A Spiders House

Salaamalikum,

The other day I was outside my house I was keen enough to notice a spiders web. I saw something in that web that made me contemplate like never before. I saw a fly stuck in the web and the spider came and wrapped it up with it's thread.

If one realises that he/she ought to think about this creature which is normally of no importance to anyone, one can see new doors being opened for him/her. This tiny insect he/she sees before him/her is a miracle of design. There is perfect symmetry in the web the spider has woven. If, by any chance, he/she wonders how a tiny spider could achieve such astonishingly perfect design, and if he/she makes quick research, he/she will encounter some other extraordinary facts: the thread a spider uses is thirty percent more flexible than a rubber thread of the same thickness. The thread the spider produces is of such a superior quality that men use it as a model for the manufacture of bullet-proof vests.

"The parable of those who take protectors other than Allah is that of the Spider, who builds (to itself) a house; but truly the flimsiest of houses is the Spider's house; if they but knew" (29:41)

The spider’s house, from the physical point of view, is the weakest house of all, because it is made out of a number of very delicate silk threads. These threads are interwoven, leaving large separating spaces at most times. Therefore, they do not protect from the heat of the sun, or the extreme cold. These threads do not form adequate shade, nor protect from the rain, storming winds, or the dangers of attackers.

The verse indicates that the female spider is the one mainly undertaking the building of the house. Accordingly, building the spider's house is an assignment carried on by the female spiders. It is the female which has in its body the glands for secretion of the silk substance from which the spider’s house is made.

The Quran is very strict and clear when saying that the weakness is in the spider’s house and not the threads; (the flimsiest or fragilest of houses).

the spider's house is the flimsiest house, whether physically or spiritually. This has been proven by the late studies in zoology. In other words, the Quran preceded the modern scientific findings by more than 1300 years.

The threads of the spider's house are made of very delicate silk. The thickness of one thread is usually one million of the squared inch, or one part of four thousand parts of the thickness of the ordinary human hair. Despite its delicacy, it is the strongest biological substance known to mankind so far. The silk threads which make up the spider’s web are considered stronger than steel, and their strength is surpassed only by the melted quartz. The thin thread stretches to five times its length before it is cut. Therefore, the scientists call it “biological steel” or “bio-steel”. It is twenty times stronger than the ordinary metal steel. Its tolerance measures 300,000 pound for the square inch. Hypothetically speaking, should there be a thick rope of the spider’s threads, in the size of the thumb, it can easily carry a "jumbo" jet.

In addition, the spider’s house, spiritually speaking, is the flimsiest of all houses, because it is deprived of all love and kindness, which are the pillars of any happy home. The female kills the male as soon as the fertilization takes place. Being larger in size and more violent, the female kills the male and eats its body. Also, the female eats its youngsters mercilessly. In some types, the female dies after fertilizing its eggs, which are usually fostered in a silk bag. When the eggs hatch, spider lings come out to find themselves in a very crowded place inside the eggs bag. The siblings then start to fight for food, space or both. The brother kills its brother and sister, and the sister kills its sister and brother, until the fight ends with a few spider lings remaining. These spider lings shed their skin and tear the eggs bag to come out one after the other with unhappy memories. They all then spread in the surrounding environment. Each female starts to build its house. On the road to achieve this goal, some of the spider lings die, whereas those who survive repeat the same tragedy. This makes the spider’s house the most violent and ruthless house, lacking all forms of kinship. Hence, Allah the Almighty sets it as a parable in its weakness and frailty because it lacks the simplest form of kindness between the husband and wife, the mother and her children, the brother and his siblings, and the sister and her siblings.

These facts were unknown to any human at the time of revelation, and for long centuries thereafter. They have been discovered after extensive studies of the behavior of the spider by hundreds of scientists, for tens of years, until they were realized in the last decades of the twentieth century. That is why Allah ended the noble verse with His saying "if they but knew".

Some deep meaning of the verse:

A- The house of the spider is not merely its dwelling place. Being the sticky net it is, it constitutes a trap for flying insects such as flies and others. These insects are a prey on which the spider feeds. Similarly, those idolaters who revere gods besides Allah, and call people to those revered gods, are in fact calling them to an artful trap which leads them to their death and destruction in this life and the afterlife.

