How Sin Affects the Heart of the Sinner

The Heart of the Sinner:

When an individual takes part in sinful behavior, his heart becomes covered with darkness, something unseen to our eyes. This is mentioned in the following hadith:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “When a slave commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. But if he gives it up, seeks forgiveness and repents, his heart will be cleansed, but if he repeats it, (the blackness) will increase until it overwhelms his heart. This is the “raan” which Allah mentions, “Nay! But on their hearts is the Raan (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn” [83:14]. [al-Tirmidhi no. 3257; Ibn Majah no. 4234; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Majah, 3422]. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had also said the following about the heart, “In the body there is a piece of flesh which, if it is sound, the entire body will be sound, and if it is corrupt, the entire body will be corrupt. It is the heart” [al-Bukhari no. 52; Muslim no. 1599].

If an individual persists in sinful conduct, without repenting or mending their behavior, then their heart may eventually harden against the Truth. This will lead the individual away from the path of Allah, as mentioned in the following verse of the Qur’an:

“Is one whose heart Allah has opened to Islam, so that he has received Enlightenment from Allah, (no better than one hard-hearted)? Woe to those whose hearts are hardened against celebrating the praises of Allah. They are manifestly wandering (in error)!”
[39:22]

الحمدلله على كل حال
Jazakallahu khayr.

"And We have already sent [messengers] to nations before you, [O Muhammad]; then We seized them with poverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves [to Us].

Then why, when Our punishment came to them, did they not humble themselves? But their hearts became hardened, and Satan made attractive to them that which they were doing.

So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We opened to them the doors of every [good] thing until, when they rejoiced in that which they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were [then] in despair."
6:42-44

"Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient." 57:16

BADTASTEBEARS

Fear Allah
jazakAllah khayr both of you!

Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment. [Surah AlBaqarah 2:7]

JazakAllahu khayran

It was really a much needed reminder.

Have you seen him who takes his own lust (vain desires) as his ilâh (god)? and Allâh knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight. Who then will guide him after Allâh? Will you not then remember? (23)
[Al-Jathiya]

When I woke up this morning these Ayaat came to my mind.

"But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur'ân nor acts on its teachings) verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection." (124) He will say:"O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight (before)." (125) (Allâh) will say: "Like this, Our Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) came unto you, but you disregarded them (i.e. you left them, did not think deeply in them, and you turned away from them), and so this Day, you will be neglected " (126)

Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment. [Surah AlBaqarah 2:7]

This verse actually applies to those who refuse to accept the truth of Islam and worked against the religion. Muslims that fall into sins, should not feel helpless, but rather turn to Allah (The Most Forgiving and Merciful) before death may reach them, which may occur at anytime.

Have you seen him who takes his own lust (vain desires) as his ilâh (god)?...[Al-Jathiya: 23]

This verse is a great reminder that the purpose of life is to serve Allah (The Exalted), by worship and acts of obedience. Persisting in sin or a sinful lifestyle, for example, being part of a sinful relationship such as women living with men they are not permitted to live with and vice versa, is a kind of revering or venerating something above Allah (The Exalted), and is a kind of polytheism or act of shirk. We are reminded by that in this verse, in which the Almighty states that those that disobey Him, have taken their desires as their gods, meaning for veneration and service.

We are reminded of obedience as an act of worship in the following verse, in which Allah (The Exalted) advises Dawud (David) (peace be upon him):

O David! We did indeed make thee a vicegerent on earth: so judge thou between men in truth (and justice): Nor follow thou the lusts (of thy heart), for they will mislead thee from the Path of Allah. For those who wander astray from the Path of Allah, is a Penalty Grievous, for that they forget the Day of Account. [38:26]

Notice once again, how the Lord speaks about those that follow their desires or personal opinions and refuse to show obedience to His Command, as being lost.
Adam (peace be upon him) was removed from Heaven because of disobedience and so was Iblis (Satan). The difference is that Adam (peace be upon him) repented and rectified his wrong and showed obedience to Allah (The Exalted). However, Iblis refused to acknowledge the severity of his act of disobedience and refused repentance and to rectify his wrong by returning to total obedience and enslavement under the Divine Will. Obedience to Allah (The Exalted) is a means of entering Heaven, along with Faith. Of course one must receive the Mercy of Allah.

Ibrahim (Abraham) (peace be upon him) is a great example of a Believer among mankind. He was tested with material and physical trials and persevered by showing obedience to Allah. His final trial was to sacrifice his son, pushing his love, devotion, and obedience to his Lord to the extremity. However, he prevailed once again, and reached a state of perfection before the Almighty, total enslavement.

And Allah (The Glorified and Exalted) Knows Best.
