Charlie Hebdo, does everyone feel for them?

“…the editorial staff of Hebdo consistently aimed to provoke Muslims. They ascribe to the same edgy-white-guy mentality that many American cartoonists do: nothing is sacred, sacred targets are funnier, lighten up, criticism is censorship. And just like American cartoonists, they and their supporters are wrong.

White men punching down is not a recipe for good satire, and needs to be called out. People getting upset does not prove that the satire was good.

And,
this is the hardest part, the murder of the satirists in question does not prove that their satire was good. Their satire was bad, and remains bad. Their satire was racist, and remains racist.” (Jacob Canfield, Western Journalist)

Assalammu Alaikum. I'd like everyone to look at the blog article below. I have kept most of it as it is, even the capitalised sentences are from the writer himself. The illustration and piece about Kate Middleton under the article is part of the original blog article as well.

"First it was the Danish cartoons, reprinted by the press in almost every Western countries, then this filthy American film, and then French caricatures.

Vilifying the Prophet (saw) by the West is claimed to be done under the pretence of Freedom of Speech, when in reality it is all about the Freedom to insult and offend.

Hence all this talk about Freedom of Expression is just a smokescreen behind which lie the old European values of racism, intolerance & bigotry. Charlie Hebdo... is one of those tabloids that *repeatedly* insulted the Prophet (saw).

I MEAN NAKED PICTURES OF THE PROPHET (SAW) ??????

The reality is that there is no such thing as absolute Freedom of Expression in the West because there are *red lines* that are applied in *specific* circumstances but not in others.

--> British tabloids declined to publish topless pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton sunbathing because it might be offensive to the Royals.
--> BBC censored anti-Thatcher song Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead because playing it in full would have been “insensitive”.
--> The Pogues’ song "Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six" was banned on British airwaves in 1988 because it was deemed too controversial and pro-IRA
--> Left-wing French cartoonist Maurice Sine was prosecuted in 2009 on charges of anti-Semitism over Sarkozy jibe.
--> Claiming the Armenian Ottoman conflict is not genocide is a crime in France.
--> Slandering or defaming the Spanish royal family can carry a sentence of up to two years in prison. Two Spanish cartoonists were prosecuted in 2007 for portraying the Royal couple in a sexually explicit posture and their publications pulled from newsstands by the Spanish state.
So there are *red lines* isn’t it?

Talking about Freedom of Expression only in the case of Charlie Hebdo when they published NAKED PICTURES OF THE PROPHET (saw) is pure hypocrisy. This blatant hypocrisy is what pisses Muslim youth.

In the rush to condemn this attack, let us not forget all of Charlie Hebdo's racism, Islamophobia and clear hate incitement against the one man that is dearest to all Muslims.

To point out this constant provocation of the satirical newspaper is not to justify the actions of those who went around doing what they did." (Source: Ryad Ally, Blogger)

The following is a quotation by a Muslim blogger.

"Sky News Arabic quoted: In a step singled out among the rest of the major newspapers in Denmark, Jyllands-Posten Newspaper will not republish the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo's cartoons. The newspaper had sparked a wave of protests in the Muslim world, in which at least 50 people were killed..., when it published cartoons offensive to Islam in 2005. The rest of other Danish newspapers republished the French satirical weekly newspaper's cartoons within their coverage of the attack, which took place in Paris, Wednesday (07/01/2015), on the Office of the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

Comment:

The world was filled with statements denouncing the attack which took place at the headquarters of the French newspaper, and the Western leaders stated that this is a vicious assault against the freedom of expression. French President Francois Hollande had condemned the attack, and said in a speech in front of the headquarters of the newspaper that the attack "touches the heart of the principles of the French Republic, which is the freedom and freedom of expression".

In January of last year, French Interior Minister Manuel Valls, banned a performance by the comic Dieudonne Mbala called "The Wall" on the grounds that it is anti-Semitic, and the French Supreme Court upheld the decision. However, the same court acquitted the novelist Michelle Houellebecq after he called Islam "the dumbest religion" under the pretext of maintaining the freedom of expression!

And so, freedom of expression for them becomes boundless when it comes to attacking Islam, its rites and its holy places, while the exposure of the Jews, even through innuendo, by what offend them, then this is outside the limits of freedom of expression.

Events that indicate the bright truth of the deep-rooted hatred in their hearts against Islam and its people have recurred successively, and those people are not deterred except by an impediment punishment, and perhaps this is the lesson that the Danish newspaper had learned and decided not to publish the French newspaper's cartoons.

It came in the Sahih Hadith:

«ثلاث من كن فيه وجد بهن حلاوة الإيمان: - منها - أن يكون الله ورسوله أحب إليه مما سواهما»

"Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness (delight) of faith - among them - The one to whom Allah and His Messenger becomes dearer than anything else." (Narrated by the two Sheikhs) and his صلى الله عليه وسلم saying:

«لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى أكون أحب إليه من والده وولده والناس أجمعين»

"None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind." (Narrated by Muslim).