B- Warning against those with corrupt invocations who revere others besides Allah, whether money or whim. This warning is issued through indicating their hidden strings with which they hunt their victims. These strings can be money, sex, power, or any other hidden string which destroys the victim once it is trapped.

The verse indicates that the female spider is the one mainly undertaking the building of the house. Accordingly, building the spider's house is an assignment carried on by the female spiders. It is the female which has in its body the glands for secretion of the silk substance from which the spider’s house is made.

This makes me ponder - the Queen bee is also given the assignment to be the builder of it's house as well as many others if we really think; could it possibly be that the Muslim women is also given this assignment of the home! Truly my Lord is Most Knowledgeable.

I've ordered Harun Yahya DVDS from Islam Channel (UK). Therefore, I've watched exactly what you trying to say, and that really amazed me, and couldnt stop saying Subhanallah. If you really like this subject I advice you to watch those DVDs you'll find them very interesting inshallah. The DVDs include subjects based on spiders, bees, fish (Salamon) Yaum Al-Qeyamah, ect.....

Wassalam Alykom..

Salaam,

The spider is mentioned in three verses in the Bible (all are in the Old Testament and never mentioned in the New Testament). The spider is mentioned in one verse in the Quran.

1) "Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise:Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer; Coneys are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags;locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks. A spider can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings' palaces" (Proverbs 30:24-28)

However, there are thousands of creatures that are smaller than the Ants, Coneys, locusts and a spider and are wise also as for examples the microbes, protozoa and fungi.

I am not sure why the spider is found in the kings' palaces specifically.

2) "They hatch the eggs of vipers and spin a spider's web. Whoever eats their eggs will die, and when one is broken, an adder is hatched. Their cobwebs are useless for clothing; they cannot cover themselves with what they make. Their deeds are evil deeds, and acts of violence are in their hands" (Isaiah 59:5-6)

Isaiah describes the wicked as those which "weave the spider's web" i.e., their works and designs are, like the spider's web, vain and useless.

Scientifically speaking, it is said that you will not die eating a Vipers egg or even the Viper.

3) "What he trusts in is fragile; what he relies on is a spider's web" (Job 8:14)

In this verse, the trust of the hypocrite is compared to the spider's web or house. This meaning is a beautiful one.

In summary:

The Bible says :1) Four things on earth are small, Ants, Coneys, locusts and a spider, 2) Locusts have no king, 3) The spider is found in kings' palaces and 4) Whoever eats the eggs of vipers will die.

The Quran says 1) The female spider is the one mainly undertaking the building of the house,2) The spider’s house, from the physical and spiritual point of view, is the weakest house of all and 3)The weakness is in the spider’s house and not the threads

It is obvious that the Quran is quite different & much deeper than what the Bible has said. It is also very clear that the Quran preceded the sciences in many aspects.

Fabrication of the word Spider in the Bible

I just wanted to point out that there are even some discrepancies within each Bible. The word spider has been altered to lizard. This discrepancy can be found in Proverb 30:28.

Here are a few versions that contain the word spider:

King James Version (Proverbs 30:28):

The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs 30:28;&version=9;

New King James Version (Proverbs 30:28):

The spider skillfully grasps with its hands, And it is in kings’ palaces.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs 30:28;&version=50;

Young's Literal Translation (Proverbs 30:28):

A spider with two hands taketh hold, And is in the palaces of a king.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs 30:28;&version=15;

Here are a few versions that contain the word Lizard:

New Internation Version (Proverbs 30:28):

A lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings' palaces.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs 30:28;&version=31;

New American Standard Bible (Proverbs 30:28):

The lizard you may grasp with the hands,Yet it is in kings' palaces.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs 30:28;&version=49;

Amplified Bible (Proverbs 30:28):

The lizard you can seize with your hands, yet it is in kings' palaces.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs 30:28;&version=45;

Even though it is just one word, it sure does make a difference. This is just one of the many evidences of forgery in the Bible.

