Food to Family of Deceased‏

At the time when Jafar (radi Allahu anhu) attained martyrdom, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) instructed: “Let food be sent to Jafar’s house, for the inmates of his house in their abundance of grief will not be able to cook a meal.” [Abu Dawud]

Support one another in grief and pain. Help take care of one another by bringing food to and feeding those who are too grieved or busy to do it for themselves.

Thus, the culture of the Muslims is to take food to the family of the deceased, not an expectation to be fed. Put aside your cultural or family practices and adopt the customs of those whom Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) is pleased with.

I seem to recall this is also a practice done in some Orthodox Jewish homes during the shiva (mourning after a funeral) week, particularly on the Sabbath where there cannot be any work done.
