Cigarette Smoking - Is it Haraam (unlawful) in Islaam ?

Many Muslims regard smoking as disliked by the Sharee’ah but not forbidden. And whenever advice is given in this regard they choose to ignore it. Though people know the evil effects of smoking, it seems that Satan wants them to keep on wasting their money and burning their chests.

Certainly, Cigarettes were not present during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammed (Sallaallahu alaihe wa-Sallam), however rulings with regards to similar substances are present in the two Revelations: the Qur'aan and the authentic Sunnah. As a rule, the Qur'aan forbids every thing that is evil. As Allah says: “He (the Prophet Muhammed) allows them all that is good and lawful, and prohibits them as unlawful all that is evil.” {Soorah al-Ar’af (7): 157}

Evil manifests itself in things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, drinks, etc. So, If it is proved that smoking is among the evil, this is in itself enough for the Believers to realize that smoking is forbidden, in the light of the above stated verse of Soorah al-Ar’af.

1. Smoking is a Killer: It causes diseases like lung cancer, tuberculosis and heart diseases (just to mention a few). And we know that Allah forbids us from killing ourselves. As He says: “And do not kill yourselves. Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you. And whoever commits that through aggression and injustice, We shall cast him into the Fire and that is easy for Allah” {Soorah an-Nisaa’ (4): 29} Allah also says: “And do not throw yourselves into destruction.” {Soorah al-Baqarah (2):195

2. Smoking burns wealth: And Allah says: “But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift. Verily spendthrifts are brothers of the devils.” {Soorah al-Israa’ (17) 26-27}

Do we not see the Muslims who smoke? Those who hold on to every penny, only to burn all of it in cigarettes! …. Subhaan Allah, along with their chests, waste on top of waste.

3. Smoking inflicts harm on non-smokers: The Messenger of Allah said: “There should be neither harming, nor reciprocating harm.” [An Authentic Hadeeth reported by Sheykh al-Albani in Saheeh al-Jaami # 7517]

Many people encounter breathing problems when they accidentally inhale smoke from someone’s pipe or cigarette, especially people suffering from bronchial asthma. It is also proved medically that non-smokers are harmed when in the company of smokers (i.e. passive smoking). The smoking of parents has been linked to respiratory problems in children and crib death. It is also the cause of many devastating fires.

4. Smoking causes the spread of evil: Since smoking in evil, Muslims who smoke should remember that they set a bad example on others and invite to sin and disobedience to Allah, when they smoke openly and therefore encourage others.

5. Smoking effects worship: Many smokers dislike fasting and sitting in Islaamic study circles, because they constantly crave cigarettes. The smoker is an addict, both physically and psychologically.

6. Smoking makes the smoker smell bad: Everything that a smoker comes in contact with smell of cigarettes; His car, clothes, home, etc. Therefore, when a smoker prays in congregation he hurts his fellow humans with his smell as well as the angels, as the Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever has eaten from such greens as garlic, onions or leek should keep away from our mosque. Truly, the angels are harmed by what harms the offspring of Aadam.”Saheeh al-Bukhari

The above points constitute clear evidence that smoking is evil, and is therefore Haraam (unlawful). If a Muslim is under any kind of stress, then he must turn to Allah for help. Even medical science has rejected outright, the myth that smoking calms the nerves. What we know for sure, is that the rememberence of Allah is healing, as Allah says: “Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find tranquility.” {Soorah ar-Raad (13):28}

So when the urge for smoking arises, resort to the Qur'aan and strive to comply with Allah’s commandments. “Those who strive hard in Our Cause, We will surely guide them to Our Paths.” {Soorah al-Ankabut (29):69}

To Quit Smoking:

One may want to take some of the following measures while depending upon Allah, seeking His help and guidance:

1. Minimize contact with smokers (this being the most important step)
2. Try to minimize drinking the drinks that become mentally related to smoking like coffee, tea, etc.
3. Whenever there is a urge to smoke, try to make yourself busy with something else, especially activities that keep your hands busy.
4. Try not to accept a cigarette from anyone.
5. Try not to finish smoking, the whole cigarette.
6. Drink a lot of water when you quit smoking. Dehydration is the main cause of the symptoms of withdrawal.
7. Try to remember that you want to gain the pleasure of Allah. Throw away all leftover cigarettes.

Salam.

Its true indeed that smoking is a no no.
Its like alchohol. The prophet pbuh said, "ma yuskir kathiran fa qaliluh haram", so its like, what makes you drunk when drank alot, is haram even if you drink alittle of it. This and smoking has alot of similarities in my opinion :)

:jazaak: sister for putting this topic forward .
I too agree, and think it should even be banned of all public and nonpublic areas, wherever it possible.
Just taking one example: the masjid at my place, there's no special area for smokers, so they (the smokers) are killing us really. I strongly protest against.

