A'salaamulaykoum-

My cousin (non-Muslim) and I were discussing giving kids honey....she was supporting the argument that honey can cause Botulism in infants and toddlers and she won't give her 1 1/2 year old honey....I am curious to know others opinions on honey, and also to know if Islamically there is anything we know about this...and about feeding our children certain things.

JazakAllah-

Sister in Islam

I found this info previously....

Salam,
In addition...I found this info previously and noted that the sister even suggested honey in the baby's bottle, which would suggest that giving it to babies is acceptable by her....

The Holy QURAN in Surat an-Nahl vr.68-69 says:

"And your Lord revealed to the bee saying: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in what they build: Then eat of all the fruits and walk in the ways of your Lord submissively. There comes forth from within it a beverage of many colours, in which there is healing for mankind; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect."

Resolve your daily problems by using Honey and know how HONEY can cure it and how useful it is. Listed
below are some common problems which can be cured by honey :

HONEY

Over the centuries, the great power and strength possessed by honey has been under estimated by scientists. If only they looked towards ISLAM, they would have found an element whose curing ability has surprised all levels of intellect.

A few of the very many cures from honey have been outlined:

For burns

Apply freely over burns. It cools, removes pain and aids fast healing without scarring. Apart from being a salve and antibiotic, bacteria cannot live in honey.

Bed Wetting

A teaspoon of honey before bed aids water retention and calms fears in children.

Sleeplessness

A dessert spoon of honey in a mug of hot milk aids sleep and works wonders!

Hyperactivity

Honey is a mild sedative with minerals, vitamins, amino acids etc. Replace all white sugar with honey. White sugar is highly stimulating with no food qualities.

Nasal Congestion

Place a dessert spoon of honey in a basin of hot water and inhale fumes after covering your head with a towel over the basin.

Wounds or Grazes

Cover wound with honey and a bandage. Excellent healer.

For Fatigue

Dissolve a desert spoon of honey in warm water or quarter honey balance of water in a jug and keep in the fridge. Honey is primarily fructose and glucose and so it is quickly absorbed by the digestive system. (Honey is a unique natural stabilizer - ancient Greek athletes took honey for stamina before competing and as a reviver after competition.)

Facial Deep Cleanser

Mix honey with oatmeal approx. 50/50 till thick and apply as a face-pack. Leave on for half an hour then wash off. Great as a deep cleanser for acne .

Poor Digestion

Mix honey with apple cider vinegar approx. 50/50 and dilute to taste with water. This aids digestion. (Also reputed to be wonderful for the joints.)

Hair Conditioner

Mix honey with equal quantity of Olive Oil and cover head with a warm towel for half an hour then shampoo off. Feeds hair and scalp. Hair will never look or feel better!

Sore Throats

Let a teaspoon of honey melt in the back of the mouth and trickle down the throat. Eases inflamed raw tissues.

For Stress

Honey in water is a stabilizer - calms highs and raises lows. Use approx. 25 percent honey to water.

Anaemia

Honey is the best blood en-richer by raising corpuscle content. The darker the honey the more minerals it contains.

Food Preservative

Cakes with honey replacing sugar stay fresher longer due to natural antibiotics. Reduce liquids by approx. one-fifth to allow for moisture in honey.

Heart Patients

These people are well advised to replace white sugar (sucrose) with honey, natural fructose and glucose.

Hay-fever

Chewing the tops of comb honey stimulates the immune system due to minuteamounts of pollen. During the season chew for 20 minutes a teaspoon of bee capping (tops) five to six times per day. Highly effective and useful for asthma sufferers as well.

Baby's Bottle

Four teaspoons of honey to a baby's bottle of water is an excellent pacifier and multivitamin additive. If baby's motions are too liquid then reduce by half a teaspoon; if too solid increase by half a teaspoon.

Teething

Honey rubbed on a baby's gums is a mild sedative and anaesthetic.

Osteoporosis

English research has shown that a teaspoon of honey per day aids calcium utilization and prevents osteoporosis. Essential from age 50 onwards.

