AR-RAHMAN (The Most Merciful): Allah is the One who wills His Mercy and Goodness upon all his creation, uninterrupted, continuously, with consistency, at all times, without condition, without limits, without distinction between the good and bad, the faithful and the rebellious, the beloved and the hated. As He Himself states in the Glorious Quran: “My punishment – I afflict with it whom I will, but My Mercy encompasses all things” (Surah Al-A’raf: 156). When Allah completed the creation, He wrote the following verse, which is with Him on His throne (Arsh): “My mercy overcomes My wrath”. The greatest of Allah’s Mercy upon us is the creation of our beloved Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) as expressed by Allah Himself in the Qur’an: "We sent thee not (O Muhammad), but as a mercy for all creatures” (Surah Al-Anbiya – 107). Mercy within us begins with a fineness of feeling, a concern felt in the heart when one knows someone is in distress and the pressure of this pain moves up to help the person to alleviate their suffering. Allah’s Mercy is beyond all these conditions and surrounds our very own existence from before we are born until after death overtakes us, like an unseen, unobserved and virtual force-field. Ponder the foetus in the womb, how it is blanketed with layers and layers of cushion-like tissue. Ponder the vulnerability of the infant to its very own surroundings and how Allah has made its body more tolerant. Ponder the adult, how in its prime, is strong enough to bear the knocks, twists and strains of daily life. Ponder the elderly person, who is now weak and feeble and How Allah by now has given Him/ Her enough experience to take him to the furthest limits of the remainder of life. The manifestation of this name of Allah within yourself is by using your freedom of choice for the goodness of yourself and of others. Feel the pain of the misguided one as well as those who are unfortunate, not with condemnation, but with pity and assistance and find conform and hope in Allah’s promise that His compassion by far surpasses His wrath.

AL-MALIK (The Absolute Ruler): Allah is the exclusive Ruler of the whole universe, of everything that He created within it and all that exists outside it, the visible, the invisible, of all that was from before the beginning to what shall continue to be after the end. He created and set the rules around the laws of physics and relativity for us to ponder and marvel upon just how everything works like clockwork in accordance and harmonisation with everything else, so that we recognise there is none like Him. Allah says in the Qur’an: "He hath created the heavens and the earth with truth. He maketh night to succeed day, and He maketh day to succeed night, and He constraineth the sun and the moon to give service, each running on for an appointed term. Is not He the Mighty, the Forgiver?” (Surah Az-Zumar: 5). What happens is always what Allah wills and what He does not will shall never happen. Allah is not in need of His Kingdom but His Kingdom needs and depend on Him, whether they know it or not. Allah rules solely by Himself and does not need assistance to exercise His Rule. Only His Will, His Rule and His Justice will prevail in the end. He has created the universe as the workplace for His creation just as how He has created the Day of Judgment as the great court of justice. In this world we sow our deeds and on the Day of Judgement we shall reap its rewards. Everyone will receive their due recompense and there is none other than He within whom to take refuge. Recognise this name of Allah by being subservient to His Divine rules and not following one’s own nafs. Know that Allah has appointed us to be His deputies and rulers in our own realms, for the kingdom of a person is his or her own being. Our subjects being our tongues, our eyes, our ears, our hands and our armies being our ambitions, our desires, our lusts, our anger. Know that if we can control our own inner subjects and armies then Allah will let us be masters of our own destinies and help guide others to the path of righteousness in their lives and affairs making it a means for their salvation and of our very own.

