A interesting question came into my mind. I wondered since the world is round than there would be 2 ways towards Mecca Ex: If Mecca was directly east wouldnt praying directly west be the same thing? (sorry not trying to confuse anyyone).

Hey you're right, never thought of that.

But I'm sure it doesn't matter. You must take the direction of the shortest distance?

I came up with 2 reasons..

1. Allah wants us to face the Kabbah in the closest way, just like someone mentioned above.

2. Allah gave us a specific direction so it doesn't cause trouble and arguments when prayer time comes. If we were allowed to pray in any direction randomly salah wouldn't be as we know it today. One group of people will want to pray facing that direction whilst another group want to face the opposite direction; this will cause problems. I mean, you get the point, right?

^ Actually, the reason we pray facing the Kaaba is because the Kaaba is the center of the Earth. And when we do the various salaat movements facing the center of the Earth, it helps to remove the negative energies in our bodies into the ground, away from us. That's the scientific reason anyway.

Scientific answers aren't always the correct answers, but I agree with the answer, it seems reasonable.

Jazakum Allaah khair for your replies so from what I heard the best way is to take the shortest distance, right?
Peace

yeah but you have to think about the matter like this. Start from Kaaba. and move in every direction like a circle from the kaaba. Kaaba is the central point. You do not need to take any individual point as the centre. If you take the kaaba as the centre then the shortest path way, along this direction you have to face.

If what you say is implemented the people at the same place would be actually facing opposite to each other. So there has to be one single way to face the kaaba and in my opinion that is using the kaaba as the centre

My uninformed logic would be that there is symbolic reasons for facing East such as (and these are not based on any authority) being obedient to what Allah has taught through Quran, The Prophet, Muhammad (sall Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallem), and Iman. Also, even though the world is round and you are right that traveling either East or West can get us to the same place eventually, as a pilot (small planes, single engine, non-commercial) I found that it is best to follow the route that has been mapped out in advance. I once flew into a very large airport and was being passed from controller to controller when suddenly the last controller said "niner niner four niner seven, do you see that 727 off your left side, turn immediately either direction and drop altitude..." My friend, who was a much more experienced pilot than I ,put the plane in a right turning dive and got us out of the way of disaster. I suppose that is why it is better to only follow Allah's instruction and those whom we know that we can trust. In America, we have an expression "Too many cooks spoil the stew."

yes, for example north east of the USA. Like NY, PA, OH, MI and other places. The shortest path to kaaba is praying in the direction of North East. If you were not to use the shortest path and not considering the earth to be round than the direct route for this scenario, Kaaba would be east with a little south to it.

ne is the shortest path for this area.

as for some people praying east or west or north or south. They do this even at the kaaba.

The scholars addressed this question a long time ago, as there was a fatwa needed.

^ perfect.

And also, do not forget that even in the case you are not aware of the shortest distance, you investigate and do your best and know that whichever way you face to pray to Allaah He will accept.

Allaah never wanted to overburden his slaves. The impossible is not required of us :)
