Few Characteristics of a Muslim

Mohsin

abdu'Allah
:bismillah:

first of the basic characteristics that a muslim should posses is

YOU (Allah) do we worship, and YOUR (Allah's) aid we seek.
Show us the straight way
[ Fatiha : 5 and 6 ]

that we should always serve Allah and whatever we do we should always ask Allah to guide us into the matter.

now some more characteristics that are required of a Muslim

Those who believe in the unseen and keep up prayer and spend out of what We have given them
And who believe in that which has been revealed to you and that which was revealed before you and they are sure of the hereafter
[Baqarah : 3 and 4 ]

It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the East and the West, but righteousness is this that one should believe in Allah and the last day and the angels and the Book and the prophets, and give away wealth out of love for Him to the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and the beggars and for (the emancipation of) the captives, and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate; and the performers of their promise when they make a promise, and the patient in distress and affliction and in time of conflicts-- these are they who are true (to themselves) and these are they who guard (against evil).
[Baqarah : 177]

For, Believers are those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts, and when they hear His signs rehearsed, find their faith strengthened, and put (all) their trust in their Lord;
Who establish regular prayers and spend (freely) out of the gifts We have given them for sustenance
[Anfal :2 and 3]

O ye who believe! Fear Allah and be with those who are true (in word and deed).
[ Taubah : 119 ]

Do not associate with Allah any other god, lest you sit down despised, neglected.
And your Lord has commanded that you shall not serve (any) but Him, and goodness to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) "Ugh" nor chide them, and speak to them a generous word.
And make yourself submissively gentle to them with compassion, and say: O my Lord! have compassion on them, as they brought me up (when I was) a child
Your Lord knows best what is in your minds; if you are good, then He is surely Forgiving to those who turn (to Him) frequently
And give to the near of kin his due and (to) the needy and the wayfarer, and do not squander wastefully.
Surely the squanderers are the fellows of the Shaitans and the Shaitan is ever ungrateful to his Lord.
And if you turn away from them to seek mercy from your Lord, which you hope for, speak to them a gentle word
And do not make your hand to be shackled to your neck nor stretch it forth to the utmost (limit) of its stretching forth, lest you should (afterwards) sit down blamed, stripped off.
Surely your Lord makes plentiful the means of subsistence for whom He pleases and He straitens (them); surely He is ever Aware of, Seeing, His servants
And do not kill your children for fear of poverty; We give them sustenance and yourselves (too); surely to kill them is a great wrong.
And go not near to fornication; surely it is an indecency and an evil way.
And do not kill any one whom Allah has forbidden, except for a just cause, and whoever is slain unjustly, We have indeed given to his heir authority, so let him not exceed the just limits in slaying; surely he is aided.
And draw not near to the property of the orphan except in a goodly way till he attains his maturity and fulfill the promise; surely (every) promise shall be questioned about.
And give full measure when you measure out, and weigh with a true balance; this is fair and better in the end.
And follow not that of which you have not the knowledge; surely the hearing and the sight and the heart, all of these, shall be questioned about that.
And do not go about in the land exultingly, for you cannot cut through the earth nor reach the mountains in height
Of all such things the evil is hateful in the sight of thy Lord
This is of what your Lord has revealed to you of wisdom, and do not associate any other god with Allah lest you should be thrown into hell, blamed, cast away.
[Bani-Israel : 22 to 39]

The believers must (eventually) win through
Those who humble themselves in their prayers
Who avoid vain talk
Who are active in deeds of charity
And who guard their private parts
Except before their mates or those whom their right hands possess, for they surely are not blameable
But whoever seeks to go beyond that, these are they that exceed the limits;
And those who are keepers of their trusts and their covenant
And those who keep a guard on their prayers
[Mu'minoon : 1 to 9]