AL-HADI (The Guide): Allah is the One who created guidance, thus leading His believers to goodness and benefit. The highest of His guidance is that which leads His true servants to recognise the essence and uniqueness of His Attributes, that distinguishes Himself from the rest of creation. Allah guides every creature to that which it needs for its own survival. Ponder the Monarch Butterfly, a creation that lives only for a few weeks or months, who guided it in its countless millions to migrate and find a specific spot (i.e. Oyamel Fir Forests of Mexico) thousands of kilometres away, that their ancestors left the previous spring without having been there themselves before? Allah states in The Holy Qur’an: “He said: Our Lord is He who gave unto everything its nature, then guided it aright.” (Surah Ta-Ha: 50). The result of guidance is faith. The opposite of faith is to be led astray, the result of which is infidelity. Humankind is made like a pair of scales, we have the potential to incline one way or the other. For us to turn to the side of faith or to the side of infidelity, some weighting must be placed on the opposite side of the scale. Allah is the One who creates this weighting in the form of guidance or misguidance. He is the Creator of the cause of faith, which delights the heart and grows the soul, and of faithlessness, which delights the ego and stunts the soul. He guides whoever He wills and He leads astray whoever He wills. Whomever Allah has guided, none can lead astray. Whomever Allah has misguided, none can lead to the straight path. Know that Allah does not forcibly and without reason leads His servants astray. He leads people astray when we misuse our will and turns our potential towards infidelity. In our creation, faith is essential and premeditated, whereas faithlessness is unnecessary and accidental. Faith is intrinsic to human beings as reminded by Allah in The Holy Qu’ran: “And (remember) when thy Lord brought forth from the Children of Adam, from their reins, their seed, and made them testify of themselves, (saying): Am I not your Lord ? They said: Yea, verily. We testify. (That was) lest ye should say at the Day of Resurrection: Lo! of this we were unaware” (Surah A’raf: 172). It is this covenant with Allah that is the reason for His guidance and bounties upon us. We may not remember the promise made by our souls but that does not invalidate the pact. Recognise this name of Allah by acknowledging the body He has given us to live in, the sustenance for it’s maintenance and a mind to perceive things that will remind us of His existence and our covenant to Him. Know that He has given us His Book (The Holy Qur'an) and the Seal of All Messengers (our beloved Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) to teach us and confirm the covenant, which is all part of Allah’s guidance. As we wish it, will it and abide by it, Allah’s guidance for us will also increase.

DHUL-JALALI WAL-IKRAM (Lord of Majesty and Bounty): Allah is Most Majestic and Most Bountiful. There is no perfection that does not belong to Him. There is no honour that comes from other than Him. He is the exclusive Owner of Majesty. Nothing can exist by itself, nor can anything sustain itself apart from He, Himself. Allah reminds us in The Holy Qur’an: “Everyone that is thereon will pass away; There remaineth but the Countenance of thy Lord of Might and Glory. Which is it, of the favours of your Lord, that ye deny ?” (Surah Ar-Rahman: 26-28). In His Majesty, He can destroy all things instantaneously, at the same ease He created them. To make evident of His Generosity, He has bestowed upon us His countless bounties and honour, which He does not seize when we are disobedient. On what power are you depending on when you revolt against Him? Do not attribute your blessings to your own doing. What He provides is to make you see that the real Giver is no other than Him, the Truly Honourable One. All is in need of Him, all comes from Him and to Him shall be the final return. Yet to tie every person to other people, to tie every creature to the rest of creation, Allah uses an invisible rope called ‘need’. He uses each person, each creature as a means, as a vehicle to give to another what it needs. The manifestation of this name within the believer is when they recognise the vehicle through which Allah’s blessing come and is never ungrateful for it, no matter how insignificant it may seem at the time. They give all thanks to Him for their worldly needs, but also seeks from what He has taught us on how to obtain His eternal blessings i.e. by spending upon others, for His Sake alone, that which He gave us through the hands of others. The true servant fears only Allah and bows their head to no other than Him in the hope of receiving only from Him. A sword held to their throat is no different to the gold poured at the feet, they are neither worried by one or overjoyed by the other, for them Allah alone and His promise is sufficient.

