This topic came to mind just yesterday, mashallah. My daughter carries a cell phone to school, but she turns it off before she gets inside school. When she gets out, she turns it back on. She is 13 and very responsible and with the things going on in public school these days, I feel better with her with it than without it. She came home yesterday and said they were scanning students for electronic stuff like cell phones, ipods etc...she even went through a metal detector. It was only for yesterday. They took her phone and said that she could not get it back until Friday, along with many other students. Where ever in the world are you, does the school system allow cell phones in school, like here in New York where they are banned and not allowed?? I feel it is a necessity for those who use it wisely, but these are the ones who have to suffer for the ones who abuse it. What do you think and what are your views inshallah?? They had the same in my school. I went through the same thing when I was in HS. But b4 I went through the detector, the police told us that if ur cell phones are on, then they will take it away. If its off when u go through the detector then ur fine. Ur daughter's school seems more strict than it needs to be.

May i ask what is reason for the detector? Seriously..my younger brother who is 12, has a cell phone too, which i was completely agaisnt, because i think he's too young to have one..my parents argued security..he has to take the bus, we want to know where he is...he's in a boy's school, and boys at that age 12-16 are horrible..and what i was saying is that the risks of him into troubles are high, being bullied because of his phone, not listening during lessons..It's fashion, everyone has at least 1 if not more..even children
But, if the children are responsible enough to understand the main purpose of a phone ie: for your parents to be reassured, and to waste your time playing or taking pictures of evryone you meet..it depnds on the child i think..here i think you're allowed to have your phone as long as it doesn't go off in the middle of the lesson..and it's forbidden to have it with you during exams..

Were the students warn beforehand about not bringing to school handphone and stuff?

"ET Phone Home"

Asalaamalikum,

It's amazing how far technology has come. When I was 13, I barely knew how to use my home phone. I was in college when I first got my cell phone!

I think you can look at the school policy guideline, either on the internet or ask for a hard copy, then you can see the rules and regulations on cell phones or electronic devices. A lot of middle schools & high schools are lenient about cell phones, but if someone breaks the rule then that privilege is taken away. I wonder if the teachers are allowed to carry cell phones??

lolz the high school i went to(NY) allowed cell phones but not in the cafetaria. they had those metal ceiling thingys which jame the signals in cafetaria. v had to use payphones in cafetaria lolz. i think in NY most of the high school allow cell phones but junior highs and elementary school dont allow cell phones. Even in pakistan where i m now the schools dont allow cell phones.

The students were not notified beforehand, which was absolutely ridiculous!! The principal of the school was out there and said that he would escort her inside and walk her through it!! I was like how nice of you(lol!) Parents pay good money for these things, and no one has the right to take it away. If I knew thay were going to do this, I would have told her to keep her phone home! Ya Allah!!:SMILY286:

Brother, the metal detectors are actually there to protect the students from school shootings before it takes place by detecting the weapon first. It's not there to be intimidating. I can understand where the schools stand on this.

The whole cell phone deal exist to actually to prevent theft. In my school when we got searched they simply told us that "Parents always bought their kids cell phones and other electronic devices and the school does not have a problem with that. But, when it's stolen the parents love to blame the school for it. They feel as though the school should've provided more security."

The whole taking away the cell phone deal make sense to me. Parents always want the best for their child and thats why they buy them these things but when things go wrong they always look for someone to blame.

Metal detectors arent the only precautions they took. They also searched the cars of students as they drove into the school's parking lot one after the other. It was interesting to see all the things that they found. Everything from Marijuana to cocaine other drugs. They even found knives and things.

So it's easy to see why the school would go this far. It may seem ridiculous, but in the end it's necessary for the student's safety.

wow. when i was in high school cell phones were allowed and if they did go off during class it was up to the teacher whether or not they wanted to talk the cell phone away for the class, or the day, or to give a warning or detention. even in middle school it was the same ordeal. they were just annoying to the teachers (and students), and they did get stolen a lot too.

Salam sister, well here in Belgium it depends. In my children scholl it is allowed to carry on the cell phones but they have to turn it off. Otherwise ,they get their mobile confiscated. Well ,in that point I think they are right, do you imagine if every kid is recieving calls? But i know that in bigger schools there are many many problems, there are many problems of robbery and children being beaten because of their cell phones. When we lived in Tokyo my mum used to buy to us a sort of microship or a stuff like that to be put on in our bag and inside our parka, because she felt that we were not safety at all(it is something that allows the police to find you but I dn't know very much how it works). I know that there's nothing like that here in Belgium (we have less problems of security than Tokyo and States) but I 'm sure you can find that in States. Maybe you will feel more calm knowing that your daughter is carrying this thing. Massalama:hearts:
