Eid Ul Adhar

Assalam Alaikum,
I was having a discussion with a brother the other day surrounding the above mentioned issue.
I never took part in the sacrifice, in that I have a problem just being witness to the slaughter and not to particular to red meat.
However, I choose to give the same value to an orphanage for muslim children.
I was told that the bounties of the actual sacrifice surpasses the bounties of charity to orphans.
Many muslims give the meat to the very said orphanage and sometime it is so much, that they have tell people via the media to call in advance and state how much they intend to donate.
So, my question is am I subscribing to wrong school of thought?
