harmed by envy or evil eye
Just like people can damage each other by physically beating each other, they can also cause damage on a spiritual level. Jus like people can injure themselves; they can also injure themselves spiritually. Hence, the prophet (pbuh) said if you see something you like in yourself or others then ask Allah to bless it. self inflicted evil eye and one given by others are the same but mechanisms are different. the first is by 'e3jab' (vanity) and the second by 'hasad (envy).
Giving others the evil eye is a sin. The prophet (pbuh) said it destroys one’s good deeds like fire destroys straw. This is because the evil eye results from a compound of sins pivoted around the person not being content by the distribution of things in the universe(gadar).
It is best not to obsess about the evil eye by remembering that it is not the only way a person can receive harm,.ie. sometimes harm comes as bala (tribulation), or due to one’s mistakes, or just part of gadar, etc.#
Remember that the person who gives the evil eye are destroyed just like the person who was given the evil eye. This is because the feeling of envy is anger, and anger destroys. This is why sometimes some people try and ignite envy in others in order to hurt their feelings.
Anything can be given the evil eye and this includes animals and inanimate objects.
Best prevention is to keep special things special, and be careful with showing other people’s your precious things (spiritual things too, like dreams etc). Some companions even tried to give the illusion that something isn’t perfect or good in order to protect it from the evil eye. Subhan Allah, in our times people try and give the illusion of perfection to what is not perfect (e.g. makeup), while the salaf applied dark spots in order to prevent the evil eye.
Know that just because a person is pious does not mean they will not give the evil eye. The companions gave the evil eye to each other. This is because maybe that person has still not cured that disease from their system. And vice versa, sometimes a not so religious person does not give the evil eye as they are not diseased by envy. On this note I add, it is a human phenomenon not limited to the muslims but includes all humans of different races and religions. The quran mentions how the Jews wanted the prophet (pbuh) to physically slip out of their jealousy.
One of the physical manifestations of a person having the evil eye is dark spots in their body. In the sunnah it is mentioned in the face, but the people of spirituality consider that they can be in any part.
Also if someone gives a another the evil eye, and the person is cured from it, if they see that person again, the evil eye can come again. That is if the person hvn’t cured himself from the disease of envy.