AR-RASHID (The Righteous Teacher): Allah is the Righteous Teacher, the One who ordained righteousness upon all His creation so they may be led aright in all their affairs. He is the most merciful of teachers, the One who guided us upon the straight path (of salvation) through the unblemished teachings to the best of all creation (our beloved Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) so he could convey His message in its entirety to the rest of mankind. Allah states in the Holy Qur’an: “We shall make thee read (O Muhammad) so that thou shalt not forget. Save that which Allah willeth. Lo! He knoweth the disclosed and that which still is hidden. And We shall ease thy way unto the state of ease.” (Surah Al-A’la: 6-8). Allah never fails to demonstrate His wisdom in His actions as everything He does has a clear and beneficial purpose. His teaching is so effective that it becomes the nature of everything in the universe, that is attentive and heedful to His call, to willingly submit freely to His commands. In His wisdom, He leads all matters to their perfect conclusion and in precise order. He has taught us bliss, prosperity and salvation through His Qur’an. Although He is All-Powerful, He does not enforce what He teaches but leaves it to the individual to ponder and act upon it. He shows the way to peace and spiritual prosperity as a reward for those who act upon His teachings and He chooses to let us gain our rewards by our own decisions through the adherence of His commands. The manifestation of this name within the believer is when they are conscious of His teachings and use their God given intelligence to discipline and educate themselves, their egos to be subservient to His Divine Laws and to live in accordance with them. Know that Islam is the religion in which learning is obligatory. As we learn from Allah, we will start to see the perfect order within and outside ourselves. Know that the Greatest Teacher will make His greatest students recognise His Will, His Power, His Love, His Generosity and His Compassion. He will make them love for His Sake alone, make them live to do what He says and make them work to seek His pleasure in the hope of becoming righteous.

AS-SALAM (The Saviour): Allah is the One who saves His believing servants from all forms of danger and harm in this temporal world. He promises them peace, comfort, blessing and security in the eternally Hereafter. In the Holy Qur’an, Allah says the Beneficent Lord sends salam (peace) to the faithful in Paradise (Surah Ya-Sin - 58). As-Salam is the attribute of being free from all forms of defect, error, imperfection, danger and trouble. It also means the One who is persisting, uninterrupted, unfaltering and unweakened, continued beyond eternity. Allah is the true source of safety from all that is bad for His and in His creation i.e. one’s own devils and desires. Know that none of Allah’s actions are intentionally aimed at harming His creation, although at times of pain and trouble, which we often bring upon ourselves, we may think our suffering is due to His will. Ponder, when an arm has gangrene and must be amputated, one rarely considers how such a loss will save one’s life. Know that in every pain a blessing is hidden. The manifestation of this name within the believer is when they find peace of mind and security of the hearts through Allah's remembrance in good and bad times and in all their states. The true believe is the one who is a protector of their family from wrongful and unlawful acts and saves oneself from the slavery of ones own ego so that Allah may be their Protector from trouble, need and shame. Recognise this name of Allah by secretly entrusting your affairs in Him alone, depending solely on Him for your needs and acknowledging that, through His Grace, you will be saved from all difficulties and harm. Clean your darkened and rusted hearts from hatred, envy, treachery and vengeance. Let His Light penetrate and enlighten your deadened heart so that He may be Your Saviour in this world and the hereafter (Ameen!).

AL-KHAFID (The Abaser), AR-RAFI’ (The Exalter): Allah, Most High is the One who raises His subjects to honour, fame and glory and it is He, who can cast them down, faster than the batter of an eyelid, to the lowest of low, both in this world and the hereafter. Allah reminds us in The Holy Qur’an about exercising these divine attributes on the Day of Resurrection: “When the event befalleth. There is no denying that it will befall.. Abasing (some), exalting (others)” – Surat Al-Waqi`ah (Verses 1-3). Allah’s action of abasement is manifested upon those who fail to recognise Him, those who refuse to obey His commands and those who exalt themselves in pride and arrogance, thus becoming tyrants upon themselves by harming their own souls (through their unjust intentions and actions) and others (by dismissing their rights). Know that the one abased by Allah can only be raised by Him.. Allah is Most Merciful and such treatment is a reminder to shake the heedless servant out of their slumber and sleep. Remember, although it is Allah who exalts and abases, the reason for this is always you. In His Mercy, He delays His harsh lessons so that you may realise your wrongdoing and change your wicked ways. Do not have a false sense of security in your life, for your actions will always result in either terrible abasement or rewarding exaltation. Allah exalts those who are pure hearted, those who have sweet tongues with His remembrance, those who have kind words for each other, those who prefer to give rather than receive, those who hide the faults of others (instead of criticise at the first opportunity), those who build instead of destroy and those who are strong yet gentle. For such servants, Allah exalts them by enlightening their hearts with faith, knowledge and truth, thus making all His other creation love and respect them. As long as they persist in the path of righteousness, Allah continues to enlighten their state. However, for those who refuse to acknowledge the purpose of their creation and the constant reminders of the Lord, letting their egos ride them and lead them astray into lies and deception, setting traps for others, fighting shamelessly with others, these are the unfaithful ones. They are like animals dressed up in fine clothes, making a lot of noise and raising a lot of dust, in that they attract the wrong type of attention but they are no more than dogs scrapping for a bone. Allah the Abaser will no doubt strip them of their fine clothes and show their real form to the people so they recognise them for what they really are, and learn from their own treachery and serve as a lesson to others.

