Islam-intrigue

Hello. Islam intrigues me; hence my name. I've seen a bad portrayal of your religion in the media and to be honest thats made me fearful of muslims in general, i'm scared of what reaction might be provoked if i say anything anti-allah or that degrades your religion. I've read a few topics on this site and it would seem to the contrary, that Islam does involve peace and gentleness. However i have also seen some of the Quran extracts which talks about muslims not being allowed to befriend christians and that the west are all infedels etc. For these reasons i would like to know more about the quran and the contexts by which these things were said or rather, how they are interpreted. There are a number of passages below that appear to evoke hatred.
"...slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush..." Sura 9:5
"...O Prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites! Be harsh with them..." Sura 9:73
"The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom;" Sura 5:33
"O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk." Sura 5:51
And what about where it says in the Hadith "Jihad in the way of allah" as a way for paradise.
Sorry, if in my naivety, i have miss-interpreted these passages. But to me, as i said above, they don't suggest peace, but segregation from non-believers and hatred.
So i wonder whether love is actually commanded in the quaran?
For these reasons, i would like read and get to know the quran better, so could someone link me to a good site with an english version of the quran?
I also have a few questions. Would anyone mind sharing with me any personal revelations they have had that confirms their belief in allah. Perhaps miracle healings or anything that confirms your beliefs.
Just to note, this is a sincere post to understand why you believe in allah and what you interpret from the quran's scripture. Thank you in advance for not being hostile and for answering my questions.
