Hello everyone,
I had a question about evolution in Islam. When I was studying the Qur'an a while back, I saw the following passage:
"Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?" (21:30)
When I read this I was very amazed as there was no way that 1,400 years ago the Prophet Muhammad could have known that the origins of life were from water, and it would have sounded very strange to people at that time. When I read this I thought it was referring to evolution as scientists believe simple organisms first developed in water and then gradually evolved into more complex life, however I've seen many Muslims on Islamic forums as well as scholars trying to dispute evolution in online videos and such things.
So I am asking, do Muslims believe in evolution? And if not, what exactly is meant by the passage I quoted?
Thank you very much!
