A witr question

Salaam,

I've heard you can pray 1 rakat witr following Isha prayer. There's also 2 rakats of prayer before witr known as As Shaf. My question is, so is As Shaf always joined with Witr, or can Only 1 Witr Rakat be prayed following Isha (without As Shaf)?

Jazakallah khair.

wa'alaikumussalam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh respected sister

If you are referring to other months than Ramadan, then yes you can pray Witr after Isha. If you are referring to Ramdan, it is recommended to Pray Taraweeh after Isha, before Witr.

Also kindly note that in all the periods of the year, Witr is to be done as the last Prayer.

Considering As-Shaf, here you have to know the numbers of Rak'ahs you do in Witr. Witr's short way is 1 Rak'ah, mid way is 3 Rak'ahs and long way is 11 Rak'ahs.

You see everything is odd there, as Witr means Odd. You may do one Rak'ah as Witr also. If you do 3, you can do 2 Rak'ahs+ 1 Rak'ah, or you can do all 3 Rak'ah at once and give Salaam.

In case of 11 Rak'ah also, you can do 2 units by 2 units until you make 10 and end with an extra one Rak'ah. That's all.

Hope it helps a little. :)

I was asking in general, not just in Ramadan. I was confused as I wasn't sure if 1 witr can be read by itself, or if it always has to be read with 2 rakats of As-Shaf.
