YMCA's 'Palestine International Bike Race' thwarted by Israeli military restrictions
Date: 23 / 03 / 2007 Time: 17:21

Bethlehem - Ma'an - The Israeli forces banned 250 Palestinian bicycle riders from cycling to Jericho on Friday.

Israeli sources said that the Israeli forces stopped the cyclists near the village of Jaba', near the city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, from continuing their way to Jericho. The Israeli army claims that the Palestinians would be travelling through Israeli areas without permission or the necessary coordination to do so.

The cycle ride was intended to highlight "the increasing need to stop violating human rights and lift the movement restrictions and blocks which prevent the Palestinian to [sic] move freely," according to a press release from the cycle ride organisers, the East Jerusalem YMCA's 'Youth To Youth Initiative'. The cyclists, who included several Israelis and foreigners in addition to hundreds of Palestinian youths, were due to head from central Ramallah to central Jericho on Friday, where trophies were planned for the winners of the race. The Israeli military restrictions, however, stopped this race from hardly starting.