Asalaam Alaykum

Ok jus to cut a long story short......my daddy had 6 brothers including him. My dad is third eldest, two of his younger brothers and and two of his eldest brothers have passed away :( .....The two youngest passed away due to heavy smoking and eating wrong kind of food....take away food, oily stuff...etc...

I knew my dad was getting to this stage cos i take him to doctors so the nurse explains to me how bad he getting. I knew i had to help him cos he wouldnt do it himself. He had been smoking since his teens so it was hard for him to give up. I used to always bring it up, ''quit smoking quit smoking,'' but i needed him to agree, he had to be willing to give up himself. After the death of his younger brother he did want to quit. So then i had to find ways how he could thats when i went to a few campaigns and they were handing out leaflets, gums and patches. I took what i could.

At first he tried the nicotinell chewing gum. He dint like this cos he wasnt getting the nicotine he craved....then he tried the patches....that was working....alhamdulillah.....and slowly slowly he just got out of the habit...he changed his diet which has helped him too..

You have to be patient with them during this time because they mood change and they get angry quite easily.

Alhamdulillah all is well now and he back to his normal self :) ....and he saves a few bob...hehe

Ok i have to go pray namaz now im very late....:girl3:

:ma: i agree smoking should be banned :SMILY138: like some states in US they banned smoking in public which is not that bad when you have everyone around you smoking.

muslima80 either you are lucky or you are genius. I don't know how you did it, but it is not easy telling someone to stop their habit unless they decide otherwise themselves. I have been telling my brother to stop smoking for a long time and it is not working. He keeps on giving me the usual stories, he will stop one day.. it is just hard for him to stop now blah blah blah....
Alhamdulilah though it doesn't affect his ibadah like fasting although he has this urge that he needs to smoke before he even eats!

Masha'Allah sister, may Allah reward him and you for helping him.
I myself used to smoke but alhamdulilaah i quit, as did my younger brother who used to smoke for even a longer time, since primary school even. But if you try to improve yourself you have to start I think step, by step by thinking on the reward from Allah (swt) for purifying youself, and always put your trust in Allah, and insha'Allah you'll make it.
That's my advise to the brothers and sisters who try to quit, and even those who haven't tried it yet:).

I know countless muslims who smoke, and they all know that it's haram!

I know countless Muslims who smoke, who think it is permissible to smoke!

But this is just due to their ignorance and lack of knowledge. They know alcohol is haram because it is an intoxicant which have been been ruled as haram in the Qur'an. But what they don't know is that Allah forbids everything that is harmful to us:

And do not kill yourselves. Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you. And whoever commits that through aggression and injustice, We shall cast him into the Fire and that is easy for Allah. (Qur'an, 4:29)

Only recently have we come to know the devastating effects smoking has on our health (something we didn't know when they were first sold), so only recently has smoking become haram for us.

The problem in the UK is that the government make so much money on taxes that they wont ban smoking totally.

The country would lose millions each year.

Salaams to all!

I would just like to make clear that i am not a smoker and do not like to be in the company of smokers!

However, reading all the posts i think some clarity is needed.

It is intoxication that is haram therefore anything that invokes intoxication is considered to be haram ie alcohol (only ethanol as all others are poisonous!), drugs and hallucinogenic plants like magic mushrooms).

Cigarettes although addictive do not cause intoxication and therefore are not considered haram!! I think it is wrong to try and bend the rules!

Although i agree with the money wasting and harmful to health bits ...........but then so is chocolate!! As a consequence one has an obligation to look after the miraculous body that Allah has blessed one with!!

Stabbing yourself in the eye doesn't intoxicate either, but its Haraam as it harms you, just like tobacco does!

Many of the `Ulamaa' actually have stated that smoking is worse than alcohol in that there are more sins involved in it. Alcohol for example doesn't harm others like smoking does. Second hand smoke actually kills people.. SubhaanAllaah.

I no longer smoke...

But the non-smoker must realize that addiction makes quitting so very difficult. Smoking as a habit is easily associated with various other activities and action, not all of which are harmful... if we begin to then count the chemical addiction of the cigarettes and the ease with which they are consumed - then we can begin to identify with the smokers' plight.

Allah knows the difficulty, here... and He rewards those who overcome... but I have seen that He is Most Patient...

Thus, I have quit.

I know countless muslims who smoke, and they all know that it's haram!

I suppose you can't count me as one of those.
I also know other Muslims who smoke.

It's really hard to quit, but I'm making an effort to quit after talking it over with the Imam.

But, yeh it's definitely a disgusting habit :(
