3 or 4 names

Hope that someone can help me with a question on naming children in Islam. Is it correct to have 3 or 4 names making up your full name such as -

Mohamed Fardan Hamidon

or

Zainab Manal Imran Hamidon (In this case Imran Hamidon being the father's name)

Also, one more thing. What fatwas if any have been passed on determining the sex of a baby through ultrasound ?

well about ur first question, i dont see any problem according to using 3 or 4 names, it s all about a choice, as we can see that people re using the same in gulf countries. there s also some sahabah that using 3 or 4names as well.

i have no idea about the second question.

Brother, Islam did not come with so much restrictions. We to follow the good and avoid the evil. Having 3 or 4 names are ok given that the meanings of names are not bad. But I just suggest that you should name the child with one given name. If child is male then you can add "Muhammad" at the start of his name, such as:

Muhammad Imran, Muhammad Umer, Muhammad Usman.

While you should not name children with direct names of Allah, such as:
Rahmaan, Raheem and Razaq should not be sued alone but they should be:
AbdurRahman, AbdurRaheem and AbdurRazaq.


For girls, you can have one or two names, but 3 or 4 names will just make the life difficult at many occassions. You fill any form and your half life is passed in writing your long long name. If you have short name then you can do it quickly, also people are not puzzled by your multiple names.

The ultrasound can fail to tell gender, but as a general rule, no midwife will tell the gender, unless they are 100% sure, if they have an inch of doubt, they will not tell. But still, they can, potentially be wrong, but usually its ok. I had three, and none was wrong hehe.

With 3D ultrasound, one is sure, from around week 14 of gestation. Because its 3D. In 2D its easiest to see from week 17 and onwards, girls easier to detect than boys, girls are two lines, boys are one.

Thanks for your input guys. Umm, thanks for the link. My wife and I were unsure if we should find out about the sex of our baby.

I agree that the lesser names that we have, the easier it is for all practical purposes. I do know that the father's name is a must though.

There are practical purposes of knowing the gender, but by all means, one can live without knowing hehe...