Long Life

One common fact worldwide is that the most long-lived people are regular users of honey. An interesting fact yet to be explained is that beekeepers suffer less from cancer and arthritis than any other occupational group worldwide.

Migraine

Use a dessertspoon of honey dissolved in half a glass of warm water. Sip at start of attack. If necessary repeat in 20 minutes. Always effective (so tip goes) as migraine is stress related.

Conjunctivitis (pus in the eye)

Honey dissolved in equal quantity of warm water. Apply, when cooled, as lotion or eye bath.

Cough mixture

6 oz. liquid honey
2 oz. glycerin
Juice of 2 lemons
Mix well. Bottle and cork firmly. Use as required

Important:

Keep honey in first aid cupboard for emergency use, and another in the kitchen cupboard.

I would advice not to give honey to babys under one year old I study in this field and I have two daughters who are sick many times a year so I went to many doctors and all of them say its dangerous for the kids life to give thme hney under one year old, so my opnion is that you should look for the millions of other natural medicines you can give a baby to relief it from pain when its geting teeth etc of course you can apply honey form the outside that wouldnt harm.

Hope that helped

Botulism! Subhana-Allaah.

Botulism, if present in honey, would have killed all the men and women who consume it. It's not only harmful to babies. It's a very poisonous toxin.

And it cannot be "created" inside the body. It must come from the outside.

Adding : Since the child hasn't got a proper developed immune system, it may be very dangerous to supply it to a child below 1 years old, preferably 2 (to stay on the safe side) because, as mentioned above, honey contains a toxin called botulism.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that raw honey not be given to infants under one year of age because of the rare possibility of being infected with the bacteria that causes botulism (Clostridium botulinum). Once a toddler reaches one year old, their digestive system is mature enough to kill any botulism germs.

I think it depends of where the honey is from... not sure 100% but I've read it somewhere. For example in England they say NOT to give it to babies under 1 yr, in Italy I remember a different story.... wa Allahu a'alam.

I personally use it for my family... no matter the age

wow- soooooo cool!i luv honey! and so did Prohet Muhammad (SAW)! sis- did u know that honey can NEVER SPOIL? IT WILL ALWAYS BE FRESH AND GOOD- UNTIL U EAT IT!!!!!!!! once i was making a loaf of bread- i thought it was ridiculous cuz it said to put in sugar- NOT HEALTHY!!!! so i replaced the sugar with honey! was SOOOO amazing!!!

Thanks!

Salaam,

JazkaAllah for all the feedback.....I think what I am taking from this is that only Allah knows (obviously), but that honey is okay for little kids in moderation....perhaps waiting until after 1 year of age to have them eat it. The problem with food nowdays is that so much garbage is added to it....if we can find truly PURE honey, then I bet it wouldn't cause any diseases, for Allah (SWT) tells us of its healing powers.

Someone told me once their is a test you can do to find out if your honey is truly pure, but I can't recall what it was.....maybe you try to freeze it and if it doesn't freeze it is 100% pure. Does that sound right??? Or am I losing my mind and making things up.....HIGHLY possible....Thanks God tomorrow is Friday insha'Allah, LOL!

Lots of honey topic going on...

Well honey has no side effects, well regarding babies its true in some cases unless its given in minimal quantity.

So usually babies are given honey in small quantity mixed with water.

Honestly, I am amazed at the "Advice" some are giving without knowing anything about the reason not to give honey to infants. Botulism is deadly and can cause paralysis (of respiratory muscles) and since infants do not have the antibodies against it, it will kill them.

Honey from ANYWHERE can have this bacteria and it matters not one wit if it's from here or there. DO NOT GIVE ADVICE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. This is like someone telling you touching a live wire will eletrocute you and people saying, "Well in my opinion that won't happen." Seriously??? This isn't about opinion but facts. There is no "safe amount" to give infants since it only takes ONE bacterium to do the job. And "pure" honey is just as dangerous too.

Do NOT give honey to infants under 12 months, don't. Full stop. And brothers and sisters, unless you have a medical degree or education in microbiology, please refrain from giving your "opinions" on such a matter. Stick to the facts or remain silent.
