I have noticed that countries around the world have different iftaari and seheri times? Would be really interesting to know how long the fast is in each country? I've heard that in some countries like Norway? the fast could be as long as 20 hours, is that true? I thought my day was long! I would be dying by the end of the fast!!! I always feel so weak by the end of the day, I can barely sit for 5 minutes straight!!

Anyway, here in the South China Sea, its 14.5 hours. (Wow, just looking at this number makes me feel astonished by how much a muslim sacrifices in terms of basic life needs like water, basic comfort, almost like a superhuman! and on top of that we are required to increase our offerings of prayer, really testing the limits of human abilities)

Could I say that Ramadhan is also a month of sacrifice...

    Assalaamualaikum wa re wa barakatuhu

Is it really a sacrifice? Am sure we are rewarded for the things we give up for Allah SWT. More like, Transaction? That's what I learnt from a bayan. Alhamdulilah.

And We have around [India], 14.50 hrs. Same as yours sister. Alhamdulilah. Personally, I felt after every Salah, my body just gains energy, I dunno from where, but it does gain. Alhamdulilah. :)

    Peace.

We fast 19 hours here. Before Ramadan I thought that it was going to be hard, but alhamdulillah it's actually very easy to fast. Even children from my neighborhood fast and I haven't heard them complaining tabarak'Allah :)

You know what we tend to overlook? The bodies need for basics that you mention is not as much as the hearts need for Allah ... But how often do we feed our hearts? How often do we feel it needs to be healthy, and pure and at comfort and ease and peace? Just by not eating, one cannot boast such qualities, I am in awe to believe weak, sinful, neglectful and disobedient slaves like us can even consider ourselves super for just not eating and drinking and feeding our desires for a few hours. Is this all Ramadhan is about? Put it this way, if Ramadhan, the fasts, the God consciousness, the abstaining from desires, from feeding into shaytaan, if they were among the voluntary acts, how many of us would engage in it? And so in asking this question, it should be known we are not 'required' to do anything, it is your love, your devotion to, your commitment to Allah, your desire for tasting worship, the expiation of your sins, the refuge from punishment and your desire for a high station in Jannah that drives you to increase these offerings. Allah does not need any of it, we do, it is for us ... SubhanAllah.

Sister Mahzala, you are right in that I have been looking only at the physical aspect of ramadhan, not that I don't gain anything. Through fasting, I have experienced the importance of water in my life (don't laugh), of course many muslims fasting will have thought of this but for me, if I had not had a chance to fast like a muslim, I wouldn't have cared about the water shortage many people face around the world. When it is time to break the fast, my eyes (sadly) are fixed on the crystal clear glass of water, and then my mind wanders off into thinking about all the poor people across the world who have to drink filthy, muddy water to quench their thirst. Those who do not have the choice of using the same water for cleaning and putting it into their mouths. And as I think about this, I shiver a little and ask Allah the merciful and almighty to help these poor people. Help them quench their thirst with the crystal clear water like the one I'm drinking. I wish I were able to help these people but its hard to get the connections right....Because of fasting, water has become the most important aspect of my life...
Other than the physical-spiritual connection above, I must say that I haven't been increasing my efforts in praying that much, I just feel so tired by the end of the day... it has not been a particularly great ramadhan for me this time...sigh...
So can you share what kinds of dhikr you do during the day??
    Thanks you all:)

hopintobelucky, I was merely replying to you, it was not directed at you as such, and of course with no offence intended. MashaAllah, may Allah also give us the same awareness ... I think one of the most challenging things in the rush of Iftar is remembering to invoke ... With voluntary fasts, this is never a problem, in fact, you have more time for reflection and supplication, but during Ramadhan, despite the divine strength we receive, this particular act is among those that needs rectifying ... And MashaAllah, reading your post, seems like you've got this one under your belt. May Allah increase our awareness and steadfastness and bring to our minds His remembrance and invocation, with ease and willingness.

lol 16 hours appx. here in New York City. I heard there is a certain ruling when it comes to 20 something hour long days but you may have to do some research to be sure. Drinking lots of water definitely helps. And someone said to me the other day "Jannah ain't free' lol
