salam alaycom,
sorry this has nthing to do with islam..but please could answer this?

Does a "hyphen" effect the alphabetical order of the work cited sources in a research paper?

When I cite my sources in my research I have to do them in a alphabetical order. What if there were a "hyphen" in it? Would it effect?

like here is an example:

1) "Tea - A Tooth Healthy Drink" HealthAndYoga. 11 March. 2009

2) "Tea History: Japan." GreenTeaLovers. 1 March. 2009

3) "Tea - Where It Comes From" StashTea. 14 March. 2009

Does it go 1,2,3 or is it 1,3,2 or 2,1,3?

like which one comes first

Assalam alaikom wa rahma tullah wa burrahktohu,

Personally i would actually follow the order of 1,2,3, that seems concise and logical.

You should always be able to get advice from the tutor of the course though because the point about learning is having a tutor to give you guidance and constructive help inshAllah. That is the sign of good teaching.

Jazak alak khairun wa barak Allah feekom

I like your post sister. Regardless of whether there is a hypen or not you would still list your referecnes in alphabetically order according to the way you have been told. For example if you are using the HARVARD SYSTEM of referecing (one that I have been told to use) you would list your referecnes beginning with the author's surname first, followed, by the initial, then the date it was published, and so forth.

If you are expected to list the title first - then you are absoultelt right in your order - i.e. 1, 2, and 3.

I hope this has helped in some way, and just to double check, ask one of your tutors.

Salam!

Jazakum allahu khayran for replying back sisters. Actually I asked my teacher but he doesn't know and said that he'll search for it. BTW I use the MLA citation style and have no idea about the Harvard system.

Thank you for your time. :)

It will also partly depend on how the hyphen is used. If the hyphen is part of the title than you should ignore it and consider the hyphenated words, in your example, as if there were no hyphen. If the hyphen is separating a title from a subtitle, than you would alphabetize by the title first and then move into separating by the subtitle. If the subtitle is an integral part of the word, ie. actor-director, you would list the words in alphabetical order as if it was a single word with no hyphen.
