what do you guys think of the case of these brothers?

CAMDEN, N.J. — Five Muslim immigrants were convicted Monday of plotting to massacre U.S. soldiers at a New Jersey military base in a case the government said demonstrated its post-Sept. 11, 2001, determination to stop terrorist attacks in the planning stages.

The defendants were acquitted of attempted murder charges but face life in prison for conspiring to kill military personnel. The federal jury spent about 38 hours deliberating over the past six days.

The men lived in and around Philadelphia for years. The government said after their 2007 arrest that an attack had been imminent and that the case underscored the dangers of terrorist plots hatched on U.S. soil.
Although investigators said the men were inspired by Usama bin Laden, they were not accused of any ties to foreign terror groups.

Defense lawyers argued that the alleged plot was all talk — that the men weren't seriously planning anything and that they were goaded by two paid FBI informants.

During the eight-week trial, the government relied heavily on information gathered by the informants, who infiltrated the group and secretly recorded hundreds of conversations.

Prosecutors said the men bought several assault rifles supplied by the FBI and that they trekked to Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains to practice their shooting. The government also presented dozens of jihadist speeches and videos that the men supposedly used as inspiration.

Convicted were: Jordanian-born cab driver Mohamad Shnewer; Turkish-born convenience store clerk Serdar Tatar; and brothers Dritan, Eljvir and Shain Duka, ethnic Albanians from the former Yugoslavia, who had a roofing business.

A sixth man arrested and charged only with gun offenses pleaded guilty earlier.

The government has had a mixed record on terrorism prosecutions since Sept. 11. It won guilty pleas from Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, Richard Reid, who tried to blow up a trans-Atlantic jetliner with a shoe bomb, and the Lackawanna Six, a terrorist cell outside Buffalo, N.Y. And it convicted U.S. citizen Jose Padilla of plotting terrorist attacks.

But a case against four men in Michigan fell apart after a federal prosecutor was accused of withholding evidence. And a case in Miami against seven men accused of plotting to blow up Chicago's Sears Tower has produced one acquittal and two mistrials.

Prosecutors in the case at Fort Dix said the group chose the Army post because one of the defendants was familiar with it. His father's pizza shop delivered to the New Jersey base, which is 25 miles from Philadelphia and is used primarily to train reservists for duty in Iraq.

The group's objective was to kill "as many American soldiers as possible," according to prosecutors.

"I think they were in the last stage of planning," then-U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie said at the time of their arrest. "They had training, they had maps, and I think they were very close to moving on this."

He added: "This is what law enforcement is supposed to do in the post-9/11 era — stay one step ahead of those who are attempting to cause harm to innocent American citizens."

But during the trial, prosecutors said the men were probably months away from an attack and did not necessarily have a specific plan.

The investigation began after a store clerk store told the FBI that some customers had asked him to transfer onto DVD some video footage of them firing assault weapons and screaming about jihad.

The FBI asked two informants — both foreign-born men who entered the U.S. illegally and had criminal records — to befriend the suspects. Both informants were paid and were offered help obtaining legal resident status.

During the trial, federal prosecutor William Fitzpatrick defended the government's handling of the case. "The FBI investigates crime on the front end. They don't want to have to do it on the back end," he told the jury.

None of the five defendants testified.

i think these guys were seen as guilty before the trial even started.

:salam2: I agree with you, brother, they are guilty until proven innocent. It reminds me of one of the cases in England with the Guilford 4 (they made a film, Not without my father) and there was a father and son and two other guys imprisoned as the police were under pressure to convict somebody (Irish) for the pub bombings. The old man (the father) died in prison and the other three were eventually set free after years behind bars. I also remember watching a documentary on Channel 4 (UK channel) while I still lived in Ireland. They were following the case of a black man in Texas accused of murder and sentenced to death. Meanwhile the real culprit had confessed but they still went ahead and executed the innocent man anyway. I watched horrified as his family came to say goodbye... where is the justice in this world...? It's little to none, my friend. ALLAH is the only Judge.

This is the key. U know must muslim parents kinda are too busy with dunya. Then you get these people that talk in such smooth and knowledgeable way with betraying their religion by Quoting that the Quran says this and taking it out of context. The informants goal is to sacrifice their religion to obtain US citizenship.

Having said that, parents need to teach their children the right information of Islam and to refer their children to learn from the right people and sources. Young not fearing these kids may have fell for a cheap and stupid trick. Starting from a simple act leading to what they ended up with. Parents please be wise practice your religion the dunya is just what it is, your children are whats left behind. If you don't educate them then there so many possibility that will deviate them or mislead them.

The "Freedom of Speech" in the USA is not really true. The federal government has what is called Conspiracy. This method of taking a person to court with this charge really is way to make sure the government will win. Over 97% of the cases of conspiracy are in the favor of the government/prosecutor. So what you say can end up as evidence in a court of law.

This really comes at a time where muslims have finally started making serious dawaa. Some methods included mailing the english t Quran and making subway ads to inform the people in the USA. These kind of incidents take place with a lot of youth in the USA, that are not muslims. because these kids were muslim, well media like to sensationalize these events. Not to forget to mention that they supposedly wanted to attack the countries military base. It may be that even the government broadcasting this information for justification of the countries they have invaded. It is a pretty stupid event or case.

May Allah have mercy on them.
If it it's what they did, then I think they were foolish to do such thing. Their action will put other Muslims at danger. Since their intention was Jihad they could have done that in other ways such financial help
[money is a much needed resource] in places like Palestine, Somalia, Afghanistan, etc....

They don't seem to be clever at all, why make video tapes and ask a clerk to produce video who is not Muslim? Their whole plan was silly.

Like picozzy mentioned, often times the informants 'instigate' particular types of dialogues and sort of lead them on to convict them. Not to mention they are paid large amount of money $100-$300 thousands plus.

May Allah have mercy on them, and Allah knows best whether they are guilty or not
