inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji un is a cure for your oppressed heart, terrified soul, and longed breaths.
When a Muslim loses one of his beloved persons, his heart will be as you get it out from his chest, Allah knows, and he listens even to your disturbed heartbeats.
Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi rajioon is a sentence of a sincere Muslim, who knows that all of us will return to Allah, and we asked him for a beautiful return, all world calamities are not equal to Allah’s satisfaction.
Inna lillahi wa Inna ilaihi rajiun keeps our souls protected from Satan’s domination and whispers, it’s a reminder to your broken heart we will return to Allah, don’t panic, all life’s afflictions will be forgotten in Heaven.
“ When the son of a servant dies, Allah asks His angels, did you take the son of our servant, they answer yes, and He asks Again did you take the fruit of his heart, they answer yes.
Allah asks what did he do, the servant after his son’s death, the angels answer praise and said Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
Then Allah said, build for my servant a house in paradise and call it the house of the praise.
The scholars said the terminal meaning of Inna lillahi wa inallah rajioon is divided into two meanings, and they are:
He lends you all you have, and when he returns them back, he takes what he possessed from the beginning.
Inna: that means all of us, all creatures
Lillahi: it consisted of preposition and the name of Allah, which means to Allah that we belong to our Lord, he is the Owner of Sovereignty.
wa inna: and we are, that’s the second time, to affirm the meaning in our souls and minds, that we are servants of the almighty lord, we believe that we don’t possess anything in ourselves.
Ilayhi rajioon: we will return to him, he is the first and the last, he is the initiator who initiates us from nothing, and he is the restorer who will restore us to the first state of” nothing” again.
inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji un means that We belong to God and indeed, to Him, we will return, we are satisfied, and we strive to please Allah.
“If any Muslim who suffers some calamity says what God has commanded him, ‘We belong to God and to Him do we return; O God, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange for it,’ God will give him something better than it in exchange.”
When she lost her husband, Abou Salama, she asked the beloved prophet who would be better than abou Salama, and the answer was that she was married to the best of all mankind, the prophet PBUH.
The meaning of this dua doesn’t mean that we will forget the beloved one or want to forget, but its importance is in our deep belief in Allah that he will relieve our pain.
Our Lord’s treasuries are full, all your life affairs are between his hand, he can change your condition to a better one, and replace your loss, pain, and shortage with tranquility, strength, and sufficiency.
إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون
it represents a complete submission of Muslims to Allah, and complete satisfaction with his actions over his creatures.
We are his own servants, and he is the creator of all powers, all the universe was nothingness, and all the universe will return to the first state that day Allah will say.” To whom belongs the dominion today, to God is the One, the Omnipotent” Ghafer verse 16.
There is no problem with saying inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji un or any other Dua translated into English or any other language, but it’s not permissible during the prayer, and anyway it’s preferable to learn the Arabic Language.
“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger, and a loss of wealth, lives, and fruits, and give good tidings to the patient (155) who, when calamity befalls them, say: We belong to God and to Him we shall return (156)”
” ولنبلونكم بشيء من الخوف والجوع ونقص من الأموال والأنفس والثمرات وبشر الصابرين (155) الذين إذا أصابتهم مصيبة قالوا إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون (156) “
inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji un, is a sign of a complete submission, although your heart is torn, you only says what is pleasing your Lord.

So, you could reply to him by praying for him and for the dead one.
Now we will mention some occasions that we should say Inna lillahi wa Inna ilaihi rajiun in:

But the greatest calamity that could happen to Muslims is the calamity in our religion, not only for you but for seeing other Muslims fall in sins and are far away from what Allah commanded us to do. We will say on this occasion with fully broken hearts, Inna lillahi wa Inna ilaihi rajiun.
Our beloved prophet PBUH supplicated to Allah and said “ and don’t make our calamity in our religion” Amen.