The time has come for the world to realize that the Ummah of Islam is alive, will not die, and it sacrifice for its Deen and its Prophet with hearts and lives. It does not know weakness despite all the criminality of the oppressive rulers who are keen on pleasing the capitals of Kufr. And that it is determined to live in dignity and pride of Islam even though the Unbelievers may detest".

Egypt's Grand Mufti Warns Charlie Hebdo Not To Publish 'Racist' Muhammad Cartoon

"CAIRO, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Egypt's Grand Mufti warned the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo on Tuesday against publishing a new caricature of the Prophet Mohammad, saying it was a racist act that would incite hatred and upset Muslims around the world.

Charlie Hebdo is due to publish a front page on Wednesday showing a caricature of the Prophet in its first edition since Islamist gunmen attacked the weekly's offices in Paris last Wednesday, killing 12 people.

"This edition will cause a new wave of hatred in French and Western society in general and what the magazine is doing does not serve coexistence or a dialog between civilisations," the office of Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam, one of the region's most influential Muslim clerics, said in a statement.

"This is an unwarranted provocation against the feelings of ... Muslims around the world."

A total of 17 people were killed in three days of violence that began when the gunmen opened fire at Charlie Hebdo in revenge for its past publication of satirical images of the Prophet. With demand surging for this week's edition, Charlie Hebdo planned to print up to 3 million copies, dwarfing its usual run of 60,000.

The Grand Mufti described the attack on Charlie Hebdo as "terrorist" and Egypt's Al-Azhar, a thousand-year-old seat of religious learning respected by Muslims around the world, has referred to the attack as a criminal act. But they have also been critical of caricatures of the Prophet, which provoked protests when they were first published in 2005.

The Grand Mufti's office called on the French government to reject what he called the "racist act" by Charlie Hebdo, accusing the newspaper of seeking to provoke "religious strife... and deepen hatred."

The front page of the Jan. 14 edition shows Mohammad, a tear on his cheek, holding a sign saying "Je suis Charlie" ("I am Charlie"), below the headline "Tout est pardonne" ("All is forgiven").

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan accused the West on Monday of hypocrisy for its stance over the attack on Charlie Hebdo and the hostage-taking at a kosher supermarket in which four Jews were killed, while failing to condemn anti-Muslim acts in Europe.

"The West's hypocrisy is obvious. As Muslims, we've never taken part in terrorist massacres. Behind these lie racism, hate speech and Islamophobia," he said. A blogger wrote the following piece.

“There is nothing principled about republishing cartoons that grossly insult and offend a minority community that has been singled out by politicians and media for collective punitive treatment. There is nothing brave when newspapers that ordinarily live in fear of libel lawyers target a community.”

“‘Free speech’ is supposed to hold a ‘sacred place’ in Western societies because of the need to account ...those in power and prevent the excesses of the state.”

“What the press call their ‘freedom to insult’ has simply become a tool to bully and persecute a minority community – with a rise in far right and anti-Muslim sentiment across Europe. This collective act of incitement to hate is a reversion to type for an industry that has in the past smeared black people and Jews and Muslims across the world in the colonial past.”

“Anyone who thinks the right to insult others lays the foundations for a socially cohesive society is deluded. Promoting mockery and disrespect through the derision of other members of society simply leads to hatred, division and distrust, even if they tolerate each other at face value.”

“Would any of the liberal media dare to reproduce some of Charlie Hebdo’s racist and bigoted caricatures of black people in the name of free speech?!”

“Of course it is worth remembering that every society has limits to ‘freedom’ – and in Britain, that limit is applied to Muslims who are not free to express political or religious views without being referred to the Channel Project under the Prevent Strategy.”

“Islam has no issues with critique or criticism, but holds no brief for insulting any of the Prophets of God, starting from Prophet Adam, to Prophets Moses and Jesus and Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon them all).

For Muslims, this is a red line issue. This principled approach perhaps explains why historically, Jews fled from Europe to the Muslim world for sanctuary.”

“This juncture in UK politics provides clear evidence that all attempts by the government to get the Muslim community to give up its values have failed . Integration, community cohesion and the Prevent strategy have and will continue to fail.

These failures have now seen a new low, the hurling of insults at the core beliefs of the Muslim community. Nowadays, the Muslim community is being pushed to adopt ‘British values’ – values that cannot deal with minorities without bullying and policing their thoughts.

It is therefore not surprising that the Muslim community rejects them as they have no intellectual substance. The greater the attacks on the noble Prophet, the more the Muslim community will embrace his honour.“

A blogger wrote the following and included the quotation of Umar Al Khattab under it.

