Introducing Myself

Hello all,
I just wanted to say thank you for the oppertunity to learn, and prosper. I can give you a little background of myself. I feel the need to becuase I have found myself with questions...

I am reading the Holy Qur'an for the first time, (grew up in a catholic shool system which didn't look at any other religions, and when they taught world religions I would have thought I would have been introduced to it.. Unfortunatly I had to do my research on my own.

enough is enough.. I will continue reading, and learning, but there is one line I have a question about and if someone could clarify it for me I would be verry greatfull.. it goes

"2.173": He has only forbidden you what dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that over which any other (name) than (that of) Allah has been invoked; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit, no sin shall be upon him; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Now the first line "He has only forbidden you what dies of itself" can someone clarify what it is referring to? Sorry for being a nusence ...

this could be the religion inwich I find the responses I have been looking for threwout my life.. their has to be a reason and the book is almost shouting out to me to read and learn

I think you will find this passage of the Quran refers to the consumption of unlawful meat that which Allah has forbidden. We as Muslims can only consume meat that has been slaughtered in the name of Allah. No doubt my brothers and sisters in Islam will be able to elaborate more on this for you.

I will continue to read.. it helps me think, yet it sooths me to the point where I have almost an inner calm. that is the only way I can describe it. To be honest there is a lot that I never realized about accepting Islam, and the only dissapointment I have is the fact I never had the chance to read it in school. (at a younger age)

as Allaah says (which means): {Forbidden to you (for food) are: Al-Maytatah (the dead animals - cattle-beast not slaughtered), blood, the flesh of swine, and the meat of that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allaah…}[Quran 5:3].

This means If the person who slaughters dedicates his sacrifice to other than Allaah when slaughtering, i.e. slaughtering while mentioning another name than Allaah, then it is not permissible to eat from it Allaah also says (which means): {And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allaah has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is a grave disobedience.}[Quran 6:121]

so If the person who slaughters the animal is not a Muslim or a person from the people of the Book, then eating the meat of the animal is forbidden because in this case it is considered a dead animal. Allaah Says (what means): {This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them.} [Quran 5:5]. The food here refers to the slaughtered meat. Similarly, if the animal is killed by a gun, or by electricity, or by drowning, or by any other un-Islamic method, then it is not permissible to eat it.

As for your questions my brothers had already explained it to you as it simply means that we are not allowed to eat the flesh of an already dead animal.
