Does Islam claim that Eve was created from Adam's rib? ....If so, please back up with references from Quran or Sunnah.

273. Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Treat women well. The woman was created from a rib. The most bent part of the rib is the top part. If you try to straighten it, you will break it. If you leave it, it remains bent. So treat women well." [Agreed upon]

It is a rigorously authenticated hadith--related by both Bukhari and Muslim

Salaam,

I've always liked this hadith because it shows the importance of allowing women to be women. If a man tries to force a woman to conform to the man's ideal then it will destroy what she is, it will break her in a fundamental way. It also speaks eloquently of treateing women gently and not physically forcing anything on her. :)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Treat women kindly. Woman has been created from a rib and the most bent part of the rib is the uppermost. If you try to turn it straight, you will break it. And if you leave it alone, it will remain bent as it is. So treat women kindly.”

Another version adds”..if you wish to draw benefit from it, you can do so despite its shape.”

Some scholars perceived the Hadiths in their literal meaning and accepted the idea that Eve was created from Adam’s rib. Yet many scholars, on the other hand, totally rejected this interpretation. They based their argument on the fact that in Arabic, the words “created from” do not necessarily refer to the substance of creation; they can also refer to the nature of something. These scholars sustain their argument with an example from the Qur’an in which Allah says “That man has been created from hastiness”. Of course, this does not mean that man’s substance is hastiness; it only refers to man’s nature and behavior.

Coming to Quran;

O mankind! reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single person, created, of like nature, His mate, and from them twain scattered (like seeds) countless men and women;- reverence God, through whom ye demand your mutual (rights), and (reverence) the wombs (That bore you): for God ever watches over you. (4:1 - Yusuf Ali)

O ye people ! fear your Lord who created you from a single soul and of its kind created its mate, and from them twain spread many men and women; and fear ALLAH, in Whose name you appeal to one another, and fear him particularly respecting ties of kinship. Verily ALLAH watches over you. (4:1 - Sher Ali)

Qur’an does not state that Eve was created from Adam’s rib. Rather it states mankind was created from single 'Nafs'.

The word Nafs should be left as it is in the translation.

And Allah knows best.

It's not mentioned in the Qur'an.

PICKTHAL: O mankind! Be careful of your duty to your Lord Who created you from a single soul and from it created its mate and from them twain hath spread abroad a multitude of men and women. Be careful of your duty toward Allah in Whom ye claim (your rights) of one another, and toward the wombs (that bare you). Lo! Allah hath been a watcher over you.

From Tafseer Ibn Katheer::
Hawwa' was created before Adam entered Paradise
The Ayah (2:35) indicates that Hawwa' was created before Adam entered Paradise, as
Muhammad bin Ishaq stated. Ibn Ishaq said, "Af ter Allah f inished crit icizing Iblis, and af ter
teaching Adam the names of everything, He said,
(O Adam! Inform them of their names) unt il,

(Verily, You are the Knower, the Wise. )
Then Adam fell asleep, as the People of the Book and other scholars such as Ibn ` Abbas have
stated, Allah took one of Adam's lef t ribs and made f lesh grow in its place, while Adam was
asleep and unaware. Allah then created Adam's wife, Hawwa', f rom his rib and made her a
woman, so that she could be a comfort for him. When Adam woke up and saw Hawwa' next to
him, it was claimed, he said, `My flesh and blood, my wife. ' Hence, Adam reclined with
Hawwa'. When Allah married Adam to Hawwa' and gave him comfort , Allah said to him direct ly,

("O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in the Paradise and eat both of you f reely with pleasure and
delight , of things therein wherever you will, but come not near this t ree or you both will be of
the Zalimin (wrongdoers). '').

Thank you all for the replies.. So basically, there's no indication from the Quran that Eve was created from Adam's rib. However, are we to understand from the hadith above that it's referring to such event literally?? Was Eve literally created from Adam's rib?? or was the hadith referring to such metaphorically?

there is a clear distinction between a nafs and Body, in the Quran, the nafs is like a separate.

I agree with brother mhamzah, that it should be indicated in translation. It becomes more clearer if we look at this ayah:

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ [٧٩:٤٠]

[Hilali-Khan-0] But as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure evil desires, and lusts.
(these translators, may Allah reward them, don't separate or mention nafs, they refer to it as desires, because that is what the nafs feels like)
[pickthall] But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust,
79:40

Here it is indicating as if the nafs needs to be put in check and restrained, or fought against (the bad deeds it motivates).

As for the hadith, it could be literal or not, but I would not feel comfortable making a saying either way. Of course, in a non literal sense, there is a great deal of qualities signified from it.
