Boycotting pro-Zionist Companies

Bismillahi wa salaatu wa salaamu alaa rasulillah

Alhamdulillah, we were very fortunate to have Shaykh Saalim at-Taweel spend five days here in California. In that time he went over the importance of following the Sunnah, sinning and what are the excuses that lift the blame of the sin, what wipes away the sin, the importance of istighfar, the hadeeth of forbidding oppression from hadeeth #24 of Arbaeen an-Nawawi, plus questions and answers. From one of the more beneficial answers was the Shaykhs nearly 50 minute answer to the question on boycotting. Here is an excerpt of the detailed answer as translated by Abu Muhammad al-Maghribi (he was the translator for the Shaykh during his visit):

Question: Some of the companies, for example that support the Zionists and their like, such as McDonalds and other big companies that supposedly support the Israeli state and so forth, should we boycott them?

Answer: The answer, yes you can eat from them. Allah did not put it upon us that when we buy something from a person that we ask him, What are you going to do with this money?"

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to deal with the Jews and they used to deal in ribaa and suht (evil). And they even tried to kill the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). And they poisoned his food. They were his enemies, but with all this, he didn't boycott dealings with them. Boycotting in these things has no basis in Islaam. They put a hardship on the people. We shouldnt worry about going to a restaurant and what they are going to do with the money we give them. You just make sure that what you buy is halaal and the money that you use is halaal. What that person does with the money is not up to you.

If you say that you want to make sure of what he does with the money. Now, the one who gives the money, he has to ask, What are you going to do with it? And that one has to ask the one after him, What are you going to do with it? Then the other one will give the money to someone else and hed have to ask, What are you going to do with it? And this will go on up till Yaumul Qiyaamah. (laughter from the gathering).

Or do we ask (if we are the seller), All of this money: where did you get it from? (Lets say) I have a car to sell. One person, he came to buy the car and I ask him, From where did you get this money? And the one who gave it to you, where did he get the money? And the one who gave it to the one who gave it to the first one, who gave it to him? until Aadam alayhi salaam (laughter from the gathering). Allah said he did not place upon you any haraj (hardship) in the deen. Just take what Allah has made lawful for you and stay away from what Allah has made unlawful.

Many people spoke about boycotting and they make it difficult on the people: dont eat cheese, dont drink milk, and Allah didnt command this. And we are in no need of this. Even the people who call people to boycott, they themselves are not truthful to that which they call people to. They dont even boycott. He boycotts the milk, then he doesnt do it another day. Its not like they (those not true to their boycott) are going to die if they dont eat the cheese and milk.

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), at the end of his life, bought some barley from a Jew so that his family could eat. He is the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he is the ruler over a large land, he had companions that, if he asked for their lives they would give it. With all of this, he accrued a debt to get barley from a Jew. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) didnt have money. So he put up his shield that he used in battle as collateral. It is well known that if you put up something like that as collateral, if you dont pay, you lose it. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) died and his shield was still with the Jew. This narration proved that until his last days he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) still dealt with the Jews.

He didnt say, This shield, the Jews will take it and get strong with it and fight the Muslims. Well never end if we think like this and make it difficult for the people. This is strange and it is not supported with any proof from the Quran and Sunnah.

I read something from one of the famous people--hes deviant in his manhaj, Im not going to mention his name—he said everyone buys something from the kuffaar with a dinar or dollar or qirsh or rubiyyah, the kaafir will take it and get strong and use it to kill the Muslims. The Muslims need to get certain things from the kuffaar: plane, cars, , medicine. So actually with this decision you will make the Muslims weaker. Dont buy from them? To deal with them is one thing, but to show allegiance to them is something else. The prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) died and his shield was still with a Jew.

Masha Allah. Very good answer chechenMaga. One of the Malaysian Islamic political party once commanded the Muslims to boycot KFC and starbucks. This is ridiculous. This is because according to the statistics 60% of the starbucks employees are Malays (which are 95% muslims). If Muslims do boycott and eventually close down the company who will be disadvantaged? NO ONE..but Muslims! They will be unemployed and hence suffer. Due to this kind of unthoughtful commands by the Islamic party other races in Malaysia who are non muslims look down on Muslims once again. Thank god there were other muslims that came and opposed this command.

There is no doubt that it is prescribed to engage in jihad against the enemies of Allaah, Jews and others, with our lives and our wealth. That includes every means that will weaken their economy and cause them harm. Money is the lifeblood of wars ancient and modern.

The Muslims in general should cooperate in righteousness and piety and help the Muslims in all places in ways that will lead them to prevail and strengthen them and enable them to manifest the symbols of religion, to practise the teachings of Islam and to implement the rulings of sharee’ah and carry out hudood punishments, and whatever will lead to their victory over the kuffaar, Jews, Christians and others. They should strive their hardest in jihad against the enemies of Allaah with all the means at their disposal. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Strive against the mushrikeen with your wealth, your lives and your tongues (speech).” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 2504; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.

The Muslims have to help the mujaahideen as much as they can, and do everything that will strengthen Islam and the Muslims. They must also strive against the kuffaar in whatever ways they can, and do everything they can to weaken the kuffaar and the enemies of Islam. They should not employ them as workers such as typists, accountants, engineers or servants in any kind of service that gives them more power to collect the wealth of the Muslims and use it against them.

Conclusion:

The one who boycotts the products of the kuffaar who are waging war against Islam, intending thereby to make manifest the fact that he does not like or support them, and to weaken their economy, will be rewarded in sha Allah for this good intention.

Whoever deals with them on the basis of the principle that it is permissible to deal with the kuffaar – especially buying things that he needs – there is no sin on him, in sha Allaah, and that does not affect the principle of al-wala’ wa’l-bara’ (loyalty and friendship vs. disavowal and enmity) in Islam

Imam al-Bukhaari (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Chapter: Buying and selling with the mushrikeen and people who are at war with Islam.

Then he narrated (2216) that ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Abi Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) then a mushrik man came with some sheep that he was driving. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Are they for sale or a gift?” He said: “For sale.” So he bought a sheep from him.

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Sharh Saheeh Muslim (11/14):

The Muslims are unanimously agreed that it is permissible to interact with ahl al-dhimmah (non-Muslims living under Muslim rule) and other kuffaar, so long as the object of the transaction is not haraam, but it is not permissible for a Muslim to sell weapons or tools of war to those who are waging war against the Muslims, or anything that helps them to support their religion.

Ibn Battaal said: dealing with the kuffaar is permissible, except for selling things to those who are at war with the Muslims that may help them against the Muslims.

It was narrated in al-Majmoo’ (9/432) that there is scholarly consensus that it is forbidden to sell weapons to people who are waging war against Muslims.

The reason for that is obvious, which is that these weapons will be used to fight the Muslims.
