Pork Enzymes used in US products

Assalymualakium,
I recently found out that some of the products made in the US contain a pork enzyme. Some are called glycerin which is used mostly in lotions. My question is does anyone know if this to be true and where can I find information on products that are indeed Halal or Haram? I called one of the companies that listed the ingredient glycerin and they said that it is possible that it is derived from pork but wasn't exactly sure if it was. It seems as if there are hidden pork enzymes in products as well because I called the number for Frito Lays and asked if there was pork in the hot cheetos and she stated that they used to use a pork enzyme to make the cheese but no longer do that and sent me to the website that contains a list of products that do NOT contain the pork enzyme. Anyone else here of these things?

Yes sister, it is common for companies include stuff in the food that is not only haram but also detrimental to the health. Some of the stuff used by US companies is banned in Europe. Rennet and glycerin are usually pork by products. It's best to look at the ingredients label before buying anything. The links below will help inshallah.

Also, here's a good link on those codes (E240, 160, etc) that are used in the ingredients label instead of the names.

Thank you sister. These websites are really helpful. It will be time consuming to read all ingredients when buying things but well worth it.

Sister, try and look for the Kosher sign when buying products - it really helps to narrow down brands and products. Also, not always do ingredients list whether the product has animal by-products or not. The best way is to contact the companies. Muslim Consumer Group has very detailed listings.

This website also lists a few halal and haram products.

EDIT: The people at Frito-Lays sure are sneaky. They told you Flamin Hot cheetos don't have the pork enzyme, but it still has some other animal-derivative, probably non-zabiha beef enzyme. Which makes it still haram. You can check out the halal Lays products by looking at their Kosher list:

Thanks a bunch. From now on we are only buying products with the Kosher sign and you are correct Frito-Lay is sneaky, sure they say there products doesn't have pork enzymes but it's the cheeses and such that make it a non-halal product so once again it's Kosher only for us.

For a truly Kosher product you'll need the sign with the U inside of the circle. This has been certified Kosher by the Jewish Orthodox Union.
The sign with the K inside of the circle has not been certified, rather, it is only the manufacturer who 'claims' his product meets the Kosher standards.