Hi HumbleWun,

Fascinating post. Loved it. It really got me thinking, and I agreed with all your observations. 5 stars.

I was very intrigued when I came across this passage in the Quran, and I had pondered upon the meaning of this, and I found your explanation very insightful - I really feel I have been enlightened with this. Thank you.

It is said by psychologists, that the reason that human beings are usually afraid of creatures such as snakes and spiders, is the lack of anthropomorphic features - they do not at all resemble us, as so many other creatures do, and we were created in God's most perfect form, and so these creatures are symbolic of Satan, no wonder then that we are naturally adverse to them.

Between the snake and the spider, the spider is the creature that resembles us the least, as even snakes have faces, a head, two eyes, and nostrils to which we can relate, spiders do not even have this.

We can relate to the snake only for it's head, and the head is where our wisdom and intelligence are contained, and so the head symbolises these things. As such, the snake is symbolic of evil which is intelligent and wise, it is cunning and trickery, whereas the spider, not even having a head, is symbolic of that evil which is completely mindless. Therefore, between the snake and the spider, at least the snake symbolises the evil which it is possible to revert, for we can appeal to it's intelligence, whereas the spider, we cannot even make any rational appeal to the evil which she symbolises.

This had me thinking that there are two kinds of evil, the evil which can be made good, and evil which is beyond all hope. The Quran suggests in numerous places that there is such a thing as people for whom there is simply no hope of reverting - these are the spiders amongst us - I myself, was a snake.

Before I learned about Islam, I was very deeply into paganistic ideas, and one of the notions I held very strongly is that I was very much aligned with the spirit of Serpent, I regarded the serpent to be my 'totem', or 'spirit guide'.

However, like I said, at least serpents have a head. Evil they may represent, but we can at least appeal to the rational intelligence of the nature of evil that the serpent symbolises - and so I am an example of that.

Before I ever even looked into Islam, and being arachnophobic, I always thought that spiders were surely the most perfect symbol of evil that we encounter. There may be many other creatures which seem to completely lack similarity to the human form, such as worms, or jellyfish for example, but these are things that get on with their lives and mind their own business. Spiders, on the other hand, intrude in our homes, they come to sap the moisture from our tongues at night and nestle upon us for warmth under the bedclothes. Spiders are the best symbol of Satanism in the world.

I am not trying to suggest that spiders are inherently evil souls, they are special servants of Allah in what they represent to us and show us about the nature of evil.

Just my current thoughts.

I will never kill a spider again, there is already a whole host of them waiting to bear witness against me when it is time for Reckoning, and there is little I can do about that now, other than to try and make sure I can be forgiven.

Salaam brother Inquirer,

I'm glad you found this fascinating. I enjoyed reading your thoughts as well. Your analogy of the snake/spider were good analysis. May Allah swt continue to increase your knowledge and shower his blessings upon you.

Even the life of the prophet Muhammad, (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), were saved by a spider's web.

When the Prophet (pbuh) and his companion were traveling to Madina, they took shelter in the Cave of Thawr because the Quraish were out to kill them. While they were in the cave, spiders spun webs across the entrance. When the polytheists came upon the cave, they were fooled into thinking that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) were not in the cave because they would have broken the spider's web going in.

As the Spider is such a small insect but is clever in construction techniques, saved the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from being captured and possible death. Allah swt used one of His tiniest creatures as a power to confuse those Quraish killers. Truly, Allah is Most Wise & Most Powerful.

Al-Imaam Muhammad Naasirud-Deen Al-Albaanee (Rahimahu ‘Llah) said:
“…Something must be said here about what has been mentioned in some books of Hadeeth, and in books of Seerah as well, that the disbelievers of Quraysh, after having tracked their fugitives to the cave, saw that a dove had made its nest at the entrance of the cave, and a spider had spun a web there as well, so they allegedly said, "It is not possible for anyone to be in this cave," and then departed.
This is not authentic. As for the chain of this hadeeth, it is not authentic. Furthermore there is a strong, authentic narration stating that Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, ordered an angel to spread his wings over the cave's entrance, and thus they did not see them….”
