How did Prophet Muhammad Address the Difficult People?
When dealing with inappropriate behavior or difficult people, Muhammad (may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would do two things:
(1) Address the general behavior, without specifically naming the person engaged in the behavior,
(2) Address the behavior in a thoughtful question (e.g. why do some people do so and so, or say so and so).
A thoughtful question can make the person aware of his/her inappropriate behavior and maybe hopefully stop it. But this usually happens when the behavior is addressed without directly naming the person and in a non-judgmental tone.
Responding with a thoughtful question and making a non-personal observation, you shift attention from the person to the behavior, and with that you channel his/her energy from self-defense to changing behavior.
