So, I recently was convinced (from a really long and awesome post on this site, alhamdulillahi) that music is indeed quite haraam. I've stopped listening to music and am wondering about something. I know we should listen to Qur'an instead of music, but is it okay to use Qur'an for background noise? I generally used music as background noise:astag:, but since it's haraam I've totally left off listening to it which makes concentrating on homework harder.

I don't want to be a hypocrite when saying this because I listen to the Qur'an when driving and sometimes focus more on driving than the recitation (for obvious reasons) and then feel guilty about it. But, my take is when the Qur'an is playing it should be listened to and not treated as "backgroudn noise". It is the Word of Allah and she be treated with the upmost respect. When one is listening to it, they should reflect upon what they are listening to, and this is harder to do or even neglected when treating Qur'an as "background noise" and the like.

    Yeah...

I definitely understand what you're saying and that's about how I understood it myself. Would it be best to just deal with the silence then or is there some halal alternative? I'm sure given time Allah would make it easier anyway :inshallah:, I'm just curious.

I would suggest you not listen to the Quran as backup noise. Like another post said it must be treated with respect. In that same sense it is mustahabb to listen to Quran and one part of listening to something is to focus on it. To receive hasanah for hearing that recitation you must focus on what you are listening to and if you do not it is as if you did not listen. Inshallah that helps you.

1.You can try to listen to nasheeds but you have to be careful because in some nasheeds musical instruments are played. So if you choose to listen to nasheeds listen to only those without music.

2.Or you can listen to islamic lectures, I try to do this when i am doing chores. Give it a try and see if it helps you concentrate in your homework.

    background noise?????

    Salaam Alaikom,

How can you even think of using the Qu'ran for background noise? May Allah forgive for such a terrible thought, INSHALLAH!

    Salam,

Not sure what is the view of the scholars concerning the issue. But, I put the entire Quran and several other surahs by different Imam's into my ipod. So I listen to it when I drive, sometimes when I'm relaxing and doing homework. I love hearing the Quran being recited, it really gladdens the heart and tranquility descends upon my mind.

I also listen to nasheeds, but most of the time I listen to the Quran.

    Wasalam

    Very interesting... and confusing.

Thanks for all of your input. My understanding of the whole situation is that even nasheeds would be haraam since men singing is effeminate and listening to women sing is immodest. My question is, are nasheeds with no musical instruments still haraam?

Sister "background noise" is a figure of speech for lack of a better term. I'm asking questions trying to figure something out about our deen and responses like that don't really help. To Allah is our return, I don't need to be scolded for being curious.:jazaak:

assalamualaikum. Before declaring a thing to be 'haram' ,we hav to search in Allah's book as well as 'hadeeth'. The main aim of stating it haram by the scholars may be because music diverts man from the thoughts of Allah . So everything which hinders man from this should be abandoned. Muslim ummah should stand in middle way. we should not be in extremes. In madeena children sang in the presnce of prophet. He did not prohibit it. I am not talking abt the noisy music of today.that is extreme. But r we not allowed to enjoy it if it is a very modest and within the limits of 'deen'? or is totally haram and be always silent? a good muslim knows hw to select wht is good and bad in islam.
