  • Sun shields, marble flooring, mist fans among measures to protect worshippers from intense heat
RIYADH: Authorities in Saudi Arabia have outlined how they are making Hajj as comfortable as possible for pilgrims arriving in Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi Press Agency documented the arrival of pilgrims from various nationalities at the Prophet’s Mosque, highlighting the extensive care provided by the the General Authority for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque.
The measures include the provision of cold Zamzam water around the clock.
Managed by the Zamzam Water Department, the operation involves transporting 300 tons of Zamzam water daily from its source in Makkah to the Prophet’s Mosque.
The water undergoes rigorous testing in laboratories and is distributed to thousands of coolers placed throughout the mosque, SPA reported.
The Prophet’s Mosque courtyards are also equipped with 250 large sun shields, which are 15 meters high and weigh 40 tons each, to provide shade and protection for up to 228,000 worshippers.
They feature intricate gold-plated copper designs and are equipped with a water drainage system. To combat the intense heat, 436 mist fans have been installed, which mix cold air with water mist to create a cooler environment for pilgrims.
The floor of the mosque and its courtyards is covered with a rare type of white marble imported specifically for the Two Holy Mosques.
The flooring reflects sunlight and retains moisture, enhancing the comfort of worshippers. The marble pieces are precisely installed facing the Qibla, and are carefully maintained and reinstalled during expansion works.

Haj 2024: Saudi expands road cooling initiative around holy sites

First implemented last year, the idea stems from the fact that roads absorb heat during the day, with temperatures sometimes reaching 70°C

Saudi Arabia's Roads General Authority has announced the expansion of the asphalt surface cooling initiative in several locations within the holy sites.

Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Thursday that the initiative aims to reduce temperatures in neighbourhoods and residential areas, lower the energy used to cool buildings and mitigate the effects of climate change.
This technology contributes to providing a more comfortable environment in waiting areas and locations where people gather.

The initiative has been implemented next to Namira Mosque in Arafat, covering an area of 25,000 square metres. The authority is executing the initiative in partnership with several relevant entities, including the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, the Pilgrim Experience Programme, the Quality of Life Program, and the Holy Capital Municipality.

The idea of this initiative, first implemented last year in the holy sites, stems from the fact that roads absorb heat during the day, with temperatures sometimes reaching 70° C. Roads then release this heat at night, causing a phenomenon known as the 'urban heat island effect', which leads to increased energy consumption and air pollution.

The need to address the 'urban heat island effect' prompted the experiment with 'cool pavements', made from locally produced materials capable of absorbing less solar radiation. This experiment results in a lower surface temperature than traditional pavements, making it suitable for roads around residential areas.

The authority is developing research and practical experiments as part of its role as a government supervisory and regulatory body for the road sector in the Kingdom. These experiments align with the sector's strategic vision, encouraging innovation.

The road sector's strategy also aims to improve the quality of roads to achieve a higher global ranking and reduce fatalities to fewer than five per 100,000 people by 2030.

  • The electric flying taxi will transport pilgrims across holy sites, facilitate the swift transfer of medical emergencies and supplies, as well as deliver goods.
MAKKAH: Saudi Arabia has inaugurated a pioneering self-driving aerial taxi service for pilgrims during this year’s Hajj season.

The electric flying taxi will transport pilgrims across holy sites, facilitate the swift transfer of medical emergencies and supplies, as well as deliver goods, state news agency SPA reported.
1718189932667.png
Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistic Services, said the flying taxi is the world’s first to be licensed by a civil aviation authority.
On Wednesday, Al-Jasser witnessed the vertical takeoff of the autonomous vehicle during the launch event attended by Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, president of General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA); Rumaih Al-Rumaih, Deputy Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, and several representatives of related entities.
The minister said the inauguration of the air taxi was part of the efforts to apply the latest future transport technologies and adopt innovative environment-friendly transport models that use artificial intelligence applications.
In line with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, the Kingdom aims to modernize the transport sector through the launch of air taxi technologies, electric cars and hydrogen trains.
Al-Jasser said the ministry is working to enhance smart mobility and develop legislation, laws, and systems that enable the employment of modern technologies.
It also seeks to provide experimental environments to facilitate the expansion of future transport technologies.
GACA’s Al-Duailej said the flying taxi was one of the most significant initiatives of the advanced air mobility roadmap, which aims to reduce passenger travel time within congested areas, especially during emergencies, facilitate the transportation of goods and medical supplies, and complete surveillance and inspection tasks in a speedy manner.
The aerial taxi is among 32 modern technologies applied to serve pilgrims during this year’s Hajj.
