Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyyah is reported to have said: One cannot rid himself of the torments of the grave till one gets rid of its causes.

The most effective device which safeguards one from the tortures of the grave is that before a man goes to bed, he should, for a moment, examine himself as to what he has earned and what he has lost on that day.

Before he sleeps, he should repent for the sins he had committed. As soon as he gets up, he should direct his attention towards doing good deeds.

Considering his life a boon, he should try to do away with imperfections in his character. Allah shows kindness to those whom He Wills and guides them to goodness." (Source: "Kitab-Al-Ruh")

Ibn al-Qayyim said: "Some people ask, why should I pray if everything is already decreed for me?'

To such people we ask, why do you eat when you are hungry even though it's decreed for you that you were going to eat?" [Ad-Daa' wa Dawaa' P 18]

Ibn al-Qayyim said,

“Reliance in Allāh comprises the stations of leaving one’s affairs to Him (al-Tafwīḍ), seeking His aid and assistance (al-Istiʾānah) and contentment (al-Riḍā). It is inconceivable to have reliance without them.

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (rahimahullaah) said:

"Were it not that Allah treats His slaves with the remedy of trials and calamities, they would transgress and overstep the mark. When Allah wills good for His slaves, He gives them the medicine of calamities and trials them according to their situation, so as to cure them from all fatal illnesses and diseases, until He purifies and cleanses them, and then makes them qualified for the most honourable position in this world, which is that of being true slaves of Allah (‘Uboodiyyah), and for the greatest reward in the Hereafter, which is that of seeing Him and being close to Him.”

Imām Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله: The soundness of the heart will not be complete until it is safe from five things;

• Shirk that contradicts Tawḥīd
• Bid’ah (innovation in Deen) that opposes Sunnah
• Lustful desire that opposes commandment (of Allāh)
• Heedlessness that contradicts the remembrance (of Allāh)
• Whims that contradict singling out (Allāh in worship) and sincerity

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (rahimahullaah) said:

The difference between a sincere adviser and an unjust critic is that the sincere adviser does not harbor any animosity towards you if you don’t accept his naseehah. Rather he suffices by saying (to himself), ‘My reward is with Allah whether he accepts it or not.’ He makes du’aa for you in your absence, he does not mention your faults, and nor does he publicize it. Whereas the unjust critic does the opposite.

Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahullah said,

"It may happen that you are asleep and the rewards of good deeds are accumulating for you. Whether it be from a poor man you aided, a hungry person you fed, a sad person you made happy, or a distressed person whom you helped. Never belittle the amount of khayr any good deed can have even if it seems small."

"How can one feel secure, who has an unmerciful wife, an unforgiving son, a distrusting neighbour, a friend who gives no advice, a partner who misjudges him, an enemy whose hostility never ceases, a soul that is inclined to evil, an adorned world, vain desires, influential lusts, furious anger, the deception of Satan, and controlling weakness?

If Allah rescued and guided him, all those problems would be under control, and if Allah deserted and abandoned him, leaving him on his own, all these distresses would cause his destruction." (Ibn Al Qayyim Al Jawziyyah)

"Stand firm against evil thoughts, for if you fail to do so, they will become ideas, if you do not, they will become desires, so fight against them. If you do not, they will become a form of determination and intention, if you do not resist, they will become actions, and if you do not follow them up with their opposite, they will become habits that will be hard to quit." Ibn al-Qayyim said: "Striving against ones own self ( Jihaadun-Nafs) is four levels:

(i) That he strives upon learning the guidance and the true Religion, which is such that there can be no success or bliss for the soul in this life or in the Hereafter except through it;

(ii) That he strives to act upon what he has learned;

(iii) That he strives to call to it, and teach it to those who do not know it;

(iv) That he accustoms his soul to having patience and perseverance upon the hardships involved in calling to Allah and the harm caused by the people, and he patients bears this for Allah's sake.

So if a person completes these four stages then he becomes one of the rightly-guided and wise scholars and teachers (ar-Rabbaaniyyoon)."

Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahullah said,

" If Allah wants well for a slave, He strips away from his heart the ability to see his own good deeds and speaking about them with his tongue, and preoccupies him with seeing his own sin, and it continues to remain in front of his eyes until he enters Jannah. ”
