I as well don't smoke Alhumdulillah

We as human beings should be careful in what we label haram or halal as the Quran never says that smoking is Haram. We can only come to the term that maybe its makrooh but the best thing we should say is Allahu Alam as only Allah(swt) knows.

Now what we do know is that anything that harms our bodies is not good for us to do so we should keep away from them.

May Allah(swt) forgive me if I have said anything wrong Ameen

i was always under the impression that smoking was bad all around because it is a gross habit (no offense to smokers) that is literally killing you and annoying the non-smokers around you. i got into a discussion with a muslim brother about whether hookah was permissable, since it too is just as damaging (despite popular belief...) as cigarettes. while i'm not sure whether or not it's haram or halal, one thing is for sure, is that neither do anything positive for your body, so why would you want to do it? its like committing a slow suicide.

so in my opinion, it would be best judgement just to stay away from things like that. but thats just my two cents.

** oh and i dont smoke, by the way. :)

Asalaamu'Alykum,

I have not read all the posts, but it reminds of Brother Ayman's post, we need to stop saying what we think. (not exactly like this). "Oh i think is good for you, it relieves stress" i have no right whatsoever to this.

Question:
Is smoking cigarettes Haraam?

Answer:

Praise be to Allah and peace and blessings be on His Prophet SAWS.

Smoking is one of the things which has caused a lot of problems and harm these days and it has spread like wild fire. Before we discuss this topic in detail, we should know that Allaah the Almighty has divided things in the world into two types, good or permissible (al-tayyibaat, al-halaal) and evil or prohibited (al-khabaa'ith, al-haraam), and there is no third type. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning) in surat al-A'raaf (7:157):

"And He makes good things halaal for them and bad things haraam."

Considering this fact, smoking can either be permissible and good or prohibited and evil.

Thus, we present some of its characteristics and let the person asking the question see himself in which type lies smoking.

1. There is no disagreement among the physicians and sane people that smoking is harmful for health. It is one of the major causes of lung cancer and other diseases. It is also one of the major causes of death. Since, it is known that the Islamic law prohibits everything that is harmful for a human being. Allah said (interpretation of meaning):

"Do not kill yourself. Allah is Merciful unto you." (Surat al-Nisaa' 4:29)

In addition, His Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) said:

"There is no harm or causing of harm (in Islaam)." (Arabic "laa darar wa laa diraar")

He SAWS (peace be upon him) also said:

"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ... his body as to what he engaged it in."

Smoking also goes against the saying of the Prophet SAWS:

"Your body has a right on you."

2. There is no disagreement among the physicians and sane people that smoking is harmful for the health of others who inhale the polluted breath of the smoker. Medical research has proven the harmful effects of smoking mothers on their children.

3. The offensive smell caused by smoking is a source of pain to the worshippers of Allah among humans and angels. The angels are offended and suffer from the same things that the human beings suffer from. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):

"Those who cause harm to believing men and women without any reason do a great sin." (Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:58)

4. The money that is spent on cigarettes is used on buying a harmful thing and is therefore an extravagance. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):

"… and do not be extravagant wasters. Those who are extravagant are kinsmen of Satan." (Surat al-Israa' 17:26-27)

Extravagance (in Islam) means spending on something haraam.

Spending money on cigarettes is a waste of resources as well. The Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) said:

"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ..... what he owned as to how he spent it."

Considering all that has been presented, it can be clearly seen that smoking is an evil among many others. It is not permissible to indulge in it, or buy and sell it, or even to offer it to others. It is incumbent on a person who is addicted to it that he must make all efforts and get whatever necessary treatment to stop it. If the unbelievers have understood the harm caused by smoking and made laws regarding it, the Muslims should be even more eager to stop it and treat those who are addicted to it.

We ask Allah the Almighty to cure everyone indulging in this evil and help him in giving it up. Allah is the Best Guide to the Right Path.

As the scholars of the salaf and present have mentioned, smoking is haraam because of the general evidence that indicates that it is haraam. There is no specific text from the Messenger SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), because smoking only emerged recently, but the principles of sharee’ah are general in application, and some indications in some reports indicate that it is haraam. If a smoker sits next to you and wants to smoke, then advise him gently and kindly. Tell him, “My brother, this is haraam, and it is not permissible for you.”

I think that if you advise him kindly and gently, he will refrain from smoking, as we and others have found out by experience. If he does not refrain from smoking, then you have to leave him, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Qur’aan) that when you hear the Verses of Allaah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them…” [al-Nisa’ 4:140]

But this is when it is in a public place. If it is in the workplace and you advise him but he does not refrain, then there is no sin on you, because this is the matter of necessity and you could not get away from him.

did it jz once to try wat it felt like...it felt....useless

Same here. I used to smoke for a little while just to see how it would taste and would feel. Like podolski said, it really is useless. There is no taste and it burns and screws up your lungs.

Asalaamu'Alykum,

^ Insh'Allah try and leave a gathering that makes you fall into evil, it is difficult but showing some strength will help you to achieve this. Plus increasing your knowledge will help you, it will reinforce your faith.

May Allah (S.W.T) make it easier for you.

I have never smoked before, do not like it at all, yuck i hate it when someone maybe walking in front me and smoking. Smoke is coming from all directions, so i am like trying to dodge it all. Ughhhh!
