Anyone into medicine...?

Assalamualaikum,

I'm new (kinda) here but I saw this part of the TTI forum and was wondering if anyone here is interested in medicine or is already studying it. Thhe reason for my request is because I am still in school currently doing my GCSE's but I'm really unsure of what my future career should be. I've always wanted to work in the medical field, but mainly as a doctor. However, I have been having doubts about this as I don't know what to study if I do how long it takes, etc. I'd really, really appreciate it if someone could tell me a bit about the qualifications, etc.

Jazakallah in advanced!

Hi there. Medicine is a noble proffesion. I don't do it, so I don't know a lot about it. But I can tell you, from my friend who does do it:
- it takes around 6 yrs for a basic medical degree, more if you want to be a specialist or surgeon
- University places in the UK are noteriously hard to get. Do your research now. Do some work exp, and make some contacts in the proffesion
- Do at least 4 AS levels, and at least 3 full A2. Don't do vocational based stuff e.g media studies, business. Some uni's also ask you to have biology and chemistry A-Level. More research for you to do!

Why don't you try TheStudentRoom.com or more subject specific info?
Its also good for other GCSE help.

Hope this helps

salam alykum,
Medicine is a very interesting field and very dynamic as well, if you are hardworking and dedicated, you will find something you will love doing.
I'm not sure about the UK but here in the US, medical school is 4 years after getting an undergraduate degree(bachelors, which is 4 years as well). After medical school, you then do a residency in a speciality that you want to practice, the lengh of residency varies depending on the specialty, the longest one i belive is neurosugery which is 6years
