PROTESTERS yesterday called on Bahrain as well as other GCC countries to immediately act to prevent atrocities against innocent civilians in Syria.

The nearly 1,000 protesters, including women and children, gathered in the Buhair area and chanted slogans against the Syrian government, who they accused were "murdering civilians".

"We are unhappy with the fact that while people are being butchered in Syria, the GCC governments are not doing anything," said Al Asala MP Abdulhaleem Murad, who led the protesters.

"Arab governments should take a lead in bringing sanctions against Syria and not wait for the United States or European countries to take action.

Atrocities

"We should be concerned about our brothers and sisters in Syria and we should take steps to prevent atrocities against them," he said.

The rally also called for Bahrain and the other GCC countries to immediately recognise the Syrian opposition front.

"That will give our brothers a lot of confidence," said Mr Murad.

The rally also called for a boycott of Iranian, Russian and Chinese products.

"We have called for a boycott of Russian and Chinese products because these countries have used their United Nations veto power to not block action against the Syrian government.

"This is grossly unfair.

"We should not use anything from Russia or China in protest."

Mr Murad said Iranian goods should also be boycotted since that country has been meddling in Bahrain's internal affairs.

The Al Asala bloc earlier called on the GCC, Arab League and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference to punish the Syrian regime in a bid to end the killings.

Bloc members want the region's powers to intervene in Syria, believing that would also have major consequences for Israel - which it said was supported by Syria.

Mr Murad said the Syrian people were victims of injustice and everyone knew about the crimes of the regime that had left children, women and the elderly dead.

He said Iran was an evil state trying to take over the Arab world and the Arabs' job was to stop them because they were helping the Syrian regime continue its operations against its people.