And when Luqman said to his son while he admonished him: O my son! do not associate aught with Allah; most surely polytheism is a grievous iniquity--
And We have enjoined man in respect of his parents-- his mother bears him with faintings upon faintings and his weaning takes two years-- saying: Be grateful to Me and to both your parents; to Me is the eventual coming
And if they contend with you that you should associate with Me what you have no knowledge of, do not obey them, and keep company with them in this world kindly, and follow the way of him who turns to Me, then to Me is your return, then will I inform you of what you did--
O my son! surely if it is the very weight of the grain of a mustard-seed, even though it is in (the heart of) rock, or (high above) in the heaven or (deep down) in the earth, Allah will bring it (to light); surely Allah is Knower of subtleties, Aware;
O my son! keep up prayer and enjoin the good and forbid the evil, and bear patiently that which befalls you; surely these acts require courage
And do not turn your face away from people in contempt, nor go about in the land exulting overmuch; surely Allah does not love any self-conceited boaster;
And pursue the right course in your going about and lower your voice; surely the most hateful of voices is braying of the asses.
[Luqman 13 to 19]

Who is better in speech than one who calls (men) to Allah, works righteousness, and says, "I am of those who bow in Islam"?
Nor can goodness and Evil be equal. Repel (Evil) with what is better: Then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate!
And no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint,- none but persons of the greatest good fortune.
And if (at any time) an incitement to discord is made to thee by the Evil One, seek refuge in Allah. He is the One Who hears and knows all things
[Fussilat : 33 to 36]

And those who shun the great sins and indecencies, and whenever they are angry they forgive
Those who hearken to their Lord, and establish regular Prayer; who (conduct) their affairs by mutual Consultation; who spend out of what We bestow on them for Sustenance;
And those who, when an oppressive wrong is inflicted on them, (are not cowed but) help and defend themselves.
And the recompense of evil is punishment like it, but whoever forgives and amends, he shall have his reward from Allah; surely He does not love the unjust
[ Shura : 37 to 40 ]

O ye who believe! If a wicked person comes to you with any news, ascertain the truth, lest ye harm people unwittingly, and afterwards become full of repentance for what ye have done
[ Hujrat : 6 ]

And if two parties of the believers quarrel, make peace between them; but if one of them acts wrongfully towards the other, fight that which acts wrongfully until it returns to Allah's command; then if it returns, make peace between them with justice and act equitably; surely Allah loves those who act equitably.
The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers; and fear Allah, that ye may receive Mercy.
O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: It may be that the (latter are better than the (former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong.
O ye who believe! Avoid suspicion as much (as possible): for suspicion in some cases is a sin: And spy not on each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay, ye would abhor it...But fear Allah: For Allah is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful
O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).
[ Hujrat :9 to 13 ]

I swear by the time
Most surely man is in loss
Except those who believe and do good, and enjoin on each other truth, and enjoin on each other patience
[ Al-Asr]

these are the few qualities we find in the Quran as demanded of a Muslim ( i mean i found if any one will look carefully they will find many more, inshaAllah ). There are warnings and glad tidings as well. I will quote only few of them both

WAKE UP CALL

Has not the time yet arrived for the Believers that their hearts in all humility should engage in the remembrance of Allah and of the Truth which has been revealed (to them), and that they should not become like those to whom was given Revelation aforetime, but long ages passed over them and their hearts grew hard? For many among them are rebellious transgressors.
[ Hadid : 16 ]

GLAD TIDINGS

And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord; and a Garden, the extensiveness of which is (as) the heavens and the earth, it is prepared for those who guard (against evil).
Those who spend (benevolently) in ease as well as in straitness, and those who restrain (their) anger and pardon men; and Allah loves the doers of good (to others).
And those who when they commit an indecency or do injustice to their souls remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their faults-- and who forgives the faults but Allah, and (who) do not knowingly persist in what they have done
[ Aal-e-Imran : 133 to 135]

he who believes in Allah and the latter day; and whoever is careful of (his duty to) Allah, He will make for him an outlet,
And He provides for him from (sources) he never could imagine. And if any one puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is (Allah) for him. For Allah will surely accomplish his purpose: verily, for all things has Allah appointed a due proportion
[Talaq : 3]

LAST WORDS

Say: "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful
[ Zumar : 35]
