French workers fired for fasting

Tensions between French authorities and the country's Islamic community resurfaced on Tuesday after it emerged that four summer camp instructors had been sacked for fasting during Ramadaan.

In a row that echoed last year's controversy over a law banning women from wearing full veils on French territory, Muslim leaders denounced a Communist-run town council's dismissal of the workers on health and safety grounds.

The four had been employed temporarily by the town of Genevilliers in the Paris suburbs to help run a summer holiday sports camp in southwestern France.

They were dismissed on July 20, the first day of Ramadaan, after an inspector visited the camp and told them they were endangering children's safety by not eating or drinking between dawn and dusk.

Although they were fully paid for the week they had remaining on their short-term contracts, the instructors plan to contest their dismissal through labour courts.

The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) described the town's actions as “an attack on religious freedom” and said it was considering pressing charges against Genevilliers council for discrimination.

CFCM President Mohammed Moussaoui added: “Hundreds of millions of people fast for Ramadaan every year without it having any impact on their professional activities.”

Genevilliers Mayor Jacques Bourgoin defended the decision to remove the four employees from the camp, a stance which won strong backing from the far-right National Front.

“They did not respect the terms of their contract in a way that could have endangered the physical safety of the children they were responsible for,” said a statement issued by the mayor's office.

“This lack of nourishment and hydration could have resulted in these employees not being in full possession of the means required to ensure that activities at the camp were correctly and safely run, as well as the physical safety of the children in their charge.”

Nicole Varet, an aide to the mayor, said the decision to dismiss the four employees had been influenced by an incident three years ago in which a fasting camp worker had been taken ill while driving, resulting in an accident in which a child was seriously injured.

Genevilliers town hall later issued a statement saying that in order to avoid heightening tensions further, it would for the month of August drop the clause from contracts for workers at the camp that obliged them to eat lunch.

The four sacked workers believe the safety argument is a smokescreen for anti-Muslim prejudice.

One of them, who asked to be identified only by his first name, Samir, said their treatment had been “unfair and unacceptable” and that he was glad it had been brought into the public domain.

“We are thinking about going to court to get clear answers to our questions,” he told AFP. “Do people have the right not to eat during the day? Are doctors who observe Ramadaan putting their patients' lives in danger?”

A spokesman for the National Front said the Gennevilliers mayor had made the right decision, adding that: “Those who oppose this wise decision are making a mockery of the principles of safety and secularism.”

The row over the Ramadaan sackings erupted as France brushed off US State Department criticism of its ban on veils which fully cover women's faces, introduced last year by the administration of former president Nicolas Sarkozy.

In its 2011 International Religious Freedom Report, the State Department expressed concern over a “rising number of European countries, including Belgium and France, whose laws restricting dress adversely affected Muslims and others”. - AFP

Wa 'alaikumassalam warahmatullah,
In the name of secularism..how many of these draconian rules will they carry out?I have decided never to land a foot in france or any of these countries in sha' Allah unless these laws are repealed. They don't have the least sense of decency left in them.

2 pig heads hung outside French mosque with puddle of blood

China is doing the same on a larger extent(stopping Uigher muslims from fasting in Ramadan).Allahul musta'an.

Akh what do you go to those nasty sites for? I mean those people are really really full of hatred. Their comments disgusted me.

One comment said the four people removed are back on their jobs? Or did I read wrong?

Btw if we just sit and talk we'll be eaten alive and we won't be able to do anything about it. The Muslims in such lands should migrate, that's the answer to their problems. But the problem is, where to?

I visited that site sometimes to get a political perspective of how they view things ,after reading such vile comments it is clear that these people neither have a drop of conscience or decency left in them.I have been encountering and trying to ignore such similar posts on facebook, relating to muslims in Assam and Burma, but they wouldn't let me sleep in peace. It has reached to such an extent that it cant be ignored if we sit on the computer,at least.I pray that Allah guide them but if guidance is not in their fate, may Allah's ghadab be on them and may they be humiliated in this world and the hereafter.Ameen.

About reinstatement of the muslim worker in France..Allahu 'aalam sister I have no idea,I browsed news and no such news came up.

I do agree that muslims from such countries should migrate, but are there any ansaar, that will help them?

Time to change. Let's learn to change:

Very disturbing news...they respond to islam with such hate and they dont spare any energy in doing harm...
And i read recently about a horrible event that happened back in 2005 in a danish newspaper contest:

The Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy began after 12 editorial cartoons, most of which depicted islam prophet Muhammad, were published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten on 30 September 2005. The newspaper announced that this publication was an attempt to contribute to the debate regarding criticism of Islam and self-censorship. (what is the connection ?)

Danish Muslim organizations that objected to the depictions responded by holding public protests attempting to raise awareness of Jyllands-Posten's publication. Further examples of the cartoons were soon reprinted in newspapers in more than 50 other countries, further deepening the controversy.

Critics of the cartoons described them as Islamophobic or racist, and argued that they are blasphemous to people of the Muslim faith, are intended to humiliate a Danish minority, or are a manifestation of ignorance about the history of Western imperialism.
Supporters have said that the cartoons illustrated an important issue in a period of Islamic terrorism ( ??? ) and argued that their publication is a legitimate exercise of the right of free speech, explicitly tied to the issue of self-censorship. They argued that Muslims were not targeted in a discriminatory way, since unflattering cartoons about other religions (or their leaders) are frequently printed.

walikumsalam,

Well, truth be told, this is the result of muslims not being active in france. I mean if your just gonna work and eat all day, these rules are bound to come and attack you. France has a huge population of muslims but yet they are not politically active or anything unfortunately. Seriously muslims in the west should get active and get their messages across. In countries like England and France, when you even have issues of 'is voteing haram or hallal' and many abstaining from it, then you get an idea of how deluded some muslims are. France has a history towards hating islam and its laws, so if you cannot be active and deal with it, just migrate. same goes with other western countries.
