Israeli Soldiers Kill Palestinian Government Minister on Human Rights Day,
Palestinians halt security cooperation with Israel after minister's death.

A Palestinian government Minister peacefully protesting against Israel’s at West Bank was killed on Wednesday after being attacked by Israeli soldiers who fired massive amounts of tear gas at him.
Ziad Abu Ein, 55, who was the head of the Anti-Wall and Settlement Commission, died in Ramallah Hospital after the assault. He was part of a peaceful protest against the wall close to the village of Turmusayya, north-east of Ramallah.
What makes Abu Ein’s death all the more deplorable is that Wednesday 10 December is celebrated around the world as Human Rights Day.
Witnesses, including a journalist and a Reuters photographer, said Abu Ein was assaulted by Israeli soldiers before he died with reports that he collapsed after being head-butted. Photographs of Abu Ein showed him on the ground and in obvious distress.
“This was a non-violent protest held within Occupied Palestine on Human Rights Day. The death of this man, a government minister, is a clear indication of the brutal and violent nature of Israeli occupation. It is also disgraceful to see Israel downplaying the Soldiers' violence,” said Shamiul Joarder, head of Public Affairs at FOA.
“There would be international condemnation and outrage if the person killed was an Israeli Minister. Governments across the globe, including our own, should condemn this death as they do Israeli deaths,” he added.
Activists said they were planting olive trees when the soldiers attacked them and fired large amounts of tear gas at the group.
Abu Ein was a father of four and a member of Fatah. He previously held the position of deputy minister of prisoners’ affairs.
