I am wondering if someone can give me some Islamic based information regarding the adoption/fostering/permanent caring-for of ABANDONED babies (as in, those babies who are foundlings and there is no knowledge of the birth parent names)? Please do not just give all the info against the "modern" adoption practices - I am talking about the practical practices - as in, how it would actually work these days with the need for a legal person to sign for a child for education, health care, etc.
I know that even in these cases the that "adoptive" parents cannot give the "father's" last name, because it would confuse the lineage, but can an abandoned baby be given the family name of the "adoptive" mother?
I am using the word "adoptive" because I am talking about a permanent placement of a child with a family to care for them, regardless of the specific definition of adoption or how it is interpreted in different societies and cultures.
Again, I would only like information regarding the care and upbringing of ABANDONED babies - I have tons of information regarding adoption in general in Islam, but have not found much info with regard to abandoned babies. In Kuwait, it is about once every week or so that there is a report of an abandoned baby being found, and my husband and I are considering the possibility of "adopting" a foundling in the future - but I know myself; if I am to care for a child like it is my own, I am going to actually think of it as my own (although I know I would let the child know it was "adopted" of course, but I would still be "mommy").
