"Grief, sorrow and distress only occur from two directions:
One of it is: The desire for the worldly life and having a zeal for it;
And the second is: shortening in the actions of obedience and piety.

"If Allaah سُبحانه وتعالى opens for you (gives you success to doing that action) the door of standing for the night prayer, then DO NOT look at those who are sleeping with a look of disdain.

And if Allaah سُبحانه وتعالى opens for you the door of fasting then DO NOT look at those who break their fast with a look of disdain.

And if Allaah سُبحانه وتعالى opens for you the door of jihad then DO NOT look at those who sit and do not participate with a look of disdain.

Maybe the one who sleeps, breaks his fast and sits is CLOSER to Allaah than you!

Ibnul-Qayyim رحمه الله said:
"And indeed that you spent the night sleeping and woke up regretful is BETTER than the one who spent the night standing and woke up admiring himself for indeed the one who admires himself actions are not accepted !!”

"The owner of the heart combines his own heart and the meanings of the Qur'an. He finds that it is as if it was written in his heart and he reads and comprehends it with his heart. Many people do not possess a perfectly prepared and aware heart, namely a completely living heart. Such a heart needs a witness to distinguish between right and wrong.

The life of his heart; his light and his natural brightness do not reach the level of the owner of a living and aware heart. The way to lead him to this guidance is to dedicate his hearing to the words of the Qur'an and his heart to think, meditate, and comprehend its meaning. He will then know that it is the truth." " Every time you feel disheartened by your being alone on this path, then look to those who came before you and strive to catch up with them, and turn away from everyone else, they will not benefit you in the least with Allaah. If you happen to see them somewhere along the path that you are upon, then DO NOT turn to look at them, for if you do so they will distract you and simply delay your progress."

"There is no greater evidence than the formation of this human being with its organs, abilities and properties and the flesh, bones, veins, nerves, ligaments, openings, systems, desires and insight that it contains. All that is simply a drop in the ocean. The idea of the creation of man is enough to make any person ponder, and if he does, he will re,member what the Messengers told us about Allah: His Names and Attributes.

Allah the Exalted then told mankind that His Knowledge encompasses humanity and that He, the Exalted, knows what each individual whispers to himself. He informed us that He is close to man through His Knowledge and is close to man like a vein that is inside his body. Moreover, He is even closer to him than this vein; He has more power over him and more knowledge of him. " (Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyyah)

How to Increase One's Love of Allah

Ibn al-Qayyim – may Allaah have mercy upon him– says:

“The reasons which cause mahabbah of Allâh to develop, are ten:

Firstly : Reciting the Qur‘ân, reflecting and understanding its meaning and its intent.

Secondly : Drawing closer to Allâh – the Most High – through optional deeds, after fulfilling the obligatory duties.

Thirdly : Being continuous in the dhikr (remembrance) of Allâh, with the tongue, the heart and the limbs – under all circumstances. The more constant the dhikr, the more mahabbah develops and intensifies.

Fourthly : Giving precedence to what Allâh loves over personal loves, when being overcome by desires.

Fifthly : Contemplating and deliberating over the Names and Attributes of Allâh.

Sixthly : Recognising and remembering the favours and bounties of Allâh – both the manifest and hidden.

Seventhly : To be humble and submissive before Allâh – and this is the greatest matter.

Eightly : To be in seclusion reciting the Qur‘ân, during that time in which Allâh descends to the lowest heaven (which is the last third of every night), finishing this recitation with seeking Allâh’s forgiveness and repenting to Him.

Ninthly: To sit in the gatherings of true and sincere lovers of Allâh, reaping the fruits of their speech, and not to speak except if there is benefit in it and that you know that such talk will increase you in goodness and that it will benefits others as well.

Tenthly: To stay clear of all those causes which distances the heart from Allâh – the Mighty and Majestic.

So these are the ten reasons which cause the person to develop true love for Allâh and to reach the rank of al-muhabbah, by which he reaches his Beloved.”

Humility is known to Allah, their names and attributes, his greatness, and to venerate him, love him and feel overwhelmed before Him; also of knowing oneself, with their faults and weaknesses. So it can be developed an attitude of humility, which means feel powerless before Allah, and be humble and compassionate towards his servants, so the person does not feel superior to no one or think you have rights on the others; on the other hand, thinks that the others are better than him, and that their rights are rather than their own. This is the characteristic that Allah gives to those who love, honor and approaches towards Him.

"When it is said to them: 'Come to what Allah has sent down and to the Messenger (SAW)', you [Muhammad SAW]see the hypocrites turn away from you [Muhammad SAW] with aversion' [Qur'an 4: 61]

Ibn Qayyim said, 'Here Allah describes turning away from that which the Messenger (SAW) brought and turning towards something else as being the essence of hypocrisy.' ....

Ibn Qayyim added in Tayseer Al-Azeez Al-Hameed: 'This indicates that whoever is called to refer for judgement to the Qur'an and Sunnah, and does not accept that and refuses to do so, is one of the hypocrites.

The verb 'yasudoon' (turn away) is intransitive, i.e. it does not take an object; it means that they turn away, not that they prevent others.

If Allah has ruled that the one who turns away is a hypocrite, then how about the one who goes further than that and turns other people away from referring for judgement to the Qur'an and Sunnah through his words, teaching and books, still claims that he means no more than good will and reconciliation, good will through his actions and reconciliation between Taghut to which he refers for judgement and the Qur'an and Sunnah" (Source: "Man Made Laws V's Shariah" By Abdur Rahman Ibn Salih Al-Mahmood, P 93-94, 2003)

The Categories of Patience

Ibn al-Qayyim

And know that patience is of three kinds: sabr whilst (fulfilling) the orders of Allâh,

[ii] sabr whilst (abandoning and keeping away) from the prohibitions of Allâh, and

[iii] sabr with the Decree of Allâh with respect to afflictions and difficulties.”
