as you know when the prophet, PBUH, received revelation it was very taxing on society, as the meaning of these blessed ayat, were as if you were studying for the biggest exam. That exam was meeting heaven or placed in hell. As for the sahaba, ra they took extra care to follow the prophet, PBUH, in every way.

now sleep in Arabic language has many names. The most you hear today is النوم the sleep. But Arabic has other names which describe the time and type of sleep too. You may have already read this in hadith studies.

here is a list of some other names:

  • النعاس feeling sleepy ( an nuaas )
  • الوسن start feeling a heaviness in the head ( al wasan )
  • الكرى the state of being half asleep ( al kara )
  • التغفيق being asleep but can hear around you ( al taghfeeq )
  • الإغفاء light sleep, like taking a nap. ( al eghfaa )
  • التهويم sleeping for a short period of time ( al tahweem )
  • الرقاد sleeping for a long period of time ( al ruqad )
there are also names for (sleeping) according to the time of sleeping like:
  • الغيلولة sleeping between Al Fajr prayer and sunrise ( al ghayloolah )
  • الفيلولة sleeping after Al Asr prayer till Al Magrib- ( al fayloolah)
  • القيلولة sleeping after Al Zuhr Prayer but getting up before Al Asr prayer, and it is better to be as short as possible ( al qayloolah)
the prophet SAW mentioned القيلولة , he SAW said قيلوا فإن الشياطين لا تقيل , take a ( القيلولة ) because shaytan don't take it.

Here is a link at islamQA that discusses the way the prophet, PBUH, carried his day somewhat and with respects to sleep.http://www.islamqa.com/en/ref/2063/sleep

between asr and maghrib nap discouraged: the hadith is weak according to sheik manajjid, hiftha Allah.
