Fennel helps weight loss and is an effective treatment for upper respiratory infections, indigestion, spasms and morning sickness.

Habitat:

Fennel is found in the Mediterranean, southwestern Asia and the temperate regions of Europe.

Description:

Fennel is a hardy, perennial, umbelliferous herb, with yellow flowers and feathery leaves.

It resembles dill and can cross-pollinate with it.

Part Used Medicinally:

Fruits (misnamed as seeds), leaves, roots.

Constituents:

Fennel contains an excellent quantity of iron, dietary fiber, potassium, manganese and vitamins.

It is a good source of niacin as well as phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, molybdenum and copper.

Its essential oil contains anethole, limonene, fenchone, estragole (methyl-chavicol), safrole, alpha-pinene, camphene, beta-pinene, beta-myrcene and p-cymene.

Medicinal Uses:

Fennel helps treat indigestion, heartburn, flatulence and mild spasms of the gastrointestinal tract.

Combining equal amounts of caraway and fennel provides an effective carminative tea mixture.

Fennel tea is useful in treating infantile dyspepsia, diarrhea and colic.
Fennel has mild narcotic properties and is a good remedy for migraines and dizziness.

It is an effective treatment for morning sickness and helps reduce post chemotherapy and radiation nausea and vomiting.

Fennel's high vitamin C content provides the herb with antioxidant effects good for fighting free radicals.

It promotes weight loss and improves metabolism.

Fennel helps lower high blood pressure, and prevents strokes and heart attacks.

Caution:

Although fennel is not an allergen, individuals allergic to celery and other vegetables should consult a physician before using it.

As fennel may increase the risk of seizures, epileptic individuals should refrain from using it.
