An earthquake has shaken Manchester for the sixth time in a month.

The minor earth tremor was felt in the city centre just after 0545 BST but there have not been any reports of injuries or damage to property.

Seismologists at the British Geological Survey (BGS) in Edinburgh have confirmed the quake measured 2.4 on the Richter scale.

A spokesman from the BGS said: "Much of the reports were of rumbling and faint shaking."

He added: "Some people said their beds rattled and moved. One person said a building creaked.

'Nine a year'

"An earthquake that size doesn't do damage.

"It's special when it happens in a city because more people report it.

"We have earthquakes of this magnitude occurring all the time, about nine a year on average."

An earthquake measuring 2.5 was felt in Manchester centre, Reddish, Didsbury, Failsworth and Denton on 10 August.

The BGS said such tremors were not uncommon and there were eight or nine a year in Britain.

Manchester was hit by a series of tremors five years ago.

<Makes you think, huh, their could be a really powerful one>