"My heart sunk as I heard the headlines. My beloved prophet ridiculed by these Kufaar yet again.
I am exceptionally angry at the silence of the Muslim leaders! They have made their stance very clear on the matter of Our Prophet Our Honour."

The headline below is reprinted verbatim from the BBC. The link to the story is also below. The story itself relates to a new illustration of the Prophet (SAW) after the attack on their office and the resulting reactions to it.

"Charlie Hebdo reaction: 'Why are they doing a picture again of our prophet?"

May Allah reward you brother for the excellent Dua. I would add to what has already been said that it is not about what the Ummah mean to the Prophet (SAW), but what the Prophet means to the Ummah. If the entire universe were to rebel against the Creator, it would not diminish His Power, His Glory, His Majesty, His Sovereignty or His Exaltedness. He does not need us, the human race, to worship Him and accept Him. We need Him. Since the Creator (In Islam, not in other religions) does not appear in Person to the human race, He has Personally-appointed prestigious vice-regents with supreme spiritual authority to act as His Divine Representatives to the human race.

As the Creator is Perfect, it is only logical for Him to appoint only the best of creation to the rest of creation. They are in that respect for Him to judge and not for creation to do so. If that is true about them in terms of their actions, assertions and where applicable their apparent questionable judgements, then that is also true for anything said against their character, personality, ministry and biographical timeframes where they are neither guilty nor worthy of being defamed and viciously assaulted either by the pen or otherwise for whatever reason.

Muhammad Ibn Abdullah; as the seal of representatives and most sacred and holy of emissaries to creation, his message must be preserved and it follows his image, honour and credibility must also be preserved by those to who he was sent, otherwise, we have not fulfilled our responsibilities to the Creator or to the Messenger of Allah. Since the Prophet's death, that role has been entrusted to those whom he delegated responsibility. If we are to be true to that responsibility, we cannot allow ourselves or anyone else to show disrespectfulness to the one who we see as our first and foremost patriarch, our most revered leader, our highest model of humanity, benchmark of goodness and all that is pure in addition to being our greatest hero of all time.

PAKISTAN: Je ne suis pas Charlie, je suis Kouachi
Publication time: 19 January 2015, 19:02
19896_1.jpg
"According to The New Daily, mass demonstrations of many thousands of Muslims in support of two French brothers Kouachi, who killed 12 Charlists for insulting the Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, were held across Pakistan on Sunday. Unlike France, with its "human rights", in Pakistan it is not prohibited to express their attitude to similar events.

Demonstrators held following posters that read:

- We hate France because it allows their people to play Muslims.

Muslims were carrying banners and icons “Je suis Kuachi”, “I’m Kuashi” (a photo, according to Charlist French law, is not prohibited, as it was taken from the Jewish newspaper in occupied Palestine, so it is quite "kosher" to look at it) modelled from the posters “Je suis Charlie”, that the French government made mandatory to wear for every well-intentioned Frenchman.

Protests against French Charlists were held in all cities of Pakistan, particularly in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Quetta, Peshawar, Multn and many, many others.

Demonstrators burned French flags, effigies of red Prime Minister Hollande and draftsmen from weekly of Parisian perverts.

Christians held separate demonstrations and similar protests against the blasphemous France.

In Karachi, a delegation of Pakistani political parties visited the French Consul-General's residence and handed him a requirement of Pakistanis to close the magazine of militant atheists for spreading religious hatred throughout the world.

In Lahore, more than 6,000 participants of the rally demanded from Islamabad regime broke off diplomatic relations with France.

In Quetta demonstrators trampled the French flag, and then burned it together with effigies and portraits of President Hollande and Parisian draftsmen (see the photo of burning down of an effigy of a draftsman).

More than a hundred local Christians organised a separate demonstration against the godless French at their church in Peshawar. "Death to Charlie Hebdo, death to the blasphemer of Prophet Muhammad" (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him - KC), chanted Pakistani Christians. They also burned the French flag.

In Islamabad, 2,000 demonstrators gathered in front of the National Press Club and burned effigies of the draftsmen.

In the southern city of Multan, demonstrators chanted: "We are not Charlie, we are Kouachi!”, in solidarity with the brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi. "

“The most severely punished people on the Day of Resurrection would be the image-makers.” [Bukhari & Muslim]

Every image-maker will be in the fire of Hell. A soul will be made for him for every image which he has made and it will punish him in the Hell-fire. [Muslim]

Comment: I placed these narrations here from the Prophet (SAW) on this thread instead of the Hadith section because it should illustrate what all Muslims should think of cartoonists (who draw living things) in general.

What then is the judicial decision upon those responsible for illustrations of the Prophet (SAW) on the Day of Resurrection including those particular magazine artists from Charlie Hebdo who were killed.
