as a result of being a Muslim.

2- I begin this point 2 by saying that we Muslims do not need the recognition of any other religion or country to justify our faith or to make us feel good about ourselves. We have the book of Allah, the authentic sayings of His Messenger [peace be upon him] and the example of the Companions in how they applied and understood these two sources, and this is perfectly adequate to us.

Having said that, that does not mean we cannot use positive statements about Islam coming from non Muslims when there's a necessity and with certain caution [such as stating that our belief is not based on these positive statements].

In light of what I have said above, please check out the following links, which I hope you'll find helpful when the time comes to tell your family about Islam:
