Sunnah Dua on going away on a trip

احبك ىارب
It is Sunnah to say to the one going away on a trip:

أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللهَ دِينَكَ وَأَمَانَتَكَ وَخَوَاتِيمَ عَمَلِكَ

Astawdi‘ullāha dīnaka wa amānataka wa khawātīma ‘amalik.

“I entrust Allāh with your religion, that which is of value to you, and your final deeds.” (Ahmad, 4524, sahīh)

Meaning, your deen sometimes wavers when you’re out of good company, and on the road, And the “trust” you’ve left at home i.e. your family and wealth etc need protecting. And the most important deeds are not what you did yesterday but those which you close your account with. Putting these three key aspects of life in the trust of Allah is the best thing you can do and the best gift you can give to another Muslim by way of your du‘ā.

That’s far better than you telling me to “have a safe trip!” Like, instead of taking a flight, I was really going to jump off a mountain, roll down its jagged side and then let the raging torrent at the bottom float me to my destination!

I know you mean good. But that’s not enough for Muslims. You should mean better. Sunnah is better.
