GAZA, (PIC) -- The atrocious weather conditions which hit the Gaza Strip damaged hundreds of houses after they became flooded with rainwater, causing displacement of nearly 500 families including 3, 200 people.
Local sources told the Palestinian information center (PIC) reporter that hundreds of houses in different parts of the Strip have been flooded and the roofs of many homes flew away taken by the gusty winds, while the civil defense crews and municipalities have been trying to help residents in need.
The government confirmed that it has opened 15 shelters for the affected families in all provinces of Gaza.
Sources from rescue teams formed by the Hamas Movement stated that rainwater flooded more than 20 houses when the occupation unexpectedly opened earthen dams east of Deir al-Balah, and that the civil defense and municipal crews evacuated the houses and placed sand berms to control the flowing water.
Rescue teams have also evacuated houses in the north of the Gaza Strip as they were flooded with rainwater.
In Khan Younis, more than 100 homes were also damaged due to the heavy rainfall and brisk winds. Rescue teams had to transfer 20 families to safe places and private shelter centers provided by the Ministry of Social Affairs.
The Ministry said already 500 families, including more than 3,200 people, have been forced to take emergency shelter in nearby schools and police stations, where they have received assistance such as food, clothing and blankets.
Palestinian premier Ismail Haneyya appealed to the international community and the world countries to extend a helping hand to Gaza, and save it from its deteriorating humanitarian situation resulting from the blockade and the harsh weather conditions.
