In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
[All] praise is [due] to Allah , Lord of the worlds -
The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,
Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
Guide us to the straight path -
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray. Surat Al-Fatihah
Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala introduces Himself to us in Surat Al-Fatihah. He wants us to understand first and foremost His Mercy which is All Encompassing. We are all to worship Him, it is our duty and our reason for existing, and only He can help us, all we have to do is simply ask and He will provide whatever we need. Therefore, if We ask Him through prayer He will guide us to Himself and Everlasting life. This path is very selective, only people of certain quality are guided to this Path, those who are worthy and those who have obeyed His commands and did what is righteous. Only choosing this Path leads to salvation as people before were chosen and given the same chances only for them to evoke His anger because of disobedience and another group who are misguided as they associate partners to the One True God Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala. Some people say that Surat Al-Fatihah is the whole Qur'an compressed into just seven beautiful verses, it gives us the essence of what the Holy Qur'an is all about.

This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah -
Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them,
And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].

Surat Al-Baqarah 1-6
Then when you turn the page you will come to Surat Al-Baqarah the longest chapter of the Holy Qur'an. Here Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala explains to us in more detail what is required of us, the history of the former people that He chose and their rejection. Again like Surat Al-Fatihah the first six verses of this chapter succinctly tells us all that we need to know. That is the Holy Qur'an is a book that He sent down to mankind so that they may be saved through the actions and a life that we are to follow.
When one is reading the Holy Qur'an and we understand what we are reading the first thirteen verses should give us a framework to go on. The Holy Qur'an is a book of life and death, it clearly outlines the steps needed for us to live a good and pious life which will result in us being rewarded with eternal life, or the opposite of which is death and eternity in hell fire.
This does not mean that the two choices we have are straight forward or even easy. Each individual faces inner struggles and temptations that are very hard to control, an easy life if you forsake what is written in the Holy Qur'an and choose a 'worldly' life. Sadly, the majority are choosing the easy life of comfort and excess rather than discipline and self-control. The vast majority of people that ever lived or will live on this earth will choose the former rather than the latter, Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala Himself tells us this very fact in the Holy Qur'an. Most of the human race are heading for hell fire and most don't even give a damn. They don't realise that the real life is not the one they are living on earth but it is yet to come. This life is a test, only people who pass this test will live that real life and that real life is the Hereafter. What else can be real than spending eternity with our Maker and Sustainer? That is the ultimate goal, our reason to exist.
