Assalamu alaikum,
Why is it that we *have* to say prayers in arabic? If you can post from the Quran, that would make me feel more secure in the answer. Thanks :) :hijabi:

Allah swt instruct and teach prayer in Arabic.
The Law is set in need of Arabic in prayers is compulsory.

There is a friend asked The Prophet Muhammad s.a.w how to pray,The holy prophet replied solat as you see me praying
(so must be in Arabic)

Surah Al-Isra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3qJcfcvOi0&feature=related

(The night journey and the ascension of prophet Muhammad s.a.w)~ Al-Isra' and al-Mi'raj .

Praise be to Allah swt,
Thereafter, Allah swt sent the prophets as a mercy to the us and supported with miracles to indicate the truthfulness of their message.
Al-Isra' and al-Mi'raj are among the many miracles of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w

The miracle of al-Isra' is confirmed in the Qur'an. In Surat al-Isra', Ayah 1, Allah said:
Meaning:
which means: [Praise be to Allah swt Who enabled Allah swt slave, Muhammad(s.a.w), to make the journey at night from Masjid al-Haram in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, which is surrounded a blessed land.]

Prophet Muhammad s.a.w journeyed in body and soul the night of al-Isra' from Masjid al-Haram in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem.

Shari'ah set prayer is so that the prophet Muhammad s.a.w taught and like as was personally invited and taught by Allah swt

- so should be followed faithfully.

Where as making du'a will be done at any time in any course in any language.
An act of praise and remembrance of Allah swt act of the mouth and the heart can be read in any language. But of course is better in Arabic language, but is not strict compare to performing prayer which is a must and compulsory in Arabic.

Allah swt understands and know anything we are talking about in the hearts of even the very smallest.
and is impossible not to understand our language.
However, the conditions set out -
The Law is set in need of Arabic in prayers is compulsory.

Just for solat(prayer only)
If one can't speak Arabic make a point in memorising them.
Take understanding in(any language) what you read
than say them in Arabic.(Learn from the book)
Easy and in no time your saying will be fluent.
Masha'allah!

~May Allah swt help and guide you~Amin!
Take Care!
~Wassalam.

If you say the words in another language, you are not reading Al-Fatihah. Those are just translations of the surah. And we want to pray like the Prophet :saw: did, so when in rukoo we say 'subhaana rabiiyal-atheem' and the translation is not the exact words.

By prayer if u mean the five daily prayers then yes they MUST be said in arabic.

The reason is for unification purposes.

Suppose u went to a foreign country (hong kong for example), now when they are praying, you wouldnt have a clue as to what was ging on.
But if everyone says it in arabic, then all one needs to do is learn arabic, and he/she can go ANYWHERE in the world and unite in prayers with his/her brothers and sisters.

Furthermore, if the prayers should be in a non-arabic language, then this necessitates that the adhaan (call to prayer) also be in non-arabic language.

now, again, if u went to germany and the call for prayer was being given, you wouldnt have a clue whether that was the call to prayer or some dude shouting out abusive language or the police giving a sermon to catch robber etc.

Arabic unites all.

One God, one qibla (direction to prayer), one quraan, one language. UNITED in every aspect of life. Allaahu Akbar!

:salam2: sister lotus,

Prophet Muhammad SallAllahu Alleyhi Wa Sallam is reported to have said in an authentically recorded narration " Pray as you have seen me praying " (Sahih Bukhari Book 1 Vol 1, Hadith 604). Sahih Bukhari is the most authentic book with regards to recorded prophetic narrations and all muslim scholars are agreement with regards to this.

As you would know, Prophet Muhammad SallAllahu Alleyhi Wa Sallam taught us how to pray in Arabic, so we should also pray in Arabic as this is binding upon us after we bring about faith in Islam. The statement of faith (Shahadah) states 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) is the slave and messenger of Allah'

The second part of the Shahadah is the covenant that we are going to follow the way of our Prophet Muhammad SallAllahu Alleyhi Wa Sallam and obey what he has commanded us to and refrain from matters that he has informed us about prohibition.

One famous scholar named Imam Suyuti - May Allah have mercy upon him - said " “Wahy (Revelation from Almighty Allah) is actually of two types; Wahy that we have been commanded to write down and that we have been commanded to worship by its recitation, and each letter is rewarded with 10 good deeds. (This refers to the Quran) And the other type of Wahy we have not been commanded to preserve in writing, or worship through its recitation, it is indeed the Sunnah (Traditions/The way) of the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.”

And the evidence for following the teachings of Prophet SallAllahu Alleyhi Wa Sallam from the Quran is in portion of the chapter 59 verse 7

And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.

Therefore it is obligatory on all muslims to follow the Quran and the Sunnah as they are both revelation from Allah Almighty. So while looking for evidence (daleel) for a certain act, it should be sought from both the Quran and the Sunnah.

And the scholars of Islam say that the authentic narrations (established Sunnah) are from the book of Allah and it is in the book of Allah (due to the above mentioned verse).

I hope the matter is clear.

Sister its due to the reason that Arabic is the official language of Muslims all around the world.

Firstly suppose u land into a country where you don't understand the language even then while offering salah u'll not face any problem cause it will be in Arabic and in the same way(already mentioned by brother).

Secondly Text and translation cant be same especially in case of rich language like Arabic its difficult to exactly translate the same.Translation is the human work and cant be compared with the word of God.

A small sample of a miracle in the Qur'an that gets lost with translation

Thirdly even if we take the translation the question arises which one to refer there are so many some will say take this take that.
(This will create a new topic to debate for )

Assalaum alaikum sister,

We all know that we need to recite Quran in our prayers, not any words of our choice. It is evident from the verses below that our Creator wants us to understand His book in the language that He has chosen for His message.

Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book.
Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand.
Quran, 12:1-2

There is a message within those words, that we as Muslims are required to learn the language that God has chosen for His last message. Allah is the wisest and does not want us to get lost in translation like the people of the book (Jews and Christians). Also, different parts of Quran should be recited in each Rak'ah (round/circle?) and if we do not stick to the Arabic then we would be reading the translation in English for example. This will produce many obstacles, and I will give here two.

First, not everyone would agree on the translation of every verse which will prevent them from praying together (in congregation) as different individuals will disagree with each others translation.

The second obstacle would be that it would be extremely hard to memorise the translation of the entire Quran in any other language while memorising Quran in its orignial language is a miracle in itself and made easy by Allah to memorise, a fact that is stated in several verses of Quran.

Allah almighty mentions the relationship of Quran and Arabic language many times so that it is emphasised that Quran be learned in its original form. Some more versses are as follows:

And thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an and have diversified therein the warnings that perhaps they will avoid [sin] or it would cause them remembrance. Quran, 20:113

[It is] an Arabic Qur'an, without any deviance that they might become righteous. Quran, 39:28

A Book whose verses have been detailed, an Arabic Qur'an for a people who know, Quran, 41:3

And if We had made it a non-Arabic Qur'an, they would have said, "Why are its verses not explained in detail [in our language]? Is it a foreign [recitation] and an Arab [messenger]?" Say, "It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure." And those who do not believe - in their ears is deafness, and it is upon them blindness. Those are being called from a distant place. Quran, 41:44

And thus We have revealed to you an Arabic Qur'an that you may warn the Mother of Cities [Makkah] and those around it and warn of the Day of Assembly, about which there is no doubt. A party will be in Paradise and a party in the Blaze. Quran, 42:7

Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand. Quran, 43:3

The teachings of Islam in general are such that in practice, it leads to the unification of people by faith and eleminates other differences whether language, colour etc so that it is made clear that the only identity that is important to Allah is a Muslim's faith and it is the faith that should be more pronounced in a Muslim individual first and most. I understand it will be hard for you in the beginning, but Allah willing, it will become very easy for you if you try.

the formalities of the salah are done in arabic as a unifying institution, just like the Latin mass was to catholicism was 40-50 years ago. however the person's individual du'a is said in one's own language.

:salam2: sister Lotus, and congradulations for accepting Islam (May Allah (SWT) increase all of us in Guidance and Protect us from Deviating from the Straight Path).

The reason why our 5x Salat must be said in Arabic is because:

1.) The beauty of any language cannot be experianced unless one is speaking/can understand that language fluenty. In other words, if you were to translate a lecture/poem from Persian or Urdu into English, the feeling and emotion in those words will not be felt in the heart.

2.) It is the way that Rasulallah (Muhammad) (SAW), his Companions, and their (rightly guided) successors prayed, and if we decide to recite our 5x Salat in English instead of Arabic, then it would be a clear deviation from the True Way of our Messenger (Muhammad SAW), and if we Deviate from His Way, then we will be leading ourselves into the Fire of Jahanam.

Muhamamd (SAW) stated (Abu Dawud, Sahih Isnad): "The Jews and Christians have 72 differant groups/parties amongst them, and all of them will enter the Fire (Hell). Amonst my Ummah, there will appear 73 (DIFFERANT) group/parties, and ALL OF THEM will enter the Fire EXCEPT for 1 of them, and that is the Group which follows My Way (and the way of my companions)."

(For the mods, this is an ENGLISH TRANSLATION of the Hadith, and so THAT IS WHY I explained it so much so that (Inshallah Ta Ala), the correct understanding will be derived from that Sahih Hadith from Abu Dawud, and Sh. Albani graded it as being Sahih).

3.) The differant Nations had to pray the EXACT ways that their Prophets prayed (the Prophets who were given the authority over them), like for example:

The Children of Israel HAD TO pray their 3-5x Salat the way Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aron) (AS) prayed, and they HAD to recite their prayers in whichever language that Moses and Harun recited their prayers in (which was probably Hebrew, or maybe Aramaic).