AL MU'MIN (The Inspirer of Faith): Allah is the Illuminator behind the penetrating light of faith that settles and grows within the qalb (spiritual heart). He is The Comforter and The Protector of the believing servants, especially the ones who take refuge solely in Him and seek Him via no intermediaries. Unequivocal faith in Allah is the ultimate security that protects one from all dangers and harm, thus making it one of His greatest gifts upon mankind. Through His Infinite Mercy and Love for us, Allah has sent, throughout the ages, His Prophets (Peace Be Upon Them All) and Revealed Books, to teach us, through them, His Word so that we recognise the attribute of perfection in His Names and be inspired in our faith in Him. We all have enemies, often masquerading as “friends”, who continuously try to harm us from all directions, disturb our peace and attempt to lead us astray. The worst of these enemies is our own Egos (Nafs) and the accursed Shaitan, after which comes the tyrants, the maligners and the enviers. When a person says “Auzubillah” (I seek refuge in Allah), they are in fact seeking refuge in the attribute of “Al-Mu’min”. Know that Allah never refuses anyone who takes refuge in Him but it is important that the one who is seeking protection has complete faith in Allah. The faith in the heart is essential, if that leaves (may Allah protect us from this - Ameen!), one enters the ranks of disbelief (Kufr). Whoever confirms their faith with His words while their hearts is not with Allah is a liar. Whoever acts as having faith but have none is a hypocrite. However if a person is faithful in heart but for some reason cannot display their faith openly out of fear, remains of the faithful. The manifestation of this name within the believer is when they are mindful of all their actions in order to safeguard their own faith and is always the dependable one in whom others find peace, safety and security for their life, property and honour. Be a servant, who does not deny to help those who take refuge with you in seeking Allah’s help and then you will sure have a taste of Al-Mu’min.

AL-BASIR (The All-Seeing): Allah sees all that has passed, all that is and all that will be, before time itself, when He moved the sea of nothingness into existence, and until the end of time, after the Last Judgement has been cast. He sees a black ant crawling on the blackest of stones on the darkest of nights with the same level of effortlessness and ease as he is able to see the most secret of thoughts and feelings that passes through our hearts and minds. He is able to see an infinite number of things simultaneously, all with the same level of focus, attention and detail. “He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days; then He mounted the Throne. He knoweth all that entereth the earth and all that emergeth therefrom and all that cometh down from the sky and all that ascendeth therein; and He is with you wheresoever ye may be. And Allah is Seer of what ye do” (Surah Al-Hadid: 57 - 4).

Recognise this name of Allah by knowing that He has given you the precious ability of sight so to may see different shapes, sizes, colours and movement. The least you can do is believe the eyes that Allah has given you by observing the universe around you and recognising His signs in His creation. Although you cannot see Allah, you should acknowledge that He is looking at you, watching you, seeing you, not for how you present yourself on the outside, but also for what we hide in the deepest crevices of your heart and mind.

Know that everything in existence is without question under Allah’s sublime view. His sight not only encompasses the visible, but extends to every state of existence and every circumstance. Whenever Allah creates something, grants something, brings something to life, causes its death, guides someone or allows someone to stray, it is in accordance with His Perfect Wisdom,, His Perfect Knowledge and His Complete Vision that nothing can ever escape.
