Swedish thriller writer Henning Mankell has been confirmed as one of the participants in the next international aid flotilla seeking to bring aid to Gaza at the end of June.

Mankell, the author of the popular Wallander series of detective novels, will be among a total of 20 Swedish participants in the "Freedom Flotilla 2," Ship to Gaza Sweden said in a statement.

"Interest in participating in the Freedom Flotilla has been enormous and we have been forced to turn down many people who wanted to show their solidarity with practical actions," the organisers said, providing the names of eight of the Swedes scheduled to take part.

The Swedes, who also include a parliamentarian and a midwife, will be among the "thousands" of activists from around the world set to participate in the convoy, the statement said.

Mankell was one of 11 Swedes who participated in last year's aid flotilla of six ships carrying 682 people from 42 countries that headed for Gaza despite warnings from Israel, which is blockading the Hamas-ruled Palestinian territory.

Israeli marines swarmed aboard the Turkish flagship of the flotilla bound for Gaza, killing nine Turks in international waters and plunging ties with Ankara into deep crisis.

Upon his return to Sweden after that ordeal, Mankell charged that "all the ships (in the flotilla) were hijacked, and this was really piracy."

"What will happen next year when we come back with hundreds of boats? Will (Israel) fire a nuclear bomb?" he asked.

next week taking supplies to Gaza.

Mr Mankell, who was on board a vessel seized by the Israeli army last year, said he would join the operation,
known as Freedom Flotilla 2.

"The Gaza blockade is still going on and that's the reason I'm taking part again, because I've got no reason to stop until the blockade ends," he told AFP.

Israeli forces killed nine Turks on board the Mavi Marmara which was taking aid to Gaza in May 2010.

Speaking about the events,
he said: "You can never use the word success when people are murdered, you can't do that.

"But what you can say is that it had an enormous impact.

"Everyone on the planet knows
what is really going on in Israel and Gaza,
how the Palestinians are treated," the author said.

"So it really, in a way, changed the world,
because no one can say any longer they didn't know about this."

Mankell said he believed the latest operation would force politicians to respond.

I do read the Holy Quran. It is from the essence of the compassion of the Quran that I have with age become more accepting of the choices people make. All humans are given a choice.
Age has taught me not to make very general and blanket statements.

There are good people everywhere and we can not close ourselves to that. Each soul will meet Allah one day, Insha'Allah.

We have to look at ourselves harder. We have to question why we have allowed the subjugation of our brothers and sisters for so long and continue to do so. Why are we so elitist and racists amongst ourselves.

What Israel is doing is wrong. The supporters of Israel are wrong. At this moment I am very angry at the Greek government. They are assisting Israel by not allowing the flotilla to proceed. But, does the action of the government make me angry at the individual. No.

I can not make anyone bow down to the Creator. Each person has to make that choice.

The difference I make is I bow to the Creator. I accept that there are varied nations and peoples. He created them. He will judge us.
