Assalamu Alaikum,

What kind of activities does the organization do?

Wa-alaikumus salam wa rahmatullah sister,

The activities of this organization are confined to engineering discipline. I will include some paragraphs from the proposal that I wrote few months ago. If someone is engineering major and would like to know the planed activities, feel free to ask. Inshallah I will send the proposal .

The City College Chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) is an organization dedicated to encouraging its members to pursue a career in engineering. According to our mission statement (see attachment) we will establish a support system, that will not only benefit the Mechanical engineering students, but all engineers at the City College of New York (CCNY) and the community in which we reside.

Attending professional conferences gives our members exposure to the field of engineering. At the Regional Dinners and the Annual Conferences, students gain exposure to different corporations, research seminars, and students from other universities. At these meetings, students are fully shown the diversity of the engineering discipline.

Our dedication to the development of our members, community, and the student body as a whole will led to the development of professional and technical workshops and a high school outreach program. The main goals of all these programs are to promote the field of engineering and to encourage the development of future professionals. As well as these programs, we also plan on holding joint meetings with other engineering clubs, such as the engineering honors society Tau Beta Pi (TBP) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Moreover, we are also planning to have joint programs with Manhattan College and Columbia University, as well as other neighboring colleges in spring 2012.

For the 2011 academic year, an objective of the NSPE CCNY chapter is to promote unity among all classmen via implementing the programs stated below. We sincerely hope that through these programs, we can encourage the development of friendships and networks that will last a lifetime. We hope to be the link between upper and lower classmen and break communication barriers among the engineering disciplines by executing various activities that are acknowledged below.

Masha'Allah! That's great brother!

Yes alhamdolillah its a fantastic opportunity not only for me but also for other Muslim students as well. I am being invited to professional seminars, dinners and other professional events. I am being sponsored for these activities, meaning I don't have to pay even a penny (These events are very costly). I am being invited to the stage to speak in front of audience that is mostly Professional Engineers. In most cases, I was informed like 5 minutes before I had to deliver a speech. So whatever I had to say had to come from the bottom of my heart.

But besides all this there are some negative issues that I have to deal with. The most important issue is *shaking of hands with opposite gender*sigh...

May Allah protect all of us

Salam,

Congrats brother, job well done! May Allah ease your path and make you successful! ameen...

Stay strong and if you can tell before hand that you're unable to shake hands (before you're introduced) do so....I remember my former MSA group members taught our advisor about hand shaking between the genders, and every time we won an award--he'd only call on brothers and if brothers were not available, he'd call on the MSA sisters, give us the award without any hand shake.

So, I think if you tell them before hand....it gets better (if you're caught off guard, umm thats another case) I have no answer for that!

Assalam 'Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

MashaAllah I am proud of you my brother. May Allah keep you safe and bless you. As for the poll, I personally do not have a will power to present a detailised post(s) about mine. I am in no way saying its good or bad, but I myself just do not like it when its done by me. :)

But besides all this there are some negative issues that I have to deal with. The most important issue is *shaking of hands with opposite gender*sigh...

This is a matter I had to deal with, several times when I was in my first two jobs. However, I would like to tell you that you can refrain from doing it, without making them dissapointed inshaAllah.

What I did (and what I still do) is that when a woman offer hand, I simply say "wa'alaikumussalam" with a huge smile on face and keep my hand in the same position without any move. Being a human, they know what I mean from it, and some even later asked if thats not allowed in Islam to shake hands with the opposite gender, except ONE person. She was a Manager of my previous job, and she tried her best at me even after I did that. Again I just smiled more wide and ALL the people at the hall was looking at me as I am a "just now made Pizza" there. Everybody shook hands and all of them are Muslims too. May Allah guide them and me. Later, the matter was even brought to the Managers' meetings and they were plotting against me, as I was handling a risky job there (which included direct handling of Insurance Claims of the Company). However, Alhamdhulillah Allah has protected me.

Try your best my dear brother. Preventing from shaking hands with opposite gender is a way of doing Da'wah too, as everybody will know it inshaAllah. :)

Wassalam 'Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh
