At Least 40 Civilians Killed as US Strikes Afghan Wedding Party

Afghan officials and local residents say that a US air strike struck an Afghan wedding party on Monday, killing at least 40 civilians and wounding 28 others (including the bride). The strike occurred in the Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar Province. Reporters on the scene say that villagers are still search the debris for survivors, and the toll is expected to rise even further.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai warned that bombings were not the way to win the war on terrorism, and said he hoped President-elect Obama would make it a priority to stop killing Afghan civilians. US spokesman Commander Jeff Bender said an investigation is ongoing, and “if innocent people were killed in this operation, we apologize and express our condolences.”

This is the largest incident of US-inflicted civilian casualties in Afghanistan in over two months. In late August, a US air strike in Herat Province killed 90 civilians and led to an increase in tensions between the Afghan government and the international forces.

The Herat strike was based on a false tip, according to the Afghan government. This strike came after US-led troops came under fire in the hilly area, but it is not as of yet clear why the wedding party ended up being the target of the air strike.

Brothers & sisters don't let this democratic patriotism distract us from what they are doing to the innocent Muslim world. How many more innocent people will they kill? How many excuses do they have? It seems like if you don't accept "democracy" the U.S. will bomb your country.

I read this at work today and felt a horrible cringe. Those people were bombed in wedding parties and I sat there chasing pennies. This story did not make the headlines any where. Imagine if a Muslim bombed 40 non-Muslims in a wedding party ... it would have been all over the place with minute details about how his belief led to this.

There has been quite a few incident of bombing wedding parties by the coalition in Afghanistan. They seem to bomb any gathering of 10 people or more whenever they spot it. I bet you it is another 1,000 kg "precision" bomb.

May Allah have mercy on those who martyred and avenge the innocents. No right is wasted with Allah. We are all going to die and the lucky ones are those who have their best deeds last.

Actually brother I just saw it on BBC World News right now. They explained that the attack was on a wedding party.

I don't feel angry or upset about this. Rather, it is from the Mercy of Allah Ta Alla. Mashallah now the married brother and sister are amongst the Shuhadah in Jannah, and they will rejoice in the Reward that their Lord has bestowed upon them, and they shall not have any fear, nor shall they ever greive.

And Allah Ta Alla is full of Mercy.

Akhi `Abdul-Hasib, may Allaah bless you, please remember that ahl us-Sunnah are united on the fact that we do not declare anyone to be from the people of jannah or jahannam, and labelling people as shuhadaa' when you don't know of their condition is clearly in contrast to this belief... We hope that they are from the people of Paradise, but saying that they are, without specific proof goes against the sunnah.
