Assalamua'alaykum wa rahmatullah,
Here in Malaysia:
Kindergarden (kids age 5/6 yrs old)
Primary School: Standard/Year 1-6
Year 6 we have a national exam (UPSR) where all Year 6 students will take an exam consists of 5 papers basically on the same day throughout the country. The exam usually takes a week. The papers will then be graded by the Ministry of Education and results will be announce approximately 1-2 months later.
Those who achieve good results will usually have brighter chances to pursue in boarding schools.
Secondary School: Form 1-5
During Form 3, there will be another national examination (PMR). Those in public schools usually take 8 papers while those in Islamic schools (madraasah) 9 papers. Addition paper is Arabic language. Its during form 4, students will be divided into various streams such as art streams students and science students.
During Form 5, this is the MAJOR exam in a school's student life (SPM). This is where students usually takes lots of papers, so far there was a student taking until 21 papers if Im not mistaken but since this/last year, The Ministry of Education has limited the papers students can take. Usually those who achieved result Jayyid Jiddan
will have the opportunity to further studies overseas.
After that, students pursue their education in
colleges/universities for foundation basically, then only they will enter 1st year course etc. Mostly Chinese students will take Form 6 classes, then only they enter universities. As for Malays and others, they usually go to Matriculation College for 1 year and then to Universities.
Thats some brief "story" how the education system works here.
Wassalamua'alaykum.
